The history of the Red Dot Award dates back to 1954, when Karl Hundhausen, an employee of Krupp, initiated the creation of the "Society for Industrial Form." The main goal of this society was to improve the aesthetics of the environment and modernize German consumer goods. It also sought to change the image of the Krupp steel company, which had suffered from a negative reputation due to its long-term collaboration with the Nazi Party and the production of weapons for the Wehrmacht. The Red Dot Award has since become one of the most prestigious international design competitions, recognizing achievements in innovative design and product quality.
In 1955, the first annual design competition was held, becoming a major event in the design world. That same year, a unique exhibition entitled "Permanent Exhibition of Industrial Products with Attractive Design" was opened at the Krupp family residence. In 1961, the exhibition was moved to the Old Synagogue in Essen, further highlighting innovation in design. However, in 1979, after 18 years of operation, a fire occurred due to a short circuit, destroying a significant portion of the exhibits.
