Learn moreThe Shrift Publishing House, the Smena Center for Contemporary Culture, and the ABCdesign Publishing Group present Vladimir Krichevsky's book, "The Fourth Page of the Cover." This publication explores the back of a book, which contrasts with the front. The book offers a unique perspective on design and visual presentation, focusing on elements that often go unnoticed but play a crucial role in the perception of a publication.
With the consent of the publisher, we present a chapter dedicated to paired covers. In this chapter, we will examine the specifics of creating and designing paired covers, as well as their importance in attracting readers' attention. Paired covers are becoming increasingly popular among authors and publishers, as they are not only aesthetically pleasing but also create a unique identity for a book series. We'll discuss key elements to consider when designing paired book covers, such as color palette, fonts, and artwork. Understanding these aspects will help authors and designers create harmonious and memorable designs that contribute to successful book sales and popularity.
The Formal-Semantic Pair Component
Books vary widely, including some odd works with abstract text, sometimes even purely visual. In most cases, such books have a clear beginning and end and are designed with a corresponding cover. The front cover may illustrate the first paragraph, while the back reflects the concluding thoughts. However, such curiosities are more often a product of the imagination than reality.
Graphically mastering the back cover of a book allows not only to expand the content but also to adapt the visual elements to the paired plot of the work. This also provides an opportunity to experiment with contrasts and differences, which is an important aspect of graphic design. It's important to distinguish between semantic pairs and double entendres, as they can serve different functions in visual perception. My examples feature both elements, highlighting the diversity of approaches in graphic design.
It's difficult to visualize, but if the cover had more than two sides, the book itself might not need one. Modern design and printing technologies meet the needs of discerning viewers, leading to the creation of books whose interior pages are designed in the style of the cover, including even the text pages. This emphasizes the importance of design in the perception of a book and influences the reading experience.
I will have to return to the cover, and in particular its "not best" part.

The image prominently features a ploughed field, and the book's protagonist, a tractor, powerfully "drives" toward the viewer. This motif of distance creates harmony with the direction of the reading. Raising the horizon to such heights requires courage and determination. The color red plays a significant role here, requiring no further comment. It is interesting that the book is not dedicated to the "red plowmen" and does not even touch upon agriculture, opening up other aspects and topics for reflection.

The binding covers are two tiles, likely life-size. The book's designer and bookbinding craftsmen have achieved remarkable success in imitating the appearance of ceramic work. The conveyance of content in such a naturalistic execution is difficult to overestimate. It is worth noting that reproductions of both tiles are also featured on one of the book's central spreads. This is, in fact, the only thing that connects them.

The back of the book features a silhouette of a man from the same era. For a publication dedicated to classical artistic crafts, the close proximity of the ovals at the spine and the asymmetry of the sides appears rather unexpected. The repeating motif on the binding and endpapers seems intrusive, but unlike the previous example, this repetition does not create enough of an impression.

Daniil Kharms's Wife. The front cover of the book features a portrait of her husband, viewed from a three-quarter angle, looking to the left. Kharms's famous profile photos are also oriented in this direction and, unfortunately, tend to be overly dramatic. Both gazes appear somewhat absentminded, creating the impression that the couple cannot truly appreciate each other, even through the spine of the book. The cover composition of "man—woman" is repeated twice more, and each time the woman appears on the back. Can this phenomenon be explained?

The book cover prominently features the letter A, executed in a semi-uncial style, which corresponds to the theme of the work about Russia. It is important to note that a neutral font would not be able to fully convey the atmosphere of the book. The reverse spread features the letter B, which disrupts the harmony of the design. However, this cover visually echoes the previous one, which is due to the large forms and the general direction of the design.

The second page of the first issue of Pravda newspaper is located behind the first. It appears that this issue consists of only two pages, otherwise the newspaper reproduction would also occupy the third page of the cover. Remarkably, the newspaper cover can be viewed with a magnifying glass. Despite the limited material, the anonymous designer showed courage and originality in his approach.

The number of horizontal stripes corresponds to the number of letters in the Latin alphabet. On the reverse side are vertical stripes of the same thickness and pitch, which correspond to the number of numerals. Both types of stripes wrap around the cover flaps, creating an interesting visual effect. In this context, they appear as perpendicular elements, emphasizing their relationship. The graceful curl stands out both in the composition and in the context of the topic under discussion.

A car tire is depicted paired with a drawing of a rubber tree leaf on the book cover. On one side is the raw material, on the other, the finished product. This is a simple and clear solution. Interestingly, the image of the tire looks quite simple, without unnecessary embellishment. In 1935, minimalism still had a right to exist, but later, complaints could arise about its dryness and demands to add elements that would enliven the presented material. At that time, the term "ozivlyazh" even appeared, often used humorously, but had a negative connotation.

The book was published in The Hague in 1994. However, an earlier example of Soviet minimalist design lends special significance to this edition. The back of the envelope is also closed, although one would logically expect the opposite. In my observations, creative experiments by designers often lead to interesting semantic inconsistencies.

The girl's portrait is presented in two projections. The back of her head, combined with the cheerful face on the front, illustrates the concept of the book cover as a symbol. The image of the back of the head is only possible on an artistic cover designed with a certain humor. From the back, the portrait looks more touching, since on the front, the girl's entire head of hair is transformed into a title, including the name of the comedy's author. This approach emphasizes the contrast between playfulness and depth, drawing the reader's attention to the book's content.
To achieve the best results in SEO optimization, it is important to consider several key aspects. First, you need to use relevant keywords that match the topic of your content. Secondly, the text structure should be logical and understandable for readers and search engines. You should also pay attention to meta tags, titles, and descriptions, as they help search engines better index your site.
Furthermore, regularly updating content and adding new materials helps improve search engine rankings. It is also important to ensure an internal and external link structure to increase the authority of your resource. Don't forget about mobile optimization and site speed, as this affects user experience and search engine rankings.
Maintain audience interest by offering high-quality and unique content that answers questions and solves user problems. This will not only increase traffic but also improve interaction with your site, which in turn will positively impact its SEO positions.
