This approach isn't a one-size-fits-all solution, but it effectively helps save both budget and time, which is especially important for studios striving to successfully implement large projects.

In some cases, it is more practical to entrust the project to a single specialist, especially if there is no need to scale it to multiple media. Collaboration can be expensive, as it requires the involvement of several experts with specialized skills and a high level of qualifications, which, in turn, increases the overall cost of the project. Therefore, it's important to carefully evaluate when collaboration is worth considering and when it's better to focus on a single developer to achieve the best results.

To evaluate the feasibility of collaboration within a project, its scale and budget must be taken into account. Developing a design system for a large, established corporation requires significant effort and typically costs 1.5–2 million rubles. Meanwhile, creating an identity for a startup requires more modest investments. In the former case, engaging creative specialists often justifies the project budget, while in the latter, it may not yield the expected returns.

Project deadlines are crucial. Collaboration between designers allows us to effectively tackle large-scale tasks, speeding up the process and improving the quality of the final product. Collaboration facilitates the exchange of ideas and enhances creativity, which in turn impacts the project's success.

We collaborated with an IT recruiting startup that initially had a clear concept and a limited number of media. Together with a creative designer, we developed several metaphors for the identity and implemented them into a small set of media. This became a successful start for further development of the corporate identity and strengthening the brand. This approach allowed us not only to stand out in the market, but also to lay the foundation for the subsequent development of the company's visual identity.

What are the pros and cons of collaborations?

Advantages:

Cons can significantly impact the perception of a product or service. Each drawback should be considered when making a decision. Some of the main drawbacks include high cost, limited functionality, difficulty of use, or insufficient developer support. Additionally, compatibility issues are possible, which can lead to additional adaptation costs. It is also important to note that not all drawbacks are equally critical for all users, and their impact may vary depending on individual needs and expectations. Before choosing, it's worth carefully analyzing all potential drawbacks to avoid disappointment in the future.

  • Work is ineffective without good team communication—the lead designer won't understand the concept and won't be able to accurately convey the project's value to the client.
  • It's difficult to select people for the project—an inexperienced lead may assemble the wrong team (fail to consider their specific work needs, skills, and strengths), which will ultimately result in lost money and an ineffective result.
  • High collaboration costs—if you work in the Time & Material format, the collaboration cost will cost the studio 3x or more. But if the client's budget and the project format allow for it, the collaboration will pay off both financially and in the high-quality result.

Who determines the composition of the collaboration and who controls it?

The lead designer is responsible for organizing and overseeing the project. He is the central figure in decision-making, monitors results and manages the entire project structure, including plans and operational processes.

When solving problems, it's advisable to involve specialists whose working methods and approaches are familiar to the project leader. This will make the results more predictable and manageable. However, it's important not to limit specialists within rigid frameworks—giving them creative freedom promotes greater responsibility and professional growth. This approach allows designers and other team members to develop their skills and bring greater value to the project.

My personal approach to design has always yielded excellent results, both when I was creating projects independently and when I held a leadership role. Collaborations offer a unique creative freedom that is often lacking in commercial design. They allow for interaction with a variety of specialists, which contributes to the development of both soft and hard skills. This approach not only enriches the experience, but also expands horizons in the professional field, making work more exciting and productive.

It's recommended to involve three to five people to ensure a balance between diversity of opinions and manageability of the process. The level of interaction between participants and their ability to work as a team should also be considered. Choosing the right number of participants will help achieve better results and improve the quality of the final product.

  • Less than three is a couple or one, and such collaboration makes little sense.
  • Three people are the optimal number of specialists for a complex and large project that covers several aspects of the design system: web, print media, and digital. And to take into account all the nuances not only in the concept but also in the development of media or techniques, highly specialized specialists are required:

We worked on a project with an IT company seeking to reflect interaction with the service in its identity. For this purpose, we developed an illustration designer that allows you to quickly create and visualize user stories. The team included a creative designer responsible for the concept and a web designer who adapted elements for the service interface. We also engaged an illustrator to create an image package and a motion designer to showcase our work dynamically. This integrated approach ensured effective visual communication and improved customer experience.

In this situation, collaboration was necessary from a purely technical standpoint. The web developer lacked drawing skills, and the creative designer didn't utilize the style required for the project. Furthermore, a motion designer was needed to animate elements and create dynamic content. This collaboration allowed us to combine various skills and achieve the desired result.

How collaboration works and what misunderstandings can arise during the process

Designers find it convenient to communicate in a shared chat, such as Telegram, and work in Figma. In our studio, we preferred to use Discord, where we actively collaborated, discussed ideas, made edits, and shared positive vibes. This approach promotes effective interaction and improves teamwork.

To prevent misunderstandings during the work process, key participants need to develop friendly relationships and a loyal approach to each other. Each team member must show a genuine interest in the overall result. This condition is relevant not only for collaboration but for the entire studio's activities. Creating an atmosphere of trust and mutual understanding contributes to more effective interaction and improved end results.

Our team successfully organizes collaborations thanks to a friendly atmosphere. Each team member understands and respects the opinions of others, which creates the conditions for productive collaboration. Finding such people is not easy, but it allows us to effectively bring them together in collaborations without fear of misunderstanding. If discussions arise, we always find a compromise that helps strengthen team spirit and creates a positive atmosphere.
