The application of methods aimed at reducing waste and improving material recycling is becoming a pressing issue for the sustainable development of the construction industry.

Triodos Bank, in collaboration with EDGE, developed a unique building that can be easily dismantled and reassembled, preserving the value of the materials used. This innovative project was completed by architects RAU and Ex Interiors in the Netherlands in 2019, where Triodos Bank has its office. The building not only meets modern sustainable construction standards but also demonstrates the potential of modular design, making it an example of resource-efficient architecture.

The office was designed using 165,312 screws, allowing for easy disassembly and relocation. The building features large façade windows, and the parking lot houses solar panels for charging electric vehicles. Green roofs effectively capture rainwater, which is then used in the restrooms. All materials used in the office's construction are documented in an online database, ensuring their future resale. An orange peel lamp is an original and eco-friendly way to create cozy lighting in your home. Using orange peels to make a lamp not only gives the interior a unique look but also allows you to use natural materials. To create such a lamp, you will need fresh oranges, a knife, a candle or an LED bulb.

First, carefully cut the orange in half and remove the pulp. Then use a knife to shape the peels to fit your lamp. Afterwards, place a candle or LED bulb inside. The orange peel lamp will not only provide light but also a pleasant citrus scent that will fill the room with freshness.

Italian startup Krill Design has developed the innovative Ohmie lamp, which aims to solve the problem of inefficient use of bioresources. The designers were looking for a sustainable material and chose orange peels, as Sicily produces about 3% of the world's oranges. Using local resources not only reduces transportation costs but also minimizes the carbon footprint, making the product more environmentally friendly. The Ohmie lamp is an example of how creative solutions can contribute to the conservation of natural resources and sustainable development.

Each lamp is made from the recycled peels of two or three oranges. First, the peels are dried, then ground into powder and sifted. After that, they are added to a biopolymer base, which consists of plant starch. The next step involves creating pellets, which are then 3D-printed into lamps. Using a 3D printer to create lighting fixtures allows the company to minimize waste during production and promotes sustainability.

Each lamp is equipped with a dimmer switch, an LED bulb with an output of 70 to 90 lumens, and a power cord with a USB port. The lamp is 23 cm tall and weighs 150 grams. The color is enhanced with natural food coloring. The finished product has a texture reminiscent of orange peel and, according to the startup, even emits the aroma of orange cookies. This combination of functionality and aesthetics makes the lamp not only a practical light source but also a unique decorative element.

At the end of its life, the lamp can be disassembled into its component parts and composted. Currently, composting this product is only possible using industrial equipment. However, the company is actively developing a biopolymer binder that will have the necessary strength and be degradable in home composting. This will improve the product's environmental performance and facilitate its safer disposal.

MarinaTex

Alternatives to single-use plastics are becoming increasingly popular in modern society. Given growing concerns about the environmental situation, many are looking for sustainable solutions that will help reduce their use of plastic. Reusable containers, eco-bags, bamboo, and glass products are all examples of effective replacements. These alternatives not only help reduce waste but also promote an environmentally responsible lifestyle. By focusing on alternatives to single-use plastics, we can contribute to environmental protection and create a cleaner future for future generations.

MarinaTex creator Lucy Hughes, who studied at the University of Sussex, developed an innovative compostable material based on waste from the fishing industry as part of her graduate work. This eco-friendly material serves as an alternative to single-use plastic, offering a sustainable solution to reducing environmental pollution. Using MarinaTex promotes waste recycling and supports the transition to safer, more sustainable materials in the packaging industry. Lucy was inspired by the knowledge that by 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. Seeking a solution, she turned to MCB Seafoods, a fish processing plant and wholesaler in Newhaven. After a tour and analyzing various types of waste, Lucy decided to use fish scales and skins as a material for her projects. This approach not only reduces waste but also highlights the importance of sustainable use of marine resources. A waste product from the fishing industry, red seaweed agar, was chosen as the main binding component of this material. This solution significantly reduced transportation costs for the necessary ingredients. Furthermore, growing red seaweed requires minimal fresh water and fertilizers, making the process more environmentally sustainable. The use of agar not only promotes the rational use of resources but also supports sustainable production principles.

This new material, which has similar appearance and strength to traditional LDPE plastic, represents an innovative packaging solution. Its key advantages include ease of production and a low decomposition temperature, making it more environmentally friendly. Unlike known PLA bioplastics, which require industrial composting, MarinaTex packaging completely decomposes at home in just 4–6 weeks. This opens up new opportunities for sustainable consumption and waste reduction, which is especially relevant in light of today's environmental challenges.

The development of MarinaTex helps reduce the use of single-use plastics in food packaging and helps recycle waste from the fishing industry. This innovative material is not only environmentally friendly but also effective, representing a sustainable alternative to traditional packaging materials. MarinaTex packaging not only reduces plastic waste but also supports sustainable development by recycling available resources. Using MarinaTex in product packaging is an important step towards a more sustainable future.
