The publishing house "MYTH" has released a new book - Ruth Hammond's book "How to Draw a Children's Book". In this edition, the illustrator shares her experience of creating interesting and memorable characters, and also gives advice on the optimal placement of text and the promotion of your work. The second part of the book contains examples of artistic design of children's books with comments from the artists who created the illustrations. This book will be a useful resource for anyone wanting to master the art of creating children's books and develop their illustration skills. With permission from the publisher, we present a chapter dedicated to choosing a font for children's books. The right font plays a key role in how children perceive text. It should be easy to read, attract attention, and facilitate comfortable comprehension of information. The choice of font should take into account the age group of the target audience, as well as the design features of the book. Fonts with clear lines and sufficient space between letters will help children better perceive the text. Furthermore, it is worth paying attention to the font size, which should be sufficient for comfortable reading. It is important that the chosen font complements the illustrations and the overall style of the book, creating a harmonious perception.

Font Design

The font design of a children's book is an important element of its visual perception. The font should be bright and attractive to complement the illustrations, but at the same time, it should be clear and legible for both parents and children. It is important to keep in mind that the book is intended for children who are just beginning to learn to read, so the font should facilitate easy differentiation of words and letters. The choice of font influences the perception of the text and can maintain a child's interest in reading, which is a key factor in the development of their reading skills.

The text on this spread is set in a handwritten font. It does not contain decorative elements, and the lowercase letters follow spelling rules - thanks to this, the font is legible and ideal for use in a picture book. Font: LK-Teremok, boldImage: MIF Publishing

When choosing a font, simple fonts, both handwritten and printed, are the best choice. They add a touch of fun and interest to the design. Many handwritten fonts are available for purchase under license, but online resources make it easy to create your own font. When choosing a ready-made font or creating a custom version, it's important to keep several key principles in mind: use the correct letterforms, avoid serif fonts, which add short strokes to long lines, and avoid decorative fonts, especially in the main text of a book. The right font choice significantly impacts the perception and readability of the text, which is especially important for print and digital publications.

This spread shows a different kind of handwritten font. It's quite clear and fun to look at, but some of the lowercase letters—like "б," "д," and "в"—have decorative elements. Young readers might confuse them with other letters, so it's not the best choice for a picture book. Font: LK ForestImage: MYTH Publishing House
Here we see a standard universal font. It is easy to read, but the outline of the lowercase letter "a" is not quite familiar to children. In addition, the font does not create the feeling of a funny and unusual story, so it is not worth choosing for the text of a picture book. Font: ITC CharterImage: MIF Publishing

Use a limited number of fonts: one for the main text and another to highlight keywords, quotes, or audio clips. The font on your book cover should be clear, original, and eye-catching to make your book stand out. For book covers with illustrations, a bold, artist-created handwritten font is often used, which can be combined with one or two additional fonts used inside the book. It's important to remember that the principle of consistency applies not only to the color palette and illustrations, but also to the font design of the entire publication. The right choice of fonts improves the perception of the text and increases reader interest in your book.
