Find OutReturning to Kazakhstan: The Freelancer's Path in the New Reality
Currently, as a freelancer, I can work from anywhere in the world, which gives me access to the European and international markets. At the same time, I remain a citizen of Kazakhstan, which adds confidence in the new conditions. Multicurrency cards significantly simplify the process of receiving payments from abroad, although it is worth noting that transfers from Russia have become more complicated. Working in the international arena opens new opportunities for professional growth and development.
Moving to Kazakhstan turned out to be difficult, as I did not have significant financial reserves. I only had a small amount in my account, enough to live for one or two months. These funds played a key role in an emergency situation when flights began to be canceled, and I urgently needed tickets. Unfortunately, many airlines did not refund money for canceled flights, which complicated the situation. I also needed to use funds to ship my husband's equipment, including 3D printers. However, new restrictions prevented this equipment from being shipped, adding further complications to the relocation process.
At the time, I was expecting client fees and completing several large projects, which gave me hope for additional funds. Unfortunately, payment delays for freelancers are common in our industry. However, in this case, this turned out to be a fortunate circumstance: despite the delay, all orders were paid.
Problems When Moving: What You Need to Know
Moving to another country often brings many challenges, and one of the most serious is the financial aspect. I encountered problems transferring payments from my agency. Not having Russian citizenship and having a residence permit in the new country created significant obstacles. The bank refused to process official transfers, even to a Russian card, which significantly complicated access to the funds earned. These financial difficulties highlight the importance of thorough preparation for an international move, including researching the banking and tax systems of the new country, as well as possible methods of transferring money.
The time difference is an important, albeit less noticeable, aspect of working in online education. I teach webinars for an online school on Moscow time, and they often end late at night. For freelancers accustomed to working nights, this may seem normal. However, it's important to consider that such a schedule can impact productivity and health, especially if the work involves intensive teaching and interaction with students. Proper time management and consideration of time zones will help create a comfortable environment for both teachers and students.
The freelance market has undergone significant changes. After February 24, a sharp decline in orders from Russia was recorded, negatively impacting project budgets. This circumstance is forcing many freelancers to reconsider their work strategies and adapt to new market conditions. With a limited flow of orders, it's important to seek new sources of income and develop skills to remain competitive in a changing environment.
Changing work schedules play a significant role in the lives of freelancers. In Russia, many prefer to work nights and weekends, which can negatively impact their health and quality of life. In Kazakhstan, the situation is different: a more balanced approach to work is observed there. Weekends truly are weekends, giving freelancers the opportunity to spend more time relaxing and enjoying the fresh air. This regimen promotes overall well-being and productivity, making work more efficient and enjoyable.
Emotional State and Work in Kazakhstan: An Insider's View
I'm currently in my hometown, recuperating and working on creative projects. Although I'd like to find work here, I understand that salaries will be lower than elsewhere. I don't want to compete with local professionals while I have other employment options.
I'm currently updating my portfolio, which has accumulated numerous unpublished projects. A heavy workload with Russian assignments has prevented me from sharing my work, but now it's especially important. I strive to showcase my achievements and skills to attract the attention of potential clients and partners.
I have several clients from Europe with whom I've developed almost friendly relationships. I especially appreciate the support of one client from Germany, who offered several interesting assignments. This support is not only financial but also moral, which is extremely important in today's environment. Interacting with such clients helps strengthen business ties and promotes professional growth.
Collaborating with international clients provides a high level of comfort and satisfaction. This type of work avoids deadline pressure and grueling revisions, making the process more enjoyable. Fees are generally higher, and the respect for our work increases significantly. This promotes a deeper understanding of the value of their work and increases motivation.
Given current events, Russian artists are not actively accepting orders. However, there is hope that this situation is temporary. Russia maintains a high level of professionalism in design, illustration, and visual culture, which creates the preconditions for market recovery. Confidence in the future and a commitment to quality will help Russian specialists regain their positions and attract clients.
The Future of Russia: Prospects and Feelings of Emigrants
February 24th became a significant starting point for many who began looking for a new home. In our case, preparation for emigration began long before this event. We carefully studied information about life abroad and mastered the language to be ready for new challenges. Now, recalling the path we have taken, we can confidently say that returning to Russia is not planned for us. The only exceptions are rare visits for important reasons or to visit our hometowns. Emigration has opened up new horizons and opportunities for us, and we are ready for new adventures in another country. Of course, sometimes I feel nostalgic for that cozy apartment where we spent so many happy moments and for the friends we were close with. Many of them have moved around the world, but we continue to keep in touch online. However, when it comes to the climate, atmosphere, and friendliness of the people, I feel much more comfortable in Kazakhstan. The quality of food and standard of living are significantly higher here, which brings me satisfaction. Kazakhstan offers not only beautiful natural conditions but also the opportunity to enjoy life in a friendly and hospitable environment.
Helpful Tips for Those Planning to Emigrate
Creative individuals considering moving from Russia should recognize that the fear of loss is a natural reaction. They must find the inner resources and confidence to boldly move toward a brighter professional future. Relocation can open new horizons and provide unique opportunities for development and self-expression. It is important to focus on the positive aspects of change and use them to achieve success in a new environment.
Despite challenging conditions, many designers choose to continue their careers in Russia. Their stories are inspiring and demonstrate that even in a changing environment, it is possible to adapt and develop. The successes of these professionals confirm that creativity and perseverance can lead to new opportunities and prospects. It is important to remember that difficulties can become an impetus for finding innovative solutions and working methods, which in turn promotes growth and development in the design field.
