The image of the mother occupies a key place in the cultural heritage of all mankind, being at the same time simple and accessible to everyone. It is our mother who gives us life and ensures the continuity of existence on Earth.

In our country, Mother's Day is celebrated on the last Sunday in November. In honor of this occasion, we have prepared a collection of 16 musical pieces in which artists from around the world and across eras express a variety of emotions associated with mothers. The selection includes melancholic and nostalgic, as well as touching and joyful melodies. One of these songs can be used in a congratulatory message for mom, like a musical card. Music is a wonderful way to convey how important she is to you.

Elvis Presley - "That's All Right"

The song was written by Arthur Crudup, a master of blues guitar, singer, and creator of many famous melodies. However, Presley didn't simply adapt a familiar blues theme; he also added an unexpected and cheerful rhythm, which became a real discovery for this musical genre. This approach imbued the song with a dynamic and energetic quality that was particularly appealing to listeners in the 1950s.

The lyrics are remarkably simple and center on two key phrases:

"Don't worry, Mom, do it your way."

"Yes, everything's fine, everything's fine."

The lyrical character, addressing his mother, expresses his intention to leave the family nest and start an independent life.

The song "That's All Right" not only marked the first step of Elvis Presley's musical career, but also led to unexpected success, opening the door to his future status as the King of Rock and Roll.

Doris Day - Destiny Will Decide Everything Itself

The song called Que Sera, Sera, also known as Whatever Will Be, Will Be, is translated as "come what will be" or "what will be, will be." It was created by the songwriting duo Ray Evans and Jay Livingston in 1955. The first person to perform this composition was American actress and singer Doris Day, who won an Oscar for her vocal performances in films twice. Over the course of some time, the song "Whatever Will Be, Will Be" became something of a calling card for Doris.

The arrangement features a captivating combination of waltz rhythms with the sound of instruments reminiscent of the traditional Spanish bandurria. The simple melody with light and airy vocals is memorable and makes you want to sing it.

The central figure of the song is a woman who has already reached adulthood. She looks back with nostalgia to the time she used to ask her mother about what the future held for her:

When I was still a little girl,

I asked my mother,

What will I become —

Will I become attractive?

Will I be rich?

To this, her mother answered:

"Que sera, sera…"

"We are not able to predict what the future will bring us."

The second verse is the heroine's address to her beloved, and she receives the same words in response. In the third verse, she herself becomes a mother, and now she must pass on the same thought to her children: "What will be, will be."

Edita Piekha - "Mama"

This composition is very similar to its predecessor in its content, although it has a different atmosphere. It was released several years after Doris Day's creation and was already on the Soviet music scene.

In 1965, Edita Piekha appeared on the program "Blue Light", performing the composition "Mama". She began her performance with a tender and touching story about a letter she received from her mother. After that, the melody sounded on the air, gently swaying.

The lyrics of Piekha's song are characterized by a calming and affectionate mood.

"Mom, my dear, I understand, I understand,

Why are you so far away, and what are you waiting for?

Sometimes I forget to write.

"You will be able to understand and forgive."

The image of the mother in this work is, without a doubt, presented in an idealized light - the Soviet stage of that era did not allow the discussion of complex social issues.

Nevertheless, the image of the mother performed by Piekha is presented very deeply and truthfully. With tenderness and warmth, she touches on both the bitterness of separation from one's mother and the experiences that mothers experience as their children grow up.

B.B. King - The Only One Who Loves Me Is My Mother

B.B. King's greatest asset is not so much his lyrical skill as his incredible and emotional guitar playing. In "Nobody Loves Me But My Mother," he primarily conveys his feelings for his mother through an expressive guitar solo.

This composition is a classic blues, in which expressive, almost conversational guitar melodies sound, while the harmony remains light and unobtrusive. The lyrics of the song include several laconic lines:

"The only person who really loves me is my mother.

Sometimes she doesn’t miss an opportunity to make fun of me either.

Now it’s clear to you why I sometimes behave so comically.

When you act the way you do.

Unlike Piekha’s composition, the image of the mother in BB’s work does not have the same depth of psychological analysis. However, the words and music performed by an experienced artist will convey all the necessary emotions and moods.

Pink Floyd - Mother

Another significant group on the American music scene is the group Pink Floyd.

One of the most famous albums of the group, which is called The Wall, contains a composition called Mother. In this song, the main character addresses his mother with deep and serious questions about life.

"Mama, do you think they could really drop a bomb?"

Mama, do you think they'll like this tune?

Mama, do you think they'll try to confuse me?

"Mama, should I build a wall?"

In the chorus, the mother states that she constantly cares for her child.

The music of this song has a spacious sound, which is typical of the group "Floyd". Every sonic nuance is revealed fully and harmoniously. The bright and calming nature of the melody comes into sharp contrast with the depth and complexity of the issues raised in the lyrics. The song conveys philosophical depth and reminds us that even in adulthood, we continue to be children.

Klara Rumyanova and her famous "Little Mammoth Song"

You probably remember this amazing animated film and the touching melody about the desire to find a mother, performed by Klara Rumyanova. Behind the apparent simplicity of the plot lie profound reflections on the importance of a mother for a child - these thoughts, although intended for young viewers, remain important for adults too.

At first glance, the lyrics and melody of the composition seem quite simple and easy to digest. However, if you stop and listen more closely, it becomes obvious that this simplicity can be deceptive: in the chorus, the musical palette shifts from light and hopeful tones to sadder ones. The tempo and rhythm remain unchanged, but the vocals are filled with new intonations, which, combined with the verse, create a multi-layered image. A parallel can be drawn between the "Song of the Baby Mammoth" and the aforementioned work by Pink Floyd.

In fact, the grief of the animated film character associated with his mother has nothing to do with philosophical reflections - it is pure, sincere and evokes sympathy. The song performed by the baby mammoth reflects the theme of loss, but is filled with hope that he will still be able to find his mother.

James Brown - Losing His Mother

In 1973, the film "Black Caesar" was released, and the music for it was written by James Brown himself, who is often called the godfather of soul. One of the compositions included in the soundtrack was a song called Mama's Dead. If you've ever watched his energetic stage performances, the next track might surprise you with its unexpectedness.

The melody, filled with light and tranquility, creates a harmonious contrast with the emotional charge conveyed by the performer's piercing voice. This sad composition subtly reveals the protagonist's deep feelings for his mother and his sincere sadness over her loss.

"Earthlings" - "Green Spaces at the Threshold"

The composition, popular in the post-Soviet countries, establishes a connection between the concepts of "mother" and "Earth":

"As a son longs for his mother, as a son longs for his mother,

We grieve for our planet - it is the only one.

...and further:

"As a son longs for his mother, as a son longs for his mother,

"The mother awaits her son, and the Earth - her children."

The amazing combination of these two concepts creates an amazing result. Now no one in the world experiences loneliness - even those who are in the vastness of space. All that was necessary to do was to connect two words - "mother" and "Earth".

Queen - Mother Love

In the song by Queen from the album Made in Heaven, you can notice the desire for a deeper understanding of maternal love. In this work, there are no direct words of gratitude to the mother or characteristics of her qualities. Instead, the hero shares memories that convey the feeling that maternal love can restore lost feelings of security and warmth.

"In that city, in the cold and soulless surrounding space"

I don't need sympathy, I just want to find shelter...

"Mommy, open the door for me, please..."

The main character of the composition is an accomplished man. He is not worried about the issue of separation from his parents, as it was in the famous song of Elvis. "Mother Love" is a work that reflects the experience of an adult who has faced the severity of life. Now he remembers his mother's love and seeks to restore the comfort and care that surrounded him in his youth.

Spice Girls — Mama

Although the music of the Spice Girls seems quite simple, their lyrics still raise an important topic of relationships with parents. And not everything is so smooth in this relationship: “She was always my biggest adversary and she never let me go for a moment.”

“She caught me in places I shouldn’t have been.”

“Every day I crossed every possible limit.”

We owe the Spice Girls’ songs the emergence of the term “girl power,” which became a symbol of the third wave of feminism. In their chorus, you can catch a reverent and unconditional recognition of maternal love, personifying wisdom and sensitivity.

“Mama, I love you.

Mama, I feel a strong connection to you.

Mama, I love you.

Mama, you are my friend.”

Metallica - A Song About Mother's Love

In the same year that the Spice Girls unveiled their pop ode to mothers, Metallica released a serious track called "Mother Said" on their album Load. This composition talks about the difficulties associated with freeing oneself from maternal care, especially in those moments when it becomes truly necessary.

Famous thrash metal performers emphasize that maternal love plays a key role in the life of every person, being a reliable support. They also develop the theme of separation from parents, using the motif of the return of the prodigal son in their lyrics.

"Mama, I'm going back."

I'm not quite what you thought I was.

Nevertheless, a mother's love for her child,

"Surely, she always gave me help."

In Metallica's dark yet harsh poetry, the central phrase is "Mama, let my heart go." This moment emphasizes the desire for independence, without diminishing maternal love. The meaning of the composition is especially strong in the final chorus, when the powerful sound of distorted guitars fills the entire space of the sound mix.

Rammstein — Mutter

Despite the powerful and sometimes provocative sound characteristic of Rammstein, the band manages to touch on the tender and sensitive topic of motherhood.

Against the backdrop of heavy bass guitar riffs and rhythmic drumming, Lindemann's lyrics and voice stand out for their poignancy and tenderness. The melody is so powerful that it makes you want to cry, and the constant repetition of the word "Mutter" in the chorus intensifies the sense of tragedy. The symphonic sound, along with musical and verbal repetitions, creates a captivating and epic image of this composition.

In the song, the main character shares his fate, which is lacking maternal affection. He was not born naturally, but thanks to a scientific experiment, which left him without even a belly button. His dark and hopeless appeal to his mother ends with the following words:

"Mother, help me find strength."

It's amazing how many similarities can be found between the album Mutter and "The Song of the Baby Mammoth". Both works reflect the same sad story - a child never had the opportunity to know his mother, but continues to believe that everything will eventually end well. Interestingly, the visual imagery in these works is also similar: in the cartoon, a baby mammoth swims across the ocean on an ice floe, and in the music video of the band Rammstein, its vocalist Till Lindemann sets off in a boat to unknown distances.

Taylor Swift - A Day Like No Other

In 2008, Taylor Swift, the famous American country-pop singer, released her album Fearless, which mainly dealt with the problems of teenagers. That same year, while on tour, she quietly recorded the song The Best Day and created a home video for it to please her mother for Christmas.

Delicate harmony, soft country guitar sounds, and light percussion create an atmosphere in which Taylor shares memories of her childhood, expressing gratitude to her mother. It's the perfect way to spend this day.

Zemfira - "Mama"

In 2021, the album "Borderline" presents a controversial and gifted composition. It stands out for its complex musical rhythm, tense motor rhythms, and endless repetition in the chorus, which creates a special atmosphere. Zemfira, recognized as a foreign agent in Russia, doesn't sing the song full-throated, but rather whispers her lines. The arrangement's timbres, including the cymbals and pad in the third verse, have a soft, subdued sound that prevents the music from fully unfolding.

The lyrics convey a sense of unexpressed emotion, which perfectly matches the atmosphere of the composition itself. This three-minute drama emphasizes the importance of communicating with those who are dear to us while we have such an opportunity.

Mikhail Krug - "Forgive Me, Mom"

Mikhail Krug gained popularity due to his special attention to the experiences of the lyrical hero in Russian chanson. Nostalgia for maternal love and care is felt much deeper for his characters than for prosperous citizens. It is in difficult moments of life that we often remember the one who can love unconditionally and sincerely.

The composition "Forgive Me, Mother" stands out for its original arrangement - it uses unusual rhythmic structures and complex harmonic sequences. In addition, in the music you can catch elements characteristic of R&B.

The Beatles - In My Life

The composition In My Life was created by The Beatles and was included in the album Rubber Soul. The authors of this wonderful song were John Lennon and Paul McCartney. In our opinion, of all the tracks presented, this melody deserves the title of the best musical card for Mother's Day.

The musical component of the composition fully reflects the spirit of the Beatles: it is a fairly simple pop-rock melody, but with interesting accents. It features an original harmonic structure, as well as a piano solo in the style of Bach. This solo was created by George Martin at the request of John Lennon, who wanted the interlude to sound in a baroque key. During the recording process, Martin was unable to play it at the required speed, so he reduced the tape speed by half. As a result, when played back at normal speed, the interlude acquired not only the desired rhythm, but also a higher pitch, which created a sound reminiscent of a harpsichord.

Lennon's subtle and sophisticated lyrics are not intended for a specific recipient. However, they touch on themes of memories that will accompany us throughout our lives and of love that will never become just a memory.

"Though I know I can't get rid of it."

From people and objects that existed in the past,

I will often pause and reflect on them.

"Throughout my life, I will love you more."
