However, it is the sound that creates atmosphere and brings three-dimensional space to life. Sound designers and composers use a variety of tools and technologies to create unique sounds that not only attract attention but also enhance the player's emotions. Well-thought-out sound design can significantly increase engagement and satisfaction with a game, making it memorable and unique.

The creators of the horror action game Condemned: Criminal Origins effectively used sound to create an atmosphere of anxiety and fear. Players felt the presence of enemies even when they were not nearby. If the player stopped and listened for footsteps behind the wall or heard a sharp cough, the sounds suddenly died down. Enemies, whether real or imagined, slowed down along with the hero. This created a tense silence that was more unsettling than any enemy encounter. This approach to sound design significantly enhanced the gaming experience and immersion in the atmosphere of horror.

Game designer Raphaël Colantonio, known for his contributions to Dishonored and Prey, always strives for a unique sound in each new project. When developing Weird West, he used several tracks from his rock band Weird Wolves, in which he performs with the daughter of Depeche Mode's guitarist. This added an unusual musical accompaniment to the immersive Western, making its sound even more original and memorable.

Composer of the quest "Remember..."

The genre of everyday life in music includes various styles of narrative. These styles can be melancholic and instrumental, reflect the era of action, or completely absent. The absence of an explicit narrative represents both a simple and complex solution to the problems of emotional expression. Based on my experience, I would like to share my observations and difficulties that I encountered while creating the soundtrack for the film "Remember...".

Creating music begins with choosing references. When I discussed sound references with the project director, I was offered the 2016 game Florence and the films "Courier" and "City Zero" by director Karen Shakhnazarov. All of these works, to varying degrees, belong to the "slice of life" genre. This genre focuses on everyday events, where the authors pay particular attention to details rather than the main plot. Video essayist Alexander Rybakov analyzes interesting aspects of the film "Courier" and its approach to depicting everyday life in detail on his channel.

The film "Courier" vividly captures the atmosphere of the Soviet era and the general mood of the time. However, from a musical point of view, it does not provide a clear emotional experience. Despite the presence of music, it does not create significant emotional load and is even absent in key scenes. However, "The Courier" left me with a feeling of emptiness, which I took into account when creating the soundtrack for the "Remember..." project.

In Florence, music plays a key role, creating atmosphere and conveying emotion. The classic, minimalist soundtrack, created by Kevin Penkin, perfectly complements the narrative. The sounds that accompany each scene help to deepen understanding of the protagonist's daily life, focusing on the small details that shape her world. The musical accompaniment makes the game more engaging and memorable, allowing the player to immerse themselves in the character's unique story and experiences.

The musical motifs in the game are simple and memorable. The soundtrack is recorded by a chamber ensemble, including violin, cello, which also performs a diegetic function, reflecting one of the characters, woodwind instruments, especially the clarinet, and piano. The musical design is based on the principle of academic minimalism, which originated in America, which consists of eliminating everything superfluous and emphasizing the key elements of the musical structure. I first encountered this game and its music the year of its release and was amazed by the skill of the composer. Florence's soundtrack lends "Remember..." a much-needed character in its lighter, more upbeat moments, highlighting the emotional depth of the experience.

In "Remember...," nostalgia and loss are central themes. These motifs are also present in "Florence," but they're underrepresented and underdeveloped. My reference point was "Goodbye, Lenin!", which explores the loss of loved ones and nostalgia for the Soviet era. Yann Tiersen's soundtrack beautifully captures the atmosphere of the changing era, emphasizing the protagonist's relationship with his mother and his memories of a country that will forever be associated with her. Furthermore, the soundtrack is minimalist and features classical instruments. This approach heightens the emotional impact and adds depth to the story.

After completing the search for references, the first sketches began. The soundtrack was based entirely on the piano. It was easier for me to create fragments using the piano, since later accents on specific instruments emphasized the characteristics of the performance. This approach allowed me to create a unique sound and atmosphere, which made the music more expressive and memorable.

Working on a soundtrack can be much more complex than you initially expect. To simplify the process, it is important to estimate the number of compositions needed in advance, think through stylistic techniques, and document all stages of the work. Musical creativity is often associated with emotions, so the lack of a clear plan can lead to confusion and difficulties in the process. Creating a soundtrack requires not only creativity but also an organized approach to achieving the desired result.

It's important to understand that creating music for games requires active play. Early in development, I created numerous musical sketches that were later rejected because they didn't fit the gameplay experience and were too distracting. Despite its casual atmosphere, Remember... lacks fine environmental details due to its low-poly graphics, making the music especially noticeable. Therefore, it was decided to use a simple, minimalist compositional structure to seamlessly integrate the sound into the gameplay and avoid distracting the player from key moments.

Musical minimalism is widely used in film because it doesn't distract the viewer and fits comfortably into the background sound. Examples of such compositions can be found in the works of Ludovico Einaudi and Jóhann Jóhannsson. In video games, this issue becomes even more significant due to the dynamics of gameplay. When a player is in a static position, repeating the same melody can quickly become tiring and boring. Therefore, it is important that the musical accompaniment in games is varied and adapts to changes in the gameplay, thereby creating a deeper and more engaging atmosphere.

Music in games plays a key role in conveying the mood and emotions of the character, thereby creating a deep connection between the player and the game world. This process is known as flow, when the user is completely immersed in the game and experiences vivid emotions from the events. The better the flow state is realized, the higher the player's motivation to continue playing. In a highly competitive video game market, developers are faced with the need to retain user attention, because successful interaction with the audience directly depends on high-quality sound design and musical accompaniment.

In creating the piece "Remember...", I sought to reflect several key leitmotifs that permeate the entire narrative. A leitmotif is a vibrant melody that can appear in different interpretations, sound in certain situations, or accompany a specific character. One of the central leitmotifs is the theme of illness and separation. The main goal of these motifs is to be short, expressive, and easily recognizable.

The main leitmotif of the work is the internal conflict of Misha, the central character. He is stuck in the past and does not strive for the future. Misha is immersed in childhood nostalgia, which is reflected in the atmospheric music of the city. The background melody sounds vague and unfinished, emphasizing his emotional state and the lack of musical resolution. This musical theme reinforces the feeling of stagnation and the hero's longing for bygone times.

The game "Remember..." focuses on the character Misha. The background music that accompanies his movements through the city largely conveys his emotions and perception of the world around him. While searching for a suitable musical composition, I began using certain fragments from the game as background music, which allowed me to improvise and relive various situations. In this way, I strove to create an atmosphere that corresponds to Misha's internal state.

Most of the background compositions, named after the ordinal numbers of the days of the story, are vague in nature. This creates an effect of "emptiness," which is based on the emptiness of thoughts and the musical structure. Wide, empty spaces in the game's locations emphasize the protagonist's uncertainty and lack of purpose in his life. In later days of the story, this element reflects the protagonist's confusion caused by the negative events unfolding around him.

At the end of "Remember...," the hero's motif appears again, but this time it is devoid of uncertainty. After all the events he experienced, a clear picture formed in Misha's mind, which allows him to make confident and informed decisions.

The motif of loss and illness is represented by four notes: H - E - D - Fis. This melody was the first to arise during development, and retained its original form in the scene of one of the characters' farewell to his relatives. At the beginning of the game, when illness is not yet mentioned, this motif appears in several episodes, hinting at future developments. This approach creates an atmosphere of foreboding and emphasizes the importance of emotional moments in the plot.

As the plot develops, the melody gradually becomes more noticeable, reaching its climax.

Motifs are capable of not only conveying individual moments or characters' personalities, but also emphasizing their relationships. In particular, the relationship between Misha and Asya is characterized by a waltz-like motif, which enhances the emotional atmosphere of their interaction. This musical element creates a sense of smoothness and rhythm in their relationship, reflecting both harmony and possible conflicts.

The music plays during the characters' walk on the first day, creating an atmosphere of their interaction, and continues to accompany them in various variations throughout the plot. When discord arises between the characters, the melody takes on more disturbing notes, reflecting the tension and emotional changes in the relationship. This dynamic musical accompaniment intensifies the perception of events and helps to deeper understand the inner experiences of the characters.

By the end of the play, when the characters realize that their illness is hindering the development of their relationships, the leitmotif becomes tragic. This realization underscores the depth of their emotional experiences and creates tension in the plot, making the story more memorable and meaningful for the audience.

Typically, a sound designer breaks their work down into several phases, allowing them to effectively manage both the overall development process and specific tasks. This approach helps achieve high-quality audio, a key element of a successful gaming experience. Each phase includes analysis, development, integration, and testing of sound effects, which contributes to the creation of a unique atmosphere and immersion of players in the game world.

While working on a large MMORPG at Black Caviar Games as a lead sound designer, I was responsible not only for sound design, scoring, and musical score creation but also for project management. An effectively organized workflow in the audio department contributes to the achievement of high-quality results.

A key aspect of a successful project is the team's alignment with the vision and goals. It's important that every team member can not only hear but also analyze the assigned tasks as you do. A clear understanding of deadlines and final audio format requirements plays a significant role in the production process. Effective management of the audio department is critical, as its work impacts many factors, including the quality of the final product. At this stage, it is important to achieve clarity and distinctness, ensuring that each element is heard and has its place in the mix.

Mastering, in turn, is the final processing of the finished track. This is the stage where the sound is optimized for various audio formats and platforms. Mastering ensures the necessary loudness, dynamic range, and overall sound so that the track sounds professional on any device.

High-quality mixing and mastering can significantly enhance a musical work, making it competitive in the market. All of the stages mentioned above often overlap. Furthermore, musical accompaniment is an important aspect. The processes associated with creating sound content usually occur in parallel and depend on the specific goals of the project. For example, in some cases, it is necessary to create an intro to introduce the finished material to potential players. In situations like these, we strive to sync our musical work with the overall development process, which helps improve the game's overall experience and increase audience engagement.

This approach allowed us to create an atmosphere in which players can truly immerse themselves in the game world.

The soundtrack to the game Will&Reason is my first large-scale project. Previously, I created music only for small modifications. Although work on the game is still ongoing, I have already gained valuable experience that I want to share. I hope you find this experience useful and inspiring.

Will&Reason is a turn-based 4X strategy game exploring alternative scenarios for human development. Players must lead their civilization from a primitive communal system to the late Middle Ages, choosing one of three available paths: magic, technocracy, or classical empire. The game offers unique biomes, each characterized by its own cultures and civilization visual style. Every decision affects the development and fate of your civilization, creating an engaging and varied gameplay experience.

This game requires the creation of extensive musical content covering a variety of styles and moods. In one game session, players can develop a steppe civilization, choosing the path of technocracy, while in another, they can transform desert dwellers into powerful mages. This diversity requires original musical pieces that match the unique themes and atmosphere of each gameplay situation.

Creating an authentic soundtrack is a top priority that requires special attention. The music must sound harmonious and natural, so that the player doesn't feel disjointed, as if compositions were assembled from different eras and styles, creating something like Frankenstein's monster. It is important that the soundtrack is perceived as a unified whole that supports the game's atmosphere and deepens immersion in its world. Each element of the musical accompaniment must be carefully considered and integrated to ensure continuity and an emotional connection with the game's story.

At the current stage of development, the game has no budget, which forces us to use only virtual musical instruments. The main rule I have identified is to create a cohesive sound: it is necessary to create a list of virtual instruments and use them exclusively. This will achieve harmony in the musical accompaniment and create a unique atmosphere for the game.

Two different libraries of the same instrument, such as a cello, can sound like completely different instruments. This is due to differences in the characteristics and acoustics of the recording room, as well as the specifics of the performance style and note production techniques. When recording a soundtrack using live instruments, producers typically avoid recording each composition with different orchestras, microphones, and in different rooms. This approach allows for a more consistent sound and preserves the integrity of the musical work.

When creating a soundtrack, adhering to arrangement rules can be challenging. Sometimes, achieving the desired sound requires an instrument with unique characteristics that differ from the one already chosen. In such cases, it's worth experimenting with the existing instrument first, taking full advantage of all the capabilities offered by modern digital audio workstations (DAWs). Only if this does not lead to the desired result, you should resort to using another tool.

In the final stages of development, when the player's cities float in the air thanks to magic or steam technology, a full orchestra will come into play, emphasizing the grandeur and scale of the era.

Knowledge of the musical history of various cultures plays a key role in creating unique musical works. For example, Arabic music is distinguished by its use of more than twelve tones, including microtones, which are 1.25 tones. It is also important to understand what Arabic music sounded like in the late Middle Ages, including the features of orchestration and compositional structure. This knowledge allows for a more profound immersion in the atmosphere and style of a musical work. To create a soundtrack for temperate biomes, I prefer to use the Dorian and Mixolydian modes, which are often found in Celtic music. This lends the compositions the necessary emotional nuances and creates a harmonious sound that reflects the characteristics of the chosen theme.

The development of the same motif across different eras is an important aspect of musical art. The human brain is prone to perceiving patterns, and this property can be effectively used in the context of musical motifs. To create monster sounds, I had to go out into the streets and record real sounds using a portable recorder. If you've come up with the idea of ​​applying a distortion effect to a flute, go for it! Perhaps this is exactly how the flutes sounded in the "Lower Boilers" location of your game. Recorded a bass guitar and rolled off the frequencies to 180 Hz? It created a truly unusual sound! Perhaps this is exactly how a guitar should sound on Mars. Experimentation in music opens new horizons and allows you to create unique soundscapes. Don't limit your creativity, and you will find completely new sounds and styles. Develop your thinking, use your imagination, and create unique pieces of music. Explore all the available music production tips, but don't be afraid to discard them if they interfere with your creative process. It's important to follow your intuition and find your own style that reflects your individuality. Creativity requires courage, so don't limit yourself to generally accepted recommendations. A case from my experience: I started working on the project when I had just mastered the basics of playing guitar and was just starting to use VST instruments for sound creation. I created my first or second track for one of the locations, and it unexpectedly turned out to be a success, outperforming a more complex version written by a musician who specialized in creating orchestral works with live instruments. Despite this, professionals might have considered my track lacking in quality, since the plugin, by default, cannot compete with a real instrument. This experience confirms that sometimes a creative approach and a good choice of sounds can play a significant role in creating music, even if your technical skills are still at a basic level.

The guy obviously didn't understand how I, an amateur, managed to get ahead of him. In fact, I didn't understand how it happened myself. However, I was chosen for the project. The sound of a pompous orchestra didn't fit the post-apocalyptic world, while the rough sound of a pseudo-guitar fit the atmosphere perfectly (hello, "Stalker").

It may take a significant amount of time before you find your unique approach to work. I'm not talking about musical styles in the traditional sense here. Forget about styles. In games, they don't matter. Emotions don't lend themselves to style. Atmosphere has no specific style. The player's experience of music also has no clear style. It's important to focus on deep engagement with the game and its emotional impact, rather than categorization.

It manifests itself in the fact that many slots for the processing effects chain remain unfilled. It is important to get feedback on a new track from your team, while the opinions of others do not matter.

The work style is determined by confidence in yourself, your intuition, and abilities. This is the state when you answer questions with a smile like "What plugins did you use on the track for "Martian Trench"? "It sounds like you've actually been there." Sometimes it's hard to explain that you just got back from there yesterday, isn't it? This approach to work not only helps you create unique and memorable content, but also builds trust in your skills and professionalism. Confidence and experience become the foundation of your creative style, allowing you to create music that inspires and amazes.

Break boundaries. Follow your own path. Don't be afraid to combine seemingly incompatible ideas. Strive for your goals and don't settle for anything.

Learning Japanese may be relevant if you plan to participate in projects that require vocals in Japanese. However, it's worth keeping in mind that many Japanese women are not attracted to foreigners (gaijin), especially if they don't speak the language. If you can't communicate in Japanese, your attempts to establish contact may go unanswered. Everyone has their own unique work cadence. I prefer not to spend more than three days on a track. After that, the sound I was initially aiming for begins to slip away. The creative magic is lost, and instead of creating the exact sound you envisioned, you have to either start from scratch or compromise (especially if the deadline is tight). The result may be that the client is satisfied, but the creator remains dissatisfied, realizing they were capable of more.

However, I prefer to avoid searching for "similar tracks" when working on my own works. This helps maintain originality and freshness. I can listen to a variety of background music from games, but I try not to borrow elements so as not to blur my creative vision.

Old games from childhood hold a special place in our memories. For me, such games are Unreal Tournament 1999, Heroes of Might and Magic 3, and Lineage 2. When recalling these moments, try loading your favorite map and perceive it not as a player, but as a composer analyzing the magnificent work of a colleague. This will allow you to more deeply appreciate the musical design and soundtrack, which create atmosphere and enhance the gaming experience. Such memories not only allow us to recall nostalgic moments but also to see how music and sound make game worlds more vibrant and memorable.

The question of work style in music creation is always controversial. Every composer has their own preferences and methods. For example, I prefer not to write a complete melody unless I have at least half of the parts written with accompanying instruments. This integrated approach allows for a more harmonious and balanced piece. However, this opinion is subjective, and for some musicians, such a practice can become an obstacle to the creative process. It is important to find your own style and working method that will foster inspiration and productivity.

For example, instead of setting mandatory hours for working on a track, it is better to focus on inspiration and well-being. If you're tired after a day at work and haven't had time to devote to music as much as you planned, don't sacrifice sleep to make up for lost time. It's important to find a balance between work and rest to ensure the creative process remains enjoyable and doesn't become a chore.

Long-term use of this method can lead to burnout, especially in the context of creating music for games. It's important to understand that players don't consider the composer's emotional state when creating a piece of music. Focusing on the gameplay, they don't analyze the details of the track's creation, making this approach ineffective. Music in games should serve to immerse you in the atmosphere, not raise questions about its origins.

People often escape into the virtual world for a short break from reality. It's a way to recapture vivid emotions or distract themselves from everyday problems. If your music only gives you headaches and fatigue, it's unlikely to evoke positive emotions in others. Music should inspire and energize, otherwise it won't attract the attention of listeners. When creating musical content, it is important to consider your feelings and emotions that you want to convey so that your work resonates with the audience.

The right sound not only enhances the perception of the game but also promotes deeper interaction with the plot and characters. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to sound quality to ensure the game sounds truly amazing.

I have over twenty years of experience in the development of multimedia content and playback systems. Since the beginning of 2021, I have been actively involved in game development. Previously, I managed various projects at one of the leading IT companies in Moscow. My experience allows me to effectively combine technical skills and a creative approach to creating game solutions.

В глубине сцены время от времени возникают приглушенные сполохи лимонно-желтого оттенка, переходящие в фиолетовый и постепенно исчезающие, сопровождаемые чьими-то стонами и вскриками. Неожиданно мы ощущаем на затылке давление массивного красного пятна. Оборачиваясь, замечаем, как оно разрастается, и пытаемся отдалиться. Вдруг, словно молния, мимо нас проносится яркий лимонно-желтый образ с белой сердцевиной и надрывным криком. Этот момент погружает нас в атмосферу напряжения и тревоги, заставляя задуматься о скрытых страхах и эмоциях.

Эффективность общения в данной форме невозможно переоценить. Даже не обладая продвинутыми навыками работы со звуковыми инструментами, я всегда успешно передавал своему коллеге свое видение акустической картины локации или сцены, что позволяло достигать желаемого результата. Такой подход способствует более глубокой и точной интерпретации звуковых характеристик, что в конечном итоге улучшает качество звучания.
