Task: not a terrible end of the world

For the first time, the art group implemented a large-scale project outside the walls of their native Annenkirche, choosing a cultural cluster in St. Petersburg for this. The exhibition's theme is one of the most complex and exciting biblical stories: the events of the last book of the Bible, "The Revelation of John the Divine," also known as the "Apocalypse." This book describes the concept of the end of the world, which makes it particularly relevant and significant for contemporary art.

It is necessary to prepare a poster for an exhibition dedicated to the topic The end of the world, while avoiding frightening or repulsive elements. The exhibition's central idea is that the apocalypse, in the Christian understanding, is a joyful event, marking the end of sinful earthly life and the beginning of eternal existence in the Kingdom of Heaven alongside God. It is also important to distance the exhibition from traditional church design in order to emphasize the event's modernity and its accessibility to a wide audience. This approach will attract attention to the exhibition and convey its positive message.

We concluded that there was no need for fiction, as the Bible already contains descriptions of events related to the end of the world. This sacred scripture provides information about various signs and circumstances that precede this event. Studying biblical texts allows us to gain a deeper understanding of what awaits humanity in the future and how these predictions can relate to modern realities. We decided to adapt the literal images presented in the text and give them a modern interpretation by adding references to heroes and villains from pop culture. This concept allows us to update the perception of classic characters, making them more relevant to today's audience and creating interesting associations with modern cultural phenomena. What a neural network can do

Initially, we planned to engage an artist to create the characters. However, unfortunately, the person we approached backed out at the last minute. This forced us to look for alternative solutions for quickly creating a complex poster.

In the summer of 2023, the idea arose to use a new tool - Midjourney. At that time, working with artificial intelligence in design was just beginning to develop, and Midjourney was just beginning to gain popularity. This solution opened up new opportunities for creating unique visual concepts and improving design processes.

Despite popular myth, a neural network cannot instantly create any image upon request. The generation process depends on the availability of suitable image examples online, as well as the ability of artificial intelligence to identify the necessary associations and relationships. The quality and speed of image generation are determined by training the model on a wide variety of data, which limits its capabilities in certain situations.

We had difficulty generating an image of a unicorn, as there are not enough high-quality illustrations of this mythical creature. As a result, we had to develop an image of the unicorn's head and a figure of Jesus on a horse separately, and then go through a complex process of combining these elements.

Unicorns have always been difficult. A spread of the book depicts five types of unicorns, as imagined by a 16th-century Parisian pharmacist. Photo: The British Library / Google Arts and Culture.

Eighteen months later, neural networks have become an integral part of design departments and marketing teams. Tools like Midjourney are now hard to imagine without them. However, managing Midjourney still requires teams' knowledge and expertise, making the process quite complex. Therefore, it's possible that a new job title—"Midjourney Operator"—will emerge in the near future, encompassing skills and expertise in working with neural networks to achieve maximum efficiency in design and marketing.

Designer Petr Baburin mastered Midjourney in three days and developed a poster for the exhibition. His passion for new technologies allowed him to create unique visual content that is both eye-catching and in line with modern design requirements. Using artificial intelligence in the process of creating graphics can significantly speed up the workflow and open up new horizons for designers.

Looking at this poster, the viewer has associations with a fantasy movie full of exciting battles, unexpected plot twists and the triumph of good in the finale. All this is true, but we are not talking about "Game of Thrones" or "The Lord of the Rings," but about the Bible. This sacred text is filled with dramatic events, profound moral lessons, and gripping stories that rival the most famous works of fantasy. The Bible offers the reader a unique journey through ancient times, full of conflict, redemption, and hope, making it relevant and interesting for modern viewers.

Each image on the poster is carefully crafted, making it a standalone work of art. In this article, we will explain why the poster looks the way it does and how it relates to the feelings of believers, emphasizing that it is not intended to offend.

The Origin of the Superhero Image of Jesus and Why It's Not Blasphemy

The image of Jesus as a victor on a white horse has its roots in chapter 19 of the Book of Revelation. This symbol serves as an expression of triumph and power, reflecting the victory of good over evil. In the context of the Christian faith, this image represents the hope of ultimate victory and salvation, making it an important element in theology and Christian art. Jesus, depicted on a white horse, symbolizes not only spiritual strength but also the triumph of truth, which inspires believers to follow his example. I saw the open sky, and behold, before me a white horse and a rider on it. His name is "Faithful and True," and in righteousness He judges and wages war. His eyes, like a flame of fire, radiate power and strength. On His head are many diadems, and the name inscribed on Him is known only to Him. His robe was stained with blood, and He was given the name "Word of God." Following Him were the heavenly hosts, dressed in the finest, purest, white linen, also on white horses. In the mouth of the rider was a sharp sword, intended to punish the nations. He will shepherd them with an iron rod. In the winepress He presses the wine of the severe vengeance of God Almighty. This image symbolizes the justice and power that will be revealed at the end of time.

On the lower part of His garment is written the name: King of kings, Lord of lords. This expression emphasizes His majesty and power, indicating the highest status and authority. The name He bears symbolizes not only His royal nature but also His spiritual dominion over all.

Revelation 19:11–16 describes the majestic return of Jesus Christ as a conqueror. This passage describes how Christ will appear on a white horse, symbolizing His power and righteousness. His eyes, like a flame of fire, testify to His omniscience, and on His head He wears many diadems, emphasizing His royal authority. He bears a name that no one knows except Himself, indicating His divine nature and uniqueness.

This vision also mentions that He is dressed in a robe stained with blood, symbolizing His sacrifice for humanity. The word of God, coming from His mouth, becomes a sword He uses to battle the nations, confirming His authority over all. Ultimately, Christ establishes a kingdom of justice in which He will reign forever. This passage is a powerful reminder of His return and final victory over evil.

Revelation 19:11–16 inspires believers to look forward and hope for the coming events, emphasizing the importance of being prepared to meet the Lord.

The grain is not the first example of illustrating verses from Revelation. This symbol also appears in classical church art, where it is used to convey deep spiritual and philosophical meanings. The image of the grain serves as a metaphor for growth, transformation, and spiritual awakening, making it relevant to many works of art and religious texts.

We have moved a little away from the traditional image of the text: our Jesus holds a sword in his hand, and not uttered by mouth. His head is free of various crowns, his eyes do not blaze like flames, and his garments are not stained with blood.

The image of the Second Coming of Christ as the Victor is of great significance for all Christians. Jesus conquers evil with the power of His Blood, and His Word, sharp as a sword, serves as a tool for distinguishing good from evil. This sword does not destroy, but purifies, allowing believers to distinguish true values from error. The Second Coming of Christ strengthens hope for the final victory over evil and inspires Christians to follow the path of righteousness.

The Word of God possesses unique power; it is living and active, penetrating deeply into the human essence. This word is sharper than any sword, dividing soul and spirit, and penetrating the most subtle layers of our consciousness. It is capable of assessing our thoughts and intentions, penetrating the heart of each person. Understanding and applying this word can significantly change our lives, guiding us on the path of true spiritual values.

Hebrews 4:12 emphasizes the power and penetrating ability of God's word. This verse speaks of God's word as living and active, capable of dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It reveals the intentions and thoughts of the heart, prompting us to deeply reflect on our spiritual lives. It is important to realize that this message calls us to self-reflection and understanding the true nature of our actions and thoughts. In light of modern realities, this verse remains relevant, reminding us of the need for spiritual growth and the search for truth in our lives.

The pelican became the personification of maternal love, which made it an important character in culture and symbolism of various religions.

The phoenix is a symbol of rebirth and victory over death. This mythical bird, according to legend, burns in fire and then rises from the ashes, gaining new life. This image is often used in literature and art, emphasizing the power of rebirth and transformation.

The church tapestry "Hortus Conclusus" (detail), created in 1480, is made of wool and silk and decorated with gold and silver threads. This work of art depicts key characters: Mary holding the unicorn by its horn, Adam piercing it, and Eve collecting the unicorn's blood in a cup. Importantly, Adam utters the words, "He was wounded for our transgressions" (Isaiah 53:5), which indicates a symbolic interpretation—the unicorn in this context is associated with Jesus Christ. The tapestry has deep religious significance and reflects important themes of Christianity, such as atonement and sacrifice.

The New Jerusalem, described in the final chapters of the Book of Revelation, is considered heavenly not because of its location, but because life there corresponds to God's will. For the author of Revelation, it is important to emphasize that the true Kingdom of God will be established on Earth, and that people will live in it, resurrected in new and transformed bodies. These are not just disembodied souls living in a heavenly castle in the clouds, but real beings experiencing the fullness of life in accordance with the divine plan.

The book of Revelation mentions many Sevens: seven angels, seven trumpets, seven bowls of wrath, seven lampstands, seven seals, and seven signs. These symbolic elements have profound meaning and highlight important aspects of biblical prophecy. Each of these seven elements plays a key role in revealing the divine plan and future events, making them important for understanding Christian doctrine. Seven as a number is often associated with completeness and divine order, emphasizing the significance of these images in the text.

Each of the seven angels is mentioned only in the context of "blowing their trumpet," but how exactly this happened is not revealed. One can imagine the terrifying sound of a battle trumpet warning of danger. And indeed, after each of the seven trumpet melodies, serious catastrophes occur. These events underscore the importance and significance of each signal that sounds at the moment when the angels call out to humanity.

Understanding the goodness of God and the overall plan of the Book of Revelation opens a new perspective on the catastrophic events described therein. They can be compared to renovating an apartment. At the beginning of the process, chaos does arise: dust, dirt, destruction of the old. However, eventually the time comes when one can enjoy the renewed space. So it is at the end of time: for evil forces, these changes turn into a catastrophe, while for everyone else, new horizons of joy and hope open up.

Renovations are best done to the sounds of high-quality jazz. This genre of music creates a relaxing atmosphere, promoting concentration and inspiration. Jazz allows you to focus on the process, making work more enjoyable and engaging. Create the perfect renovation environment by choosing jazz pieces that will help you achieve your desired results and enjoy every moment.

The last element we will look at is a girl soaring on wings. This image has many theological interpretations, the most common of which is its symbolism of the Christian Church during the time of persecution. Furthermore, this image contains allusions to the Virgin Mary, the twelve apostles, and other significant biblical stories.

A great sign appeared in the sky: a woman clothed in the sun, with the moon at her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. She was pregnant and experiencing severe pain and labor pains. Another sign also appeared in the sky: a huge red dragon with seven heads and ten horns, with seven diadems on its heads. Its tail carried a third of the stars from the sky and cast them to the earth. This dragon stood before the woman, preparing to devour her baby as soon as she gave birth. The woman gave birth to a son, who was destined to rule all nations with an iron rod; the child was caught up to God and His throne. The woman fled into the wilderness, where God had prepared a place for her to feed her for one thousand two hundred and sixty days.

War broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon. The dragon and his angels also entered the battle, but they were unable to stand, and there was no longer room for them in heaven. The great dragon, the ancient serpent known as the devil and Satan, who deceived the entire universe, was cast down to the earth, and his angels were cast down with him.

Revelation 12:1–9 is an important passage from the Book of Revelation, containing symbolic imagery and profound spiritual truths. This passage describes a woman clothed with the sun, which symbolizes the people of God, or the Church, and a dragon, representing the forces of evil and opposition. This scene illustrates the struggle between good and evil and also anticipates the final victory of God's kingdom.

The woman giving birth to a child symbolizes the birth of the Savior and His mission on earth. The dragon seeking to devour the child represents Satan and his attempts to destroy God's plan. However, despite all trials and threats, God's protection and intervention ensure safety and salvation.

This passage emphasizes the importance of faith, perseverance, and hope during times of spiritual struggle. Revelation 12:1–9 reminds believers that despite difficulties, ultimate victory belongs to God and His people. By reading this text, we can strengthen our faith and gain confidence that evil will be defeated.

The poster and its components became the official branding of the exhibition, which formed the basis for the design of the landing page, tickets, information signs, and other elements within the exhibition space. This approach ensures a unified style and increases event recognition, creating a harmonious experience for visitors.

During the exhibition, we observed various reactions, and we cannot deny that this project caused a lot of controversy. However, we managed to achieve the main goal - to awaken interest in the Christian faith among visitors.

We hope that they will be inspired to open the Bible and explore its contents in more detail. Reading the Bible can deepen their understanding of its teachings and stories, which, in turn, contributes to spiritual development and personal growth.
