From 1995 to 2014, the program "Criminal Russia" aired on Russian screens. These documentaries focused on crimes and investigations in the Soviet Union and the post-Soviet space. The program had a significant cultural impact, inspiring numerous creative projects and becoming an important element of the media landscape. Thanks to its unique presentation and in-depth analysis of events, "Criminal Russia" captivated viewers and left an indelible mark on the public consciousness, igniting interest in forensics and the history of law enforcement. Sofia Ivanova, a student at the HSE School of Design, developed unique pocket editions that adapt well-known crime stories into plays. This innovative approach promotes the true crime genre, making it more accessible and appealing to a wider audience. Pocket plays not only draw attention to real crimes, but also offer readers the opportunity to immerse themselves in the exciting world of crime dramas.

When developing the project, I focused on choosing a topic that could inspire me and to engage the audience. I decided to focus on true crime, specifically the gripping stories from the TV show "Criminal Russia." This program offers a unique perspective on real crimes, making it particularly appealing for study and analysis. True crime is a unique genre that combines elements of documentary and detective fiction. It allows for a deeper understanding of the plot by delving into real events and analyzing them from different angles. Typography is an important element in the project, creating the necessary atmosphere. During the process, I explored various fonts to convey the character of each story. Ultimately, I came to the conclusion that the reader should feel part of the plot. I strove to make the book look as if it was created in the era it describes. This approach allows for a deeper immersion in the narrative and creates a unique reading experience.

The choice of book format is significant: the elongated style evokes associations with news feeds and crime reports, emphasizing the documentary nature of the work. The use of simple fonts, such as Arial and Times New Roman, gives the text a casual look and makes it more accessible to a wide audience. This approach facilitates better perception of information and creates an atmosphere of authenticity, which is especially important for works focused on conveying facts and real events.

The spacing between lines creates the effect of pauses, emphasizing the tension in the text. This technique allows time to stop at key moments, making reading more engaging and suspenseful. My goal was to create a pocketbook that does not contain illustrations in order to focus on the layout and typography. I aimed for the text to evoke visual imagery, as words and tone play a crucial role in crime stories. The only exception was the character page, where the illustrations contribute to a deeper understanding of the plot. Thus, I wanted to create a unique reading experience in which the text becomes the main tool for immersing oneself in the atmosphere of the story.

I use a needle-punching technique, which allows me to create unique textures by piercing the lower layers of fabric through the upper ones with a special needle. In my work, I mix fabrics of different textures, using leftovers from curtain production, primarily organza. In some cases, I dye the textiles to achieve the desired visual effect. This technique not only allows for the creation of original pieces but also promotes the recycling of materials, making the process more environmentally friendly.

The "Today is a Good Day" project arose spontaneously, without a pre-developed concept or sketch. I created a textile collage, inspired by bright moments. Its appearance coincided with the day the first snow fell, evoking memories of winter magic and childhood emotions. In our busy, everyday world, it's important to pause and savor simple joys. This project reminds us of the importance of finding time for small pleasures and appreciating the atmosphere of winter.

Typography and Identity of the Exhibition "...A Sound of Thunder": A Unique Look at the Works of Ray Bradbury

Alexandra Kashentseva, a Master's student in Art Direction, presented an interesting project – the exhibition "...A Sound of Thunder." This visual project is dedicated to the work of the outstanding writer Ray Bradbury and includes a set of identities, including the unique Ray typewriter font. The project aims to convey the "sensory detail" of Bradbury's works, allowing for a deeper understanding of his artistic style and atmosphere. The exhibition not only demonstrates aesthetic perception, but also explores the influence of literature on visual art.

At the beginning of my work, I drew inspiration from typography, reminiscent of the work of a typewriter, where letters move along the layout, like bees or cockroaches. However, after a hundred attempts, I realized that this approach did not convey the essence of Bradbury's universe and his unique vision of the world. I strove to create something deeper and more multi-layered, reflecting the complexity and nuances of his works, to truly convey the atmosphere and ideas embedded in his texts.

Curator Leonid Slavin suggested that I return to an old work on Mayakovsky, in which I used the technique of cutting out text, creating a lace-like fabric. I adapted this technique for my new project, which allowed me to further explore the connection between form and content in poetry.

With each new line, the leading decreased, and the letters merged into a single whole. This reflects the unique character of Ray Bradbury's works, in which ordinary things are transformed into mysterious and magical elements. I tried to convey this sensory experience, immersing the viewer in the author's world and his unusual fantasies. Through discussions of numerous ideas for transforming the letters, I worked diligently on each variant, which ultimately led to the creation of a typeface with a grotesque character. The initial concepts were quite eccentric, but during the process, the amazing letter "й" was born, which became a symbol of magic and unusualness. This font element not only brought originality to the design, but also became its distinctive feature, emphasizing the entire concept.

The board game "Mythikos", developed by the talented brand designer Athina Elefteridi, is an innovative approach to learning Greek. When analyzing the board game market, I discovered that there was no game that comprehensively promotes learning Greek. While there are limited variations, such as Scrabble or quizzes dedicated to Greek culture and history, these are insufficient for deep language acquisition. It's important to create a board game that combines vocabulary, grammar, and cultural aspects to help players not only learn the language but also understand its context and real-life use.

My visual research on the imagery of ancient Greek mythology and epic poetry in 19th- and 20th-century painting and printmaking informed the development of the game's unique style. Recalling my childhood illustrations, I realized that this project required a simple, vibrant, and easily scalable style. This approach will create an engaging visual style that will significantly enhance the game's appeal and engage the audience. Developing an art style based on classical myths will highlight the game's deep cultural roots and make the game more memorable for players.

The first character created for the game was Aphrodite. This choice had a significant impact on the project's visual style, which includes bright, contrasting colors and a minimalist approach enriched with elements of humor. Aphrodite, personifying love and beauty, sets the tone for the entire game world, making it more appealing and interesting for players.

In gray tones and simple clothing, the models become symbols of fatigue, reflecting the feelings and experiences we experienced this March. This project not only showcases fashion but also asks important questions about our reality, turning each image into a powerful visual statement.

We find ourselves in an era of rapid change that significantly affects our perception of time. Psychologists note that modern people often feel apathy and fatigue, as if the world around them is moving too quickly, leaving them behind. This feeling can lead to difficulties in adapting to new conditions and challenges, which makes it important to recognize the need to find a balance between external changes and the internal state. Understanding these processes will help us better cope with everyday stress and maintain emotional health in a fast-paced world. The feeling of fatigue permeates every area of ​​our lives. We feel exhausted, as if we've just been run over by a road roller. This state makes us vulnerable and depressed. The author of the project emphasizes the importance of this topic, emphasizing that many experience this feeling of being turned inside out. "Fatigued" This is not just a physical condition, it is a reflection of internal discomfort that requires attention and understanding.

After publishing my work on social media, I discovered Paolo Sirio's project "Street Ghosts", which also touches on themes of vulnerability and privacy, Using images of people from Google's panoramic maps, my project has a unique concept and focus, allowing me to explore these important aspects in greater depth within the context of contemporary society.

I sought to capture the fatigue of our generation through visual techniques such as bruising and crushed appearance. These elements helped my characters become symbols of modern man, who experiences pressure from the surrounding reality. My works show how stress and the constant struggle with external factors influence our perception of life and shape our character.

Each character is created from numerous fragments, which is dictated by a limited budget. This labor-intensive process became a significant advantage of the project. Uneven seams and unexpected creases create a visual glitch effect, prompting the viewer to reflect on the fragility of human nature. This approach not only highlights the uniqueness of the characters but also creates a deep connection between the viewer and the narrative, challenging them to consider the complexity and imperfections of life.

Despite difficulties, including torrential rain in Moscow, our team successfully completed the task. All efforts were worth it, and even a cut finger became a symbol of our dedication. We overcame all obstacles and demonstrated a high degree of responsibility and professionalism.

Initially, the concept of the project was significantly different, and only at the final stage it was transformed into its "inside out". During the process, we combined prints and images of "invisibles," which became a key element of the project. This work reflects the theme of hopelessness, symbolized by the metaphor of a chair piled high with clothes. Thus, the project explores deep-seated experiences and internal conflicts, creating a visual and emotional response in the viewer.

Despite the lack of a clearly defined image, we developed interesting combinations, such as a bow tie, a denim top, and a layered skirt worn over trousers. This experiment with textures opened up new horizons in the world of fashion. By experimenting with such combinations, we can create unique styles that emphasize individuality and originality.

Professional growth becomes evident when we recognize our mistakes. Playing with textures has always been my favorite method, and many images revealed their best side, although some aspects turned out to be unsuccessful. This experience will be a valuable lesson for my further development.

Creating art using traditional techniques not only develops artistic skills but also immerses artists in a variety of textures, making the creative process more comfortable and engaging. Each figurine is sculpted and painted by hand, and then goes through several stages of firing to achieve the desired texture and durability. This process allows me to infuse a piece of my soul into each piece and convey emotions that become tangible to the viewer.

I create ceramic sculptures, which allows me to immerse myself in a state of inner harmony and reconnect with my inner child. Working with clay gives me the opportunity to become the creator of a new reality, where I can express my feelings and ideas through art. As part of the exhibition dedicated to the outstanding futurist and architect Antonio Sant'Elia, a unique identity was created, presented by the talented student of the Master's program in Art Direction Elizaveta Kharitonyuk. This project has become an important part of HSE's educational initiative, emphasizing the importance of integrating theoretical knowledge and practical skills. The unique identity reflects Sant'Elia's ideas and principles, making it not only aesthetically pleasing but also conceptually significant, fostering a deeper understanding of his legacy. In his "Manifesto dell'architettura futurista," published in 1914, Sant'Elia presented a concept for architecture that reflects contemporary realities and strives to transform urban space into a unified whole. His ideas envisioned the creation of large-scale structures that would connect into a powerful system, creating a new type of urban environment that would respond to the spirit of the times and the needs of society. Sant'Elia emphasized dynamics and functionality, which became fundamental for the development of futuristic architecture.

Futurism, as a radical movement, aimed to destroy outdated forms of art and life. This inspired us to focus on a new approach to existence, in which buildings become not just houses, but true "house-cities." The idea of ​​Sant'Elia became the source of inspiration for the creation of a typeface that symbolizes the transition from static to dynamic. This typeface reflects the philosophy of Futurism, emphasizing the importance of innovation and change in architecture and design.

Throughout the design, I sought to convey the philosophy of Sant'Elia through the form of the typeface. The upward-sloping letters create a visual sense of infinity and emphasize the ambitious nature of its concept. My goal was for the typeface to not only look modern but also reflect the spirit of the Futurist era, embodying the rigidity and power of the architecture of that time. This approach allows for the creation of a unique visual style that fits harmoniously into contemporary design and is suitable for a variety of applications, from printed materials to digital platforms.

As part of this project, I collected numerous ideas for creating type systems that can adapt to dynamic concepts. Should large letters be used? Absolutely yes! Can a typeface include complex floral elements? Definitely yes, as long as it fits the overall concept. The development of adaptive font systems opens new horizons for creative expression and makes it possible to effectively convey ideas and emotions through the visual design of text.

Such ads are now less common than they were two years ago, which gives them historical value. Advertising, once ubiquitous, became an unofficial symbol of St. Petersburg. Every home offered "rest" and "relaxation," creating a comical contrast with the city's historic architecture. This prompted me to document and explore this unique phenomenon. I am interested in finding out whether a style associated with bad taste can be transformed into a fashionable product.

The graphic simplicity and unusual headlines of these anonymous works attract attention and spark interest. They conceal a random beauty, unintentionally created by the author. These elements of visual culture demonstrate how an unconventional approach can lead to unexpected results in design and communication.

A comparison of the typography of "Dosug" and pre-revolutionary newspaper spreads demonstrates that both trends are characterized by utilitarian design, prioritizing information over aesthetics. In modern times, both marginal advertising and vintage newspapers are distinguished by their extravagance, which unites them in this context. It is important to note that inspiration for graphic design can be found even in the most unexpected forms, which emphasizes the diversity and depth of this art.

I decided to create a three-dimensional space that reflects the problems and experiences of the main characters. To achieve this, I used paper "decorations," creating three-dimensional layers. The light from the lantern and the central character symbolize hope, which should always be present in difficult times. Thus, the illustration not only visually attracts attention but also deeply resonates with the reader's emotions, creating a unique experience of interaction with the text.

In this illustration, I integrated elements from other works, including the lantern and the house in the snow. These details serve as references to various literary and artistic sources, enriching the overall context of the work.

Working on Ivan Turgenev's story "The District Doctor" proved particularly inspiring for me. This work became familiar and relatable, as the realities of the Russian hinterland are easily perceived and evoke vivid images. Turgenev masterfully conveys atmosphere and emotional depth, allowing the reader to feel part of the events described. The story touches on important themes of human life, relationships, and social justice, making it relevant even today.

Working on Stefan Zweig's novella "The Invisible Collection" was a true challenge for me. The emotional depth of this work prompted me to critically evaluate each sketch. I strove to find ways to convey the tragedy and penetrating feelings inherent in the text. Zweig masterfully creates an atmosphere full of tension and internal struggle, and my goal was to reflect these nuances in my interpretation.

The main lesson I learned during this project is not to be afraid to implement unconventional ideas. During the process, I experimented with a variety of materials, such as fabric, ink, plasticine, and photographs of trees.
