Learn moreThe Russian brand JOUJOU kids, founded in 2023, offers unique educational toys for children aged two to ten years. A small team of specialists creates educational puzzles, educational games, and sets that promote learning and creative development in children. All products are made in Russia, which guarantees the high quality and safety of the toys. JOUJOU kids focuses on creating engaging and educational content that helps children develop important skills through play.
In our interview with Irina Vorotyntseva, the project's co-founder, we discussed how watercolor illustrations foster creative intelligence in children. We also touched on the shortage of children's products in museum stores and learned about the serious ambitions of a small local brand that strives to collaborate with renowned artists and designers.
Co-founder of the JOUJOU kids brand, which specializes in educational toys for children. We offer unique educational toys that promote learning and skill development in young children. Our products are tailored to children's age and interests, providing a fun and rewarding play experience. JOUJOU kids strives to make learning through play accessible and engaging for every child.
The brand emerged as a result of companies' desire to create a unique image that would distinguish their products from the competition. Initially, branding was used primarily to identify products so that consumers could easily identify the product and its manufacturer. Over time, as the market developed and competition increased, brands began to play a more significant role in business. They began to be associated not only with product quality but also with certain values and a way of life. A successful brand creates an emotional connection with consumers, making them more appealing and memorable. Thus, brand development has become an important aspect of strategic marketing aimed at building trust with customers and strengthening market positions.
Before creating JOUJOU kids, I worked in finance, but my passion for creativity and art always remained paramount. Reading and traveling enriched my experience and broadened my horizons, allowing me to better understand the needs and desires of children and their parents.
We launched our project together with my colleague Ulyana, whom we met at the Skolkovo Business School. In 2022, many foreign toy brands left the Russian market, and this presented us with an opportunity to create something unique. We were inspired by various ideas, including the Scandinavian brand Kid’s Concept. However, given the high costs of materials and paints, we decided to adapt the concept to our reality in order to offer high-quality and affordable toys to Russian consumers.

We wanted to create not just a toy, but a beautiful and functional item that would last a long time. To achieve this, we collaborated with industrial designers and spoke with graduates of the Higher School of Economics and the British Higher School of Art and Design. However, the options they proposed did not meet our expectations. Russian toys often fail to compete with foreign ones in terms of design quality. Our assortment is practically devoid of interesting and creative models. Many people believe that toys should be simple, like tumbler dolls, and that designer solutions are only for adults. When they think of a "designer toy," most people imagine something expensive and collectible. However, for children, either inexpensive toys that are easy to break or products that adhere to the Montessori philosophy are suitable. It is important to rethink the approach to children's toy design to create more attractive and functional solutions for young users. The idea for educational puzzles arose from my passion for English botanical illustration. I have a collection of botanical diaries from various historical periods, which inspired the project. I decided to transfer elements of an early 20th-century diary to a wooden surface and supplement them with useful informational materials. This will not only attract the attention of botany enthusiasts, but will also become a valuable educational tool.

For our first product release, we collaborated with the Association of Botanical Illustrators. In October 2023, we launched our first puzzle, the result of this creative partnership.

We offer wooden puzzles, which include a variety of thematic sets. In our assortment you will find sets dedicated to animals, fashion, holidays, regions and countries, transport, the alphabet, as well as fruits and vegetables. For students beginning to study biology, we have special games such as "Animal Cell," "Plant Cell," and a series of games dedicated to the life cycle of plants and animals, such as the transformation of an egg into a chicken. Our puzzles not only entertain but also educate, promoting interest in biology and the world around us.

Up to ten specialists participate in the development of one set. The team includes 3-4 illustrators, as well as methodologists and psychologists who help adapt and refine the text. The art director coordinates the process. We also engage outside experts when necessary. For example, Ulyana Kirillina, a renowned speech therapist and blogger, was involved in the creation of the "Mother and Cubs" game.
Watercolor illustrations are becoming increasingly popular in design thanks to their unique aesthetic and expressiveness. They add softness and warmth, creating an atmosphere of comfort and artistic inspiration. These images can attract attention and evoke emotions, making them ideal for use in a variety of projects, from web design to product packaging.
One of the key advantages of watercolor illustrations is their diversity. Each work has an individual style that can highlight the uniqueness of a brand. Furthermore, watercolor textures and colors create depth and volume, making the design more interesting and multifaceted.
Using watercolor illustrations also allows you to stand out from the competition. In a world saturated with visual information, such unconventional solutions can attract the target audience and leave a lasting impression. They are ideal for creating a brand identity that will be associated with originality and creativity.
In conclusion, watercolor illustrations in design not only give projects an artistic look but also help establish an emotional connection with the audience, making them a valuable tool in the arsenal of modern designers.
Watercolor illustrations have a special aesthetic and are able to convey realistic images in a pleasing manner. Watercolor allows for the creation of soft transitions and transparent shades, making the works lively and expressive. This technique is ideal for depicting natural landscapes, portraits, and still lifes, as it adds depth and atmosphere. Due to their versatility, watercolor illustrations find application in both fine art and in illustrations for books and magazines.
We strived to create designer toys that are not only pleasing to the eye but also contribute to the development of aesthetic intelligence in children. In today's world, parents actively enroll their children in chess lessons and purchase educational games for logic and reading, but the development of aesthetic intelligence also plays an important role in personality development. Our toys help develop visual acuity from an early age, forming a harmonious perception of the surrounding world.

We decided to collaborate with museums and turn to "serious art" in order to create unique projects that combine modern trends and classical traditions. Collaborations with museums allow us not only to expand our audience, but also to make art accessible to a wider range of people. We strive to ensure that our work sparks interest and inspiration, and collaboration with cultural institutions helps us achieve this goal. Collaborating with museums enriches our experience and allows us to contribute to the cultural development of society.
In Russia, there is a gap in the niche of children's museum souvenirs. This sector is characterized by complexities and low profitability. The toy industry is primarily focused on profit, whereas collaboration with museums implies more cultural and educational goals than financial gain. The development of children's museum souvenirs can contribute to the popularization of culture and education among children, but requires attention to unique design solutions and meaningful content.

Reading is an important aspect of personal development and acquiring new knowledge. It helps broaden horizons, improve vocabulary, and develop critical thinking. In today's world, where information is available in various formats, reading remains one of the most effective ways to learn. Your choice of literature depends on your interests and goals. Books can be useful for both professional and personal development. Read a variety of genres to find something that inspires and motivates you. Don't forget that reading improves concentration and attention, which is especially important in a world of constant information flow. Entrance through the gift shop: how the Pushkin Museum sets new trends not only in its exhibitions. The Pushkin Museum, renowned for its rich art collection, attracts attention not only with its exhibitions but also with its unique approach to organizing its space. The gift shop becomes more than just a place to shop; it becomes an essential element of the museum experience. Here, visitors can find not only traditional souvenirs but also original art objects inspired by the exhibitions. This creates additional value for visitors, allowing them to take a piece of culture home. The Pushkin Museum continues to amaze, blending art and commerce to become a leading cultural center.
This young brand has successfully established partnerships with leading Russian museums thanks to its innovative approach and unique vision. The focus was on creating conceptual projects that meet the interests of both museums and the general public. This allowed us to establish strong partnerships and attract attention to cultural initiatives. The use of modern technology and active promotion on social media played a key role in popularizing collaborations. The brand also emphasized the preservation of cultural heritage, making it attractive to museums seeking new forms of interaction with visitors. Thus, the combination of creativity and strategic approach helped the young brand stand out from the competition and earn the trust of renowned cultural institutions.
The Pushkin Museum was the first partner to contact us. A marketing employee, being a mother, discovered JOUJOU on social media and suggested developing a unique product for the exhibition "Flowers, Fruits, and Musical Instruments in Italian Baroque Painting." As a result of our collaboration, we created a puzzle that includes masterpieces of Italian painting, which not only entertains but also introduces children to the art of this period.
We have successfully combined adult art with children's toys.

Studying children's museum toys was a fascinating challenge. We discovered that most museum merchandise is outsourced to design companies. This discovery highlights the importance of collaboration between the museum industry and creative agencies that innovate in the creation of toys inspired by museum exhibits. This approach not only enriches the museum experience for children but also fosters the development of unique products that can become an important part of the educational process.
The museum world is characterized by close ties, where institutions closely monitor each other. After a successful collaboration with one museum, the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center approached us with a request to develop a game for the exhibition "The Jewish Avant-Garde: Chagall, Altman, Shterenberg, and Others." This collaboration marked the beginning of a series of projects with other renowned museums, such as the Pushkin Museum, the Tretyakov Gallery, the Fabergé Museum, and the Museum of Moscow. We continue to actively develop interaction with cultural institutions, creating unique game formats that attract visitors' attention and enrich the museum experience.

We are currently actively preparing for the "Peredvizhniki" exhibition at the Tretyakov Gallery, where Levitan's "Golden Autumn" will be featured. As part of this event, we developed a unique appliqué toy illustrating an autumn landscape. Made of wood and felt, it allows for not only assembling and disassembling, but also coloring and touching. This creative solution promotes the development of artistic skills and allows you to immerse yourself deeper in the atmosphere of autumn, inspired by works of art.

There is a complex topic worth considering - icons and religion. Using color, symbolism and forms, you can explain to children the deep meanings and aesthetic aspects of this cultural movement. This will not only introduce them to religious culture but also develop their understanding of art and the symbolism embedded in icons.
