With the release of Google Glass in 2013, the world of augmented reality (AR) technology did not experience the expected revolution. Users' hopes were not met, and the product was soon discontinued. Many companies temporarily suspended their experiments with AR, but over time, this technology has taken a stable place in our daily lives. Currently, augmented reality is actively used in advertising, navigation, social networks, and contemporary art. We are pleased to present a unique project that combines the traditional printed book format with the innovative capabilities of augmented reality. This project opens up new horizons for interaction with content, offering users a unique experience of reading and perceiving information.

What is A.R.E?

A.R.E is a joint project of the renowned publishing house Vetro Editions and the Generative Hut platform. The book features 31 works of generative art by talented artists from around the world. Each piece contains a hidden key that can be activated using the free Aria Platform app. Simply point your smartphone camera at the page to bring the image to life and access additional content. The same principle applies to the photographs featured in our article. Don't miss your chance to experience this unique interaction with art.

Let's dive deeper into the analysis of this project and its unique features.

Vetro Editions: Innovative Publishing in the Heart of Berlin

Vetro Editions is a unique Berlin-based publishing house founded by graphic designer Luca Bendandi. It differs from traditional publishing houses in that it is an international network of professionals working in the fields of typography, architecture, journalism, art, and fashion. This collaboration allows Vetro Editions to create high-quality publications that meet current market demands and audience interests. The publishing house strives to innovate and maintain relevance in the world of print, making it a key player in the cultural and creative space. The publishing house offers a wide range of services beyond simply publishing books. It handles concept development, design, printing, and distribution. Bendandi has experience collaborating with renowned brands such as Thames & Hudson and Niggli Verlag, highlighting his professionalism and ability to handle complex projects. A striking example of Vetro's successful work is the album A.R.E., which demonstrates a high level of quality and originality.

When publishing books where every page must appear flawless on camera, it's crucial to consider not only print quality but also the binding. Vetro uses Swiss binding, which allows the book to open almost 180 degrees. This is achieved by not gluing the pages to the spine, significantly improving readability and visual appeal. This approach makes books more readable and ideal for photographing, which is especially important for publishers and authors seeking to draw attention to their content.

The combination of a softcover and high-quality black fill perfectly captures the uniqueness of Generative Hut's art. Each page of this book becomes a work of art in its own right, making it not just a publication, but a true masterpiece. This publication attracts attention and is remembered for its unique style and quality of execution.

An Innovative Platform for Generative Art

Generative Hut is an innovative online platform focused on supporting generative artists who use code and programmable devices to create unique works of art. The project's founder, Pierre Paslet, combines the qualities of a startup founder and a generative artist, working on the development of the platform. Launched in 2019 in London, the platform quickly gained popularity, forming an active community of over 70,000 members. Additionally, the number of Instagram followers has exceeded 100,000, demonstrating the growing interest in generative art and its creators. Generative Hut continues to evolve, providing artists with new opportunities for self-expression and audience engagement.

Generative art encompasses a variety of styles, and the A.R.E project selected works created using plotters and specialized drawing devices. Among the most popular models are the AxiDraw and Line-Us pen tools, which offer the ability to program the generation of abstract images. These devices open new horizons for artists, allowing them to create unique and complex visual compositions with a high degree of precision and automation. Generative techniques using such tools are becoming increasingly popular in contemporary art, combining technological innovation with creative expression.

Artworks created on paper are distinguished by their expressiveness and precision, opening up the possibility of their transformation into 3D format. The use of the Aria Platform has marked a significant step in the evolution of generative art, allowing artists and designers to experiment with new forms and visual effects. This process not only preserves the original qualities of the paper works, but also expands their perception in the digital space, creating unique and immersive visual experiences.

Aria Platform App Overview

Aria Platform is a free and intuitive app that offers users access to augmented reality (AR) content. This solution has become an essential tool for designers, brands, and event organizers, enabling them to integrate AR technologies into their everyday lives. Aria Platform simplifies the creation and distribution of AR content, enabling users to interact with the world around them on a new level. Using this platform not only improves the user experience but also increases audience engagement, making it an ideal choice for creative professionals and marketers.

With Aria technology, users can instantly view promotional animations on album covers, movie trailers on posters, and even get subway information through transit tickets. By simply pointing the camera at an image, users can see animated content directly on their device screen. This innovative feature makes interaction with visual elements more dynamic and informative, opening up new horizons for marketing and entertainment. Aria changes the way we perceive the world around us, turning static images into interactive stories.

Aria has a unique feature: scanned images are not stored in a database. The application performs recognition in real time, allowing animations to be displayed instantly. Unlike traditional QR codes, which simply redirect users to web pages, Aria ensures instant animation display with minimal loading when using a 4G connection. This makes Aria a more effective and convenient tool for interacting with visual content, providing users with a unique experience.

The Aria Platform played a key role in the implementation of the A.R.E art project, which is now available in book format. This project is not limited to galleries or museums, allowing viewers to enjoy works of art in their own comfortable environment. In 2021, A.R.E was featured in an exhibition at Pocko Gallery in London, where visitors could see the works in large format and learn about the process of their creation. This makes the A.R.E project unique and accessible to a wide audience, allowing anyone to enjoy art anytime, anywhere.

A.R.E's virtual accessibility ensures a fully immersive experience with a high level of comfort. To create the necessary atmosphere, some images are accompanied by musical elements, enhancing and deepening the experience. This approach allows users to not only see but also feel the project, which significantly improves the overall experience.

Watch a video about the A.R.E. exhibition to learn how augmented reality is changing the perception of art. This technology opens up new horizons for interaction with works, allowing viewers to immerse themselves in unique visual and audio experiences. Explore how augmented reality enriches art exhibitions and creates new opportunities for artists and audiences.

Music in the project

The sound design for the project was developed by the renowned Dasha Rush, one of the leading Russian DJs on the international scene. She is the founder of the Fullpanda Records label and its experimental direction Hunger to Create. Dasha Rush masterfully fuses diverse styles of electronic music, including techno and ambient, and actively participates in digital performances, making her work unique and in-demand.

Since 2014, Dasha has been implementing her art project, Aurora Cerebralis, which visualizes human brainwaves through lines of light, harmoniously blending with a rhythmic musical composition. This original approach is also reflected in the A.R.E. trailer, which demonstrates the synergy between sound design and visual art. Aurora Cerebralis becomes a unique example of the interaction of art and science, creating an immersive experience for viewers and listeners.

In her works, Dasha Rush emphasizes the concept of "neo-romanticism of machines and automated systems." This makes her choice as composer for this project particularly relevant. In her works, music not only complements the visuals but becomes an integral element that underscores the main idea and philosophy of the entire work. Thus, sound design plays a key role in creating depth and emotional richness, allowing viewers to immerse themselves in a unique atmosphere and understand the author's intent.

Results and Prospects

The A.R.E project is partially presented online, but a full understanding of its concepts is only possible through the printed edition. The book can be purchased on the publisher's website or on popular book platforms. This project demonstrates how designers integrate generative art and augmented reality technologies, which are becoming increasingly accessible and relevant to a wider audience. The use of these technologies opens up new horizons in the fields of design and art, allowing for the creation of unique and interactive projects.
