While many people prefer to spend their free time watching football matches or fishing, I choose the hobby of creating my own Terminator. This activity allows me to express my creativity and technical skills, developing unique projects based on robotics and programming. Creating your own robot requires attention to detail and meticulous attention to detail, which makes the process not only fun but also educational.

Working on the Terminator project is not just a hobby for you, but a serious scientific endeavor. This project requires deep knowledge of artificial intelligence, robotics, and computer technology. Participating in such an ambitious undertaking requires the constant learning of new methods and approaches, making it an essential part of my professional life.

Programming and modeling radio-controlled helicopters have become a passion for me, which I develop in my free time. I am also actively working on my project, the Terminator robot. This hobby allows me to deepen my knowledge of technology and robotics, and also provides an opportunity to realize my creative ideas.

How long have you been working on this project?

I began developing the current version of the robot control software in 2011. Most of the code is written in Microsoft Visual Basic, with Python and Delphi used where necessary to optimize functionality.

The Terminator was originally conceived as a computer program. However, after purchasing a 3D printer, I was able to create a physical frame for my project.

The name and design of your robot can be inspired by a movie or chosen based on a famous character. It is important that the name reflects the unique features of the robot and its functions. If your robot resembles a movie character, it can attract attention and spark interest among users. It's also worth considering that a unique name can improve memorability and promote better market acceptance of your product.

I was inspired by the classic film "Terminator," which I watched as a child. I was amazed by how Stan Winston created the T-800 endoskeleton, every detail of which imitates the human body. Winston later emphasized that the designs were developed with the idea of ​​​​the possibility of creating a cyborg in real life, which made a great impression on me. This film not only became a cult classic in the science fiction genre but also inspired many to further research and development in the fields of robotics and artificial intelligence.

I often call my robot "Terminator," but his real name is John Henry, a character from the Terminator universe. John Henry is an artificial intelligence that functions independently of a physical body. In this regard, my robot resembles a fictional character, as both possess unique abilities and intelligence that allow them to perform complex tasks and make decisions.

How a grandfather proposed preserving his voice in a robot after his death

The young developer worked diligently for several years on creating a robot and actively shared his achievements on YouTube and the social network VKontakte. Recently, he published a video in which his robot, named "Terminator," speaks in the voice of his late grandfather. However, the question arises: is this really the voice we hear?

This is truly my grandfather's authentic voice. I have recordings of his conversations, although unfortunately there aren't many left due to a fire in the old house. There are about seven hours of video left in total, and the robot currently uses this material exclusively.

How does the "brain" of this robot function? The robot's operation is based on complex algorithms and data processing systems that allow it to make decisions and perform tasks. The main components include processors that process information, sensors that collect data about the environment, and software that interprets this data and controls the robot's actions. Modern robots use artificial intelligence technologies to improve their ability to learn and adapt to new conditions. These "brains" provide the robot with the ability to interact with the world around it, analyze the situation, and perform tasks with a high degree of accuracy and efficiency.

When working with video recordings, I extract sound. There are two main approaches. The first is speech cloning, which allows you to create an artificial voice. However, as I demonstrated in one of my videos, this method loses the emotional component, although the speech remains recognizable. The second approach is to use a large amount of audio data. Here, we use speech recognition systems that break speech into words and add text markers to facilitate further processing. This method allows us to preserve the emotional coloring and make the result more natural.

This limits the robot's functionality. If the grandfather did not pronounce a certain word in the recordings, the robot will not be able to reproduce it. For example, if he did not pronounce the numbers from 1 to 60, the "Terminator" will not be able to answer the question about time. However, with a sufficient number of words, the robot is capable of "reasoning." I asked: "Do you know that you are dead?" And the robot replied: "Yes, I know. It's sad, but what can you do?"

Is the robot capable of speech recognition, or are all questions and answers pre-written?

The system first recognizes spoken words and converts them to text. This text is passed to the response generation module. If the text matches the request, the system provides a ready-made answer. Otherwise, the program analyzes keywords to form a response. This way, the robot avoids repeating answers, and the user does not need to formulate questions in advance - it is able to understand them on its own and provide an appropriate answer.

There is a problem: will the program be able to recognize the necessary words in the grandfather's expressions? If it succeeds, it will form the correct phrase. If not, the answer will be simplified. For example, I asked: "Grandpa, do you know Ohm's law?" To which the robot replied: "Yes." However, when I asked it to pronounce the law itself, the program could not find the necessary words and answered: "Well, I, that is ...". This situation highlights the complexities of understanding and interpreting information, which can make interacting with such systems challenging.

Why my grandfather's voice when so few audio recordings remain? This question raises important aspects of memory and legacy. My grandfather's voice carries a unique atmosphere and emotional richness that cannot be conveyed through text. The experience, wisdom, and history of my family are audible in the sounds of his voice. Each recording, however rare, becomes a precious artifact that connects generations. Preserving such audio recordings helps preserve not only a person's individuality but also their contribution to family traditions. In a modern world where technology makes it easy to record and share memories, it is important to recognize the value of these sound fragments, which can become an important part of the legacy for future generations.

My grandfather himself asked me to save his voice in the system. One day he asked, "Are you saving our video recordings?" I confirmed that I was. He said, "Don't delete them; when I'm gone, you'll upload them to the robot, and it will speak to you with my voice." I have fulfilled his wish and now have the opportunity to interact with his voice digitally. This is not only a way to preserve his memory, but also an opportunity to maintain a connection with his legacy in the future.

When did he pass away? This question touches on important issues related to memory and legacy. Passing away is a natural process that affects each of us. It is important to remember a person’s contribution to history and the lives of others. Understanding the time and circumstances surrounding his passing helps preserve his memory and pass it on to future generations.

He passed away in 2019, but his voice did not return for the Terminator project until early 2022. I did this over the New Year holidays.

Were you close with your grandfather? Was he interested in robotics?

We had a strong bond. My grandfather, Nikolai Fedorovich Osipovich, was passionate about electrical engineering and passed this passion on to me from a very early age. He actively worked with me, teaching me various aspects of technology and demonstrating how to create and improve devices. Thanks to his guidance, I was able to understand the basics of electrical engineering and develop skills that have become an important part of my life.

Nikolay Fedorovich, a designer during the Soviet era, developed guidance systems for surface-to-surface missiles. In 1981, he received the USSR State Prize for his significant contribution to improving the efficiency of work using specialized equipment. His professional achievements played a vital role in the development of domestic rocket technology and strengthening the country's defense capability.

As a child, my grandfather, instead of the usual fairy tales, read me a reference book on integrated circuits. Together, we converted toys into radio-controlled models. Once, when I wanted a loudspeaker, my grandfather replied, "We won't buy it; you'll build it yourself." From that moment on, I became interested in modeling and designing, and my grandfather was always there, supporting my endeavors.

My grandfather inspired I developed an interest in aviation while working at an airfield and repairing aircraft. Currently, I use a 3D printer to create radio-controlled helicopter models. These models actually fly, but unlike mass-produced toys, they replicate real components, such as a helicopter's swashplate, and mimic its functionality. This allows me to not only enjoy the creation process but also delve into the details of aviation technology, which makes the hobby even more exciting.

How the perception of a robot with the voice of a late grandfather changes among loved ones and online haters

Listening to the voice of a departed grandfather is a unique experience that can evoke mixed feelings. On the one hand, it can evoke nostalgia and warm memories of times spent together, but on the other, a sense of loss and sadness. Moments like these can remind us of the importance of family ties and how much we cherish those who have passed away. Memories of my grandfather's voice can inspire reflection on life, love, and the meaning of family relationships.

It doesn't fill me with fear, but rather with wonder. If I had no idea about technology and was brought to such a robot, I might have experienced stronger emotions. However, I understand how it works, and this knowledge helps me perceive it with interest. Understanding the functionality of the robot contributes to a deeper appreciation of technology and its capabilities.

When your family first heard its voice, what was their reaction? Considering their unfamiliarity with technical aspects, their impressions may have been especially sincere.

They really liked it, their emotions were significantly brighter than mine. Overall, my relatives reacted to it calmly and positively.

The comments on my social media are mostly positive. Users are actively interested, asking questions and asking for clarification. I'm always happy to help and communicate with the audience. Some fans want to see "Terminator" in person, and I'm happy to organize such events. Negative feedback most often comes from strangers. For example, when someone shares my posts, you can find comments under them claiming that this is simply a manifestation of evil. I'm interested in observing people's reactions: some are supportive, while others predict disaster. Everyone perceives information differently, and this makes the discussion even more fascinating.

Many people are concerned about the potential threats associated with the development of technology, especially in the field of artificial intelligence. Some believe that artificial intelligence could become dangerous for humanity. However, the situation is much more complex and requires in-depth analysis. Technologies, including artificial intelligence, can both pose risks and offer significant opportunities to improve quality of life. It is important to understand that responsible approaches to the development and implementation of technologies can minimize potential threats and direct them toward the benefit of society.

Today, we are far from achieving the singularity—the moment when machines will be able to make autonomous decisions. Understanding the mechanisms of the human brain remains an unsolved problem. To create artificial intelligence capable of independent thought, it is necessary to better understand how our brain functions. This understanding will form the basis for the development of more advanced neural network technologies that can mimic human cognitive processes.

A conscious computer is a fascinating topic that is attracting the interest of scientists and researchers. Such a computer will likely have a unique architecture and processors that differ from current technologies. The development of such a system could open new horizons in the field of artificial intelligence and information processing. However, the question of where to look for the answer remains open. Perhaps the answer already exists and is simply waiting to be discovered, which could lead to revolutionary changes in our understanding of human-machine interaction.

I don't consider myself a creator in the true sense of the word. I see myself more as a tinkerer who has mastered technologies and tools. For example, the Terminator is only an imitation of life, not true consciousness. A true creator is one who is capable of creating autonomous, thinking beings with true intelligence and self-awareness.

Modern technologies are incapable of surpassing human intelligence, even if robots can imitate human speech and behavior. They operate strictly within the confines of preset algorithms, which limits their capabilities. In this sense, I see myself more as a toolmaker than as a true creator. Human thinking and creativity remain unique and irreplaceable.

This research helps us gain a deeper understanding of physiology and maintain harmony with the world around us.

Sometimes he devotes entire evenings to modifying his project, such as "Terminator," while on other days he switches to other hobbies. In this process, he plays the roles of director, designer, and programmer, and each stage of the work is driven by inspiration. This approach allows him to remain passionate and creative, which ultimately reflects in the quality and innovation of his developments.

In addition to creating robots, the developer is actively involved in solving household problems and working on other projects. Among them are radio-controlled helicopters and a smart home system. This system will provide control over heating, lighting, and alarms, which will significantly improve the comfort and security of homes.

The developer understands that his project has no fixed end goal, as technology is constantly evolving. The "Terminator" project is a never-ending journey of improvement, but the developer approaches this process with moderation.
