Training program with a guarantee of employment: "Graphic Designer PRO"
Find out moreOften, requirements or ideas outlined in a technical specification create a difficult situation for a designer—they need to find a specific font or select a similar one. There can be many reasons for the need for an exact match: preserving the aesthetics of the Russian avant-garde, finding a typeface similar to another brand's font, or using a font you're unfamiliar with that needs to look "exactly like the one in this photo."
Fortunately, many tasks can be successfully solved with font recognition tools. In this article, we'll look at seven such services and test their functionality on several web resources. As an example, we will look for the Latin font used in Tokyo subway navigation.

WhatTheFont
The most popular tool for identifying fonts from images. The search process is carried out within the MyFonts platform database, which is especially convenient if you are sure that your request concerns a well-known font. However, this service may experience some difficulties with less common typefaces.
Another drawback is inefficient and inconsistent work with Cyrillic characters.
Users from Russia face restrictions when trying to access the site.

We analyzed the font in the photo, and the service offered several options that were similar.

WhatFontIs
A service with significantly more advanced technical capabilities:
- provides the ability to modify images, including adjusting contrast, brightness, and reducing noise;
- it is possible to limit the search to free fonts only;
- There is a font database that is larger than the WhatTheFont collection.
The disadvantage is that the system does not recognize the Cyrillic alphabet.

Font Matchenator
This service is an analogue of WhatTheFont and was developed by another company engaged in the distribution of fonts, namely FontSpring.
Font Matchenator functions Similar in many ways to other tools, but it provides the added convenience of displaying the licensing terms of detected fonts and offering free alternatives.
Works with both the Latin and Cyrillic alphabets.

LikeFont
Don't be intimidated by the many Chinese characters in LikeFont's interface, as this service is significantly superior to others in recognizing Cyrillic characters. It is designed to work with non-Latin alphabets, including hieroglyphs and Cyrillic, while handling Latin characters no worse than its competitors.

I note that this service turned out to be the only one that correctly recognized the font on image and named it Shin Go.

Identifont
This service, although not the most traditional, is very useful in some situations, as it is able to recognize fonts based on associative features. Perhaps you remember part of the font name, or you remember a distinctive letter, such as "a", or you have information about the creator of the font you need. Based on this indirect data, the service can help in searching for a specific typeface.
Although its library is not as extensive as that of other projects, it is quite satisfactory for finding fairly popular fonts.

FontsNinja
Identifying fonts used on websites is a fairly simple task, as font information is usually embedded in the page's code. However, to avoid having to dig into the code, there's a more practical solution—a browser extension called FontNinja.
With just one click, it provides information about the fonts used on a website, their sizes, where to purchase a license, and other valuable information. It's convenient, fast, and aesthetically pleasing.

Telegram chat: "What font is used?"
At the time of publication of this article, none of the existing services is able to recognize a font as accurately as the human eye. However, you will be able to use such “eyes” in the chat called “What is this font?”
