Yuri Bogomolov, founder of the franchise catalog and an expert in the field of business packaging, shared his recommendations on what skills should be developed by those who strive for success in business.

According to various studies, up to 80% of startups cease their activities within the first two years. The factors that contribute to this can be quite varied: some don't take seasonal fluctuations into account, others start without sufficient financial reserves, and still others choose the wrong business model or partner. However, preventing failure is entirely possible if you approach your business not only with an idea but also with an understanding of the knowledge and skills required to be a true entrepreneur, not just a name.

I have over 12 years of experience in business. Currently, I support aspiring entrepreneurs and observe the mistakes they most often make. This allows me to understand why some of them successfully grow their companies, while others find themselves in debt after just a few months.

In this material for the editorial board of "Business" of the company Skillbox Media, I share the following information:

  • Should an entrepreneur delve into studying the theoretical foundations?
  • Is it possible to start your own business after completing the courses?
  • There are skills and knowledge that cannot be mastered without direct experience.

The Importance of Theoretical Training for an Entrepreneur

Becoming an entrepreneur is not just a process of registering a company, renting an office and starting, for example, baking cakes, teaching English or fulfilling orders from marketplaces.

Entrepreneurship is the ability to effectively cope with uncertainty, financial resources and people management. In my experience, I've met many acquaintances with outstanding skills in their professions, but not all of them have managed to become successful entrepreneurs.

Alena, who has twelve years of teaching experience, spent a long time tutoring. However, she faced limitations: she had no time for new students, and raising her prices was no longer feasible. As a result, she decided to open a language school. However, at the initial stage, she failed to account for all expenses, misjudged the rent, and misunderstood the sales process. As a result, her business was 400,000 rubles in the red in the first quarter, causing her debt and stress, which in turn led to the closure of the school. All this happened because Alena continued to teach instead of becoming an entrepreneur.

You can endlessly strive to do your job at a high level, but not everyone can successfully create and run a business. To increase the likelihood of success, it is important to thoroughly study aspects related to finance, marketing, and legal matters before starting a project. Mistakes made in these areas may not be immediately apparent, but they often prove critical.

At the initial stage, you do not need to hold the positions of an accountant or CFO, but it is important to have an understanding of basic financial principles. Concepts such as revenue, margin, profit, cash flow gap, break-even point, and tax principles should be familiar to you.

In some cases, businesses cease operations within the first six months or a year due to the lack of a clear business plan that includes financial calculations. Newcomers to the business world often do not take into account even basic expenses, such as rent and utilities for several months in advance, believing that they will be able to start making a profit in the first month. However, such expectations are not always met.

Before starting your business, I recommend considering taking courses such as "CFO", a mini-MBA, or A full-fledged MBA. This will help you better understand the aspects of financial management in a company.

If your goal is to expand and develop your business, then learning the basics of marketing will be a must. It is important to understand the behavior of your target audience, understand the structure of the marketing funnel, know the costs associated with customer acquisition, and be able to test hypotheses. All these aspects play a key role in the formation of effective marketing strategies.

Entrusting all marketing tasks to a specialist is certainly possible and even desirable, but this should be done gradually. At first, it is wiser to understand marketing issues yourself. This approach will allow you to understand the ideas and proposals put forward by the marketer, and evaluate their feasibility.

If you have not yet mastered the basics, management of the development strategy is in the hands of your employees, who may work with you today and move to competitors tomorrow.

In my opinion, legal issues are one of the most complex areas that still need to be understood. How to start: register a sole proprietorship or create a limited liability company? How should I properly draft contracts with clients, contractors, landlords, or franchisors to avoid litigation in the future? What nuances should I consider to minimize risks? It would be great if you could find the answers to these questions yourself, or at least know where and how to quickly obtain the necessary information.

The basic rule for every entrepreneur is to carefully review contracts. If you have any doubts, don't hesitate to consult a lawyer. Although such a consultation may cost 2-3 thousand rubles, it could easily save you tens or even hundreds of thousands in the future.

Mastering the theory does have its advantages. While it won't make you an entrepreneur instantly, at least you'll avoid a situation where you act without understanding. However, don't dive into learning everything indiscriminately—it's better to focus on those aspects that will be directly useful in management, and you can acquire additional knowledge as needed.

Once you have a knowledge base, launching your next business—your second or third—becomes significantly easier. For this reason, many experienced businessmen become serial entrepreneurs: with each new project they find it a little easier than at the beginning of their journey.

Yuri Bogomolov, founder of the franchise directory and a consultant on business packaging, shared his recommendations on what skills and knowledge should be developed by those seeking to start a career in entrepreneurship.

If you haven’t yet mastered the basics, then your development strategy will be managed by hired employees who may work for you today and move to your competitors tomorrow.

The Opportunity to Become an Entrepreneur: Training or a Franchise?

Since I am actively involved in franchising, I am often asked whether it is easier to purchase a franchise and not worry about the financial, marketing and legal aspects - after all, all of this has already been carefully worked out by the franchisor. Furthermore, many people wonder whether it's possible to gain knowledge about entrepreneurship, for example, through courses or business accelerators. Let's examine these questions in more detail.

To some extent, this is true. Courses, accelerators, and franchises significantly facilitate the market entry process. With their help, you can organize your knowledge, gain new experience, establish useful contacts, and test ideas in a protected environment. This is an excellent way for newcomers who have never dealt with business management to take their first steps.

According to research, approximately 50% of new franchisees have no business experience. However, with clear step-by-step guidelines, as well as support and mentoring from the franchisor, they are able to achieve operating profit within the first year.

However, even with such support, the situation isn't always straightforward. Courses and franchises can be useful tools, but don't expect them to guarantee absolute success. While it's entirely possible to master basic skills, entrepreneurship is more about a specific mindset than a simple set of knowledge. Without the desire to take action, experiment, fail, and start over, no training program will produce results.

Lessons You Can't Learn Without Hands-On Experience

I believe that key skills you can't acquire without hands-on experience in real business include sales skills, the ability to quickly adapt, and the ability to work under pressure.

Sales skills. Until you've made your first money, your business remains just a concept, not a full-fledged one. For example, you may be well versed in the theory of building a sales funnel, but never take the step of calling your first client. Many aspiring entrepreneurs are afraid of sales: they're ready to improve their product endlessly, but only get around to actively promoting it as a last resort.

However, until you start the sales process, you won't be able to understand how your audience reacts, which methods bring success, and which, on the contrary, prove ineffective. This knowledge cannot be acquired in training courses; it can only be acquired through practical work.

Adaptability. No matter how carefully you prepare your business, mistakes and unforeseen circumstances are inevitable. The key here is not the difficulties themselves, but your response to them.

For example, what will you do if your supplier fails to fulfill their obligations and delivers a defective product? Will you suspend sales or urgently seek a replacement? Many will choose the first option, but for a successful business, the second is preferable. And this skill only comes with practice.

Ability to function in conditions of uncertainty. Let me explain with an example. Franchising is often perceived as more protected from crisis situations - they say that franchisors have already experienced various difficulties and can advise franchisees on how to avoid them. There's a certain logic to this statement, as franchising is based on a proven and stable business model.

As we know, significant changes have occurred in the business environment since 2022, which has also affected franchising. Western companies left the Russian market, and many franchisees found themselves facing near-destruction. Some were forced to close their businesses, others found an opportunity to change their brand and continue operating, and still others decided to adapt and, instead of European and American brands, began working with Chinese manufacturers.

This confirms that entrepreneurship is about adapting to a situation where the future remains uncertain. Such skills cannot be learned from textbooks; they are formed exclusively through practical activity. However, knowledge of how to effectively manage in a crisis can also be very useful.

Is it possible to become an entrepreneur? Yes, it is possible. However, you shouldn't rely on a flashy certificate from a business course. Training is only the first step. Mistakes, worries, uncertainty, and stress await you. You will have to soberly analyze your actions, adapt, and change. Those who cope with these challenges will be able to create a successful business.

  • In 2025, it is planned to continue implementing programs aimed at supporting small businesses at various levels: federal, regional, and industry. Initiatives aimed at developing startups and stimulating innovative projects will be implemented at the federal level.

Regional authorities will also develop their own programs that take into account local characteristics and business needs. This may include tax incentives, subsidies, and assistance in obtaining loans.

Industry-specific support measures will focus on the specifics of various economic sectors, including agriculture, IT, services, and manufacturing. • Franchises are a business model in which one party, called the franchisor, grants another party, the franchisee, the right to use its trademarks, business methods, and support in exchange for certain payments or royalties. This partnership allows franchisees to take advantage of an already established brand and established processes, which significantly reduces the risks of starting their own business.

There are several types of franchises. Firstly, there are product franchises, which focus on selling specific goods under a well-known brand. Secondly, there are service franchises, which provide services using proven technologies and operating methods. The third category is business-focused franchises, which help franchisees build their own company from scratch, leveraging the franchisor's experience and knowledge.

Thus, franchises can vary in nature and structure, but their common goal is a successful partnership that benefits both parties.

Becoming self-employed is quite simple: you just need to register with the tax authorities, choosing a special tax regime for the self-employed. This will allow you to legally conduct your business and pay taxes under a simplified scheme. It's also important to keep in mind that self-employed individuals cannot exceed certain income limits to maintain their status and avoid being subject to more complex tax regimes.

Is it possible to become an entrepreneur without relevant experience? Yes, it's possible. However, having an attractive business course certificate is no guarantee of success. Training is only the first step. Mistakes, worries, doubts, and stress await you. You will have to objectively evaluate your actions, adapt, and change. Only those who overcome these challenges will be able to create a successful business.
