In stressful situations, managing emotions becomes a real challenge. At such moments, we can do things that we later regret. Psychologists Irina Ushkova and Artur Abramenkov, leaders of the course "Our Emotions: Learning to Understand, Express, and Manage Them," shared methods to help you control your feelings and reactions during difficult times. They explained the importance of being aware of your emotions and using effective strategies to manage them. These skills will help not only in stressful situations but also in everyday life, improving your overall emotional state and interactions with others.

I often do things I regret. Why does this happen?

Sometimes our behavior is driven by feelings and emotions, which prevents us from assessing the situation clearly. We can make decisions based on momentary impulses, which can lead to undesirable consequences. It's important to develop the ability to analyze your emotions and make more informed decisions to avoid mistakes and achieve better results in life.

I often do things I regret. Why does this happen?

Sometimes we make decisions based on emotions and feelings without properly analyzing the situation. This can lead to mistakes, as rational thinking allows us to more accurately assess circumstances and consequences. Emotional reactions can cloud common sense, which makes it important to be able to control your feelings and make informed decisions. It's important to develop critical thinking skills to avoid impulsive actions and cope more effectively with various life situations.

How can I learn to control my emotions?

Containing and suppressing emotions are ineffective strategies. Instead, it's important to learn to regulate your emotions. Emotional regulation helps you better cope with difficulties, maintain mental health, and improve your quality of life. By mastering emotional management skills, you can respond more effectively to stressful situations and maintain harmony in your relationships with others.

Emotion is the body's natural reaction to various events and situations. We experience emotions continuously, and this is a normal process, as they arise instinctively and play an important role in regulating our behavior. For example, fear can cause us to seek shelter, love prompts us to care for others, and resentment can lead to conflict. Emotions, therefore, serve as an important tool in our interactions with the outside world and help us adapt to changes in life.

Clinical psychologist Irina Ushkova notes that suppressing emotions can lead to a loss of connection with oneself. This can cause difficulty understanding one's feelings, an inability to express them, a constant state of depression, and the development of psychosomatic illnesses. Emotional health plays a key role in overall well-being, and it is important to learn to consciously perceive and express your emotions to prevent negative consequences.

But what if I experience bad emotions that prevent me from living peacefully?

Emotions, even negative ones, play an important role in our lives. Each emotion, regardless of its nature, can be useful in different situations. Understanding and accepting all emotions allows us to better adapt to circumstances and find solutions in difficult situations. Therefore, it's important to recognize that even negative feelings can be a source of valuable experience and contribute to personal growth.

Let's say your boss demands you redo a report again. You feel furious and, in a fit of anger, yell at them, which could lead to your dismissal. Instead of conflict with management, this anger can become the impetus for learning to protect your personal boundaries. It's important to discuss with your boss the reasons preventing you from completing the report, ask for more time or resources, and clearly express your dissatisfaction with the tone in which you are being communicated. Being able to openly discuss your needs and set boundaries will help create a healthier work environment and increase your productivity.

In both cases, you expressed your emotions, but in the first case, they led to ineffective behavior that is unable to resolve the conflict with management. Emotions are important, but they must be managed correctly to achieve a constructive dialogue and find the optimal solution to the problem.

It turns out that I'll realize my behavior is ineffective only after I've already done something wrong...

Ineffective behavior can be prevented. The key is to listen to your inner feelings and recognize when your well-being begins to approach a crisis. This will allow you to take the necessary steps to improve your psycho-emotional state and avoid negative consequences. It is important to develop self-awareness and actively work on your emotions, which will help maintain productivity and harmony in life.

A crisis often occurs as a reaction to significant psychotraumatic events. Such situations can be individual for each person. Clinical psychologist Artur Abramenkov emphasizes that these include layoffs at work, loss of income, divorce or separation from a partner, as well as illness and important events in the country or the world. It is important to understand that each of these situations can cause severe stress and require professional support to overcome the crisis. Seeking help from a psychologist can help you cope with negative emotions and restore your psychological health.

A situation that can trigger a crisis has three key parameters. These parameters determine the level of tension and can significantly influence decision-making in critical conditions. Understanding these characteristics helps you better prepare for crisis moments and develop effective strategies to overcome them.

  • has negative consequences;
  • requires, at first glance, immediate decisions;
  • causes a strong desire to get out of it by any means possible, including through destructive behavior - for example, if we talk about betrayal, this could be a desire to take revenge, hit, be rude, and so on.

Okay, I realized that I am being overcome by emotions that are getting in the way. What should I do next?

  • Stop, don't let panic take over you. Take a break, don't react immediately, don't make decisions right now.
  • Normalize your breathing. Take a deep breath and then exhale slowly to reduce your body's physical response to stress.
  • Take action. Now that you've calmed down, act rationally - try to simulate all possible outcomes of the situation (both good and bad), and prepare an action plan for all eventualities.

What if your emotions don't subside for several days?

To achieve inner peace, it's important to activate the parasympathetic nervous system. It plays a key role in relaxing the body and helps relieve stress. By activating this system, you can improve your emotional state and enhance your overall well-being.

Here are some tips to help you succeed in this task. First and foremost, it's important to clearly define your goals and expectations. This will allow you to focus on the core aspects and avoid unnecessary deviations. Remember the importance of conducting a detailed analysis of the current situation. This will help identify weaknesses and identify areas for improvement. Use quality tools and resources to achieve your goals. Remember to keep information up-to-date and constantly update your knowledge in your field. Pay attention to feedback and reviews, as they can be a valuable source for improving your work. Constant self-development and learning are the keys to success in any endeavor.

  • Exercise. Spend 5-30 minutes doing this and tire yourself out. Your body will also do everything it can to get rid of fatigue and unpleasant symptoms.
  • Distract yourself. Think about what surrounds you right now. You can do this exercise: sit in a comfortable position and, concentrating on individual parts of your body, tense them for 5-7 seconds, and then slowly relax. This will help switch your focus from thoughts to sensations in your body.
  • Breathe. Try breathing deeply, concentrating on the process of inhaling and exhaling. Or use the "four squares" method - inhale for a count of four, then hold your breath for a count of four, exhale, and hold it again. The goal is the same: reduce the impact of stress on the body and distract yourself from negative experiences.
  • Try the cognitive reconstruction method. It involves trying to find the positive in unpleasant life circumstances.

These tools can be useful for temporary relief, but they cannot solve internal problems. If anxiety persists for a long time, it is important to seek help from a psychologist. Professional support will help you understand the causes of anxiety and find effective ways to overcome it. Don't ignore your feelings and emotions; taking care of your mental health is just as important as your physical health.
