How are nutrition and human health related?

There are terabytes of information on proper nutrition in open sources. TV and radio programs are devoted to a healthy diet, bloggers talk about it, and the media writes about it. But despite the availability of information, health problems due to poor diet are only growing.

According to the Ministry of Health of Belarus, more than 50% of cases of heart disease, about 40% of cases of lung, rectal and prostate cancer in men and about 60% of cases of breast, uterine and intestinal cancer in women are directly related to poor diet.

nutrition.

Similar studies were conducted in other countries. For example, according to the National Institutes of Health, of the 702,308 deaths of Americans caused by cardiovascular diseases in 2012, 45% were due to poor nutrition.

Among the most dangerous chronic diseases caused by poor nutrition are: hypertension, diabetes, cancer, atherosclerosis, angina, and coronary heart disease. But there are some ailments we take for granted, a part of life, without even realizing they can be alleviated by simply changing our diet. These include, for example, indigestion, bloating, fatigue, and nervousness. Missfit magazine has compiled a list of 20 diseases caused by an unbalanced diet.

— Various nutrients enter the human body along with food — proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals — which the body needs to perform certain functions, — shares dietitian and nutritionist Nadezhda Ryabova. — For example, proteins are necessary for the construction of cells and tissues, the formation of digestive enzymes, iodine and selenium are for the adequate functioning of the thyroid gland, vitamins A and E are for full immunity and other vital processes. Therefore, for the normal functioning of the body and the prevention of the development of diseases, it is important to monitor your diet.

But the difficulty is that each person is a unique story. Their own hormonal balance, unique lifestyle, metabolism and different goals. You can’t just take a diet from the Internet, follow the instructions and achieve results. After all, a certain diet may be suitable for one patient, but contraindicated for another. Or it will give results, but later. Therefore, research and a scientific approach are indispensable here.

What does a nutritionist do?

A nutritionist is a specialist who studies the effect of nutrition on human health and helps people stick to it. healthy eating habits. They help select a diet based on a person's goals, provide guidance on healthy eating, monitor results, and make adjustments to the diet if necessary.

Nutritionists are consulted by people who want to lose or gain weight, improve their overall well-being, increase the effectiveness of their workouts through diet, or work on preventing Alzheimer's disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and other pathologies.

A significant part of a nutritionist's work is working with clients. This is divided into several stages: getting to know each other and collecting anamnesis, determining goals, and creating a personalized nutrition plan. Communication with a nutritionist does not end after the consultation. He monitors the results and helps the patient adhere to the recommendations.

Among the main responsibilities of a nutritionist are the following:

  • Assessing the quality of nutrition and the patient's health.It is not enough to simply add healthy foods to the diet. When creating a diet, the nutritionist takes into account the patient's health, lifestyle, and metabolic rate.
  • Consultations and education.First of all, a nutritionist is a consultant on healthy eating. He does not prescribe treatment, but helps the client change their lifestyle and eating habits to prevent possible diseases in the future.
  • Conducting seminars and master classes.Nutritionists can independently conduct courses on healthy eating or speak at seminars organized in fitness clubs, sanatoriums and hospitals.
  • Menu creation and recipe adjustments.The nutritionist creates an individual plan and a list of products for patients, develops menus in schools, hospitals and sanatoriums.
  • Studying the composition of products and various dishes.A nutritionist must understand how different dishes or individual components combine with each other, how they affect health, and how the recipe can be improved. He must understand which products can be added to the list, and which of them contain unacceptable components.
  • Nutrition research.This may include surveys of patients or control groups during clinical trials, laboratory studies of food products and dietary supplements.
  • Collaboration with nutritionists and doctors of other specialties to provide comprehensive care to the patient.

Nutritionist and dietitian. What are the differences?

The professions of a nutritionist and nutritionist are similar in many ways - both specialists select rational (optimal) nutrition for people and help them stick to it. But there are also significant differences.

The main difference is in education and professional role. A nutritionist is a doctor who has the right to prescribe tests, make a diagnosis, and uses diet as one of the treatment methods. A medical school diploma in dietetics or a related specialty is required to work.

A nutritionist is a consultant on healthy eating. They cannot prescribe treatment, but a specialized medical education is not required. Although a doctor with a dietetic diploma can work as a nutritionist. But not vice versa.

— A nutritionist has the right to work only with healthy people to prevent disease, and a dietitian is necessarily a doctor who can work both with healthy people for the purpose of disease prevention and with sick people to use therapeutic nutrition as a therapeutic tool. A nutritionist can not only prescribe therapeutic diets, but also organize meals in sanatoriums and hospitals, and prescribe medications,— Nadezhda explains. —Both specialists can work with clients individually or with groups. In some cases, a nutritionist may also work with sick individuals, but they must work with a doctor as part of a team, clearly delineating duties and responsibilities. A nutritionist must have a thorough understanding of food composition and how they complement each other, be able to formulate a balanced diet based on a person's health and dietary preferences, and be knowledgeable about dietary supplements and their appropriate use. But it is important to understand that the job responsibilities of a nutritionist and dietitian may differ depending on the specific country.

Where can a nutritionist work and how much does he earn?

There may be a misconception that a nutritionist is a light version of a dietitian who simply advises people on healthy eating and helps them choose a healthy diet.

In reality, there are plenty of areas where a nutritionist can work. This profession is in demand in various industries, but some may require a higher medical education. This will depend on the country's legislation. However, a specialist can find work not only in large cities but also in smaller towns.

In addition to private consultations, a nutritionist can:

  • Create diets for hospital patients.Although a nutritionist does not have the right to prescribe tests or treatment, he or she can select a diet based on the opinion of the attending physician. For example, they can conduct a consultation for people with diabetes or select a diet for a patient who is treating a stomach ulcer. However, this will depend on the country - in Belarus, only a nutritionist can deal with such issues.
  • Work with sanatoriums and boarding houses.Here, a nutritionist creates a general menu for the dining room, as well as selects a diet and consults with patients and vacationers. And here, too, this moment depends on the country - in Belarus, only nutritionists are currently involved in this issue.
  • Consult athletes.A nutritionist can create a diet for football clubs, track and field athletes, bodybuilders, taking into account the specifics of training, stages of preparation for competitions, or periods of recovery from injuries.
  • Collaborate with food industry enterprises.A nutritionist can develop new food technologies and formulate new products. Improve those that were previously released and ensure that the composition complies with laws regarding the content of food additives and preservatives.
  • Work in laboratories or in government agencies,where they can be involved in developing nutritional standards.

As for salaries, the level of income largely depends on the place of employment. The portal belmeta.compublished vacancies with a salary range from $125 per month for a specialist in a boarding school to $600 per month in a health complex. It is also worth considering the fact that such a specialist can also work freelance. For example, consulting businesses and private clients. And here the income can increase.

As for other countries, nutritionist is a popular and in-demand profession there. According to Glassdoor, the average salary of a nutritionist in the US is $68,000 per year. According to indeed, specialists earn an average of $21.94 per hour. Both full-time and part-time positions are available. Remote work with such a profession is not usually practiced there.

How to become a nutritionist

A nutritionist is a relatively new profession for Belarus and is just beginning to develop. This profession is not taught in universities. Any specialist with the necessary knowledge and experience can advise people on healthy eating. A specialized academic education, as well as certification, is not required. You can gain the necessary knowledge through distance learning courses. When choosing them, the Skillbox.by editorial team recommends paying attention to the teaching staff, the relevance of the curricula, and the opportunity to work on real cases.

Educational requirements and certification features for nutritionists vary by country.

It is also important to consider that there are certain areas of work where higher education in medicine, biology, or chemistry is a mandatory requirement:

  • If you are going to engage in scientific work in the field of healthy nutrition, conduct research on various products and food additives, develop new nutrition standards;
  • Sports nutrition consultations - if you are going to help athletes, advise sports teams and develop nutrition programs;
  • Children's nutritionist - if you plan to work in children's sanatoriums and create menus for school cafeterias;
  • Gerontologist Nutritionist — if you plan to develop nutrition for nursing home residents;
  • If you plan to work as a nutritionist who consults people with diabetes, chronic kidney disease, or gastrointestinal tract diseases.

What skills does a nutritionist need to develop?

A nutritionist's work covers not only the field of nutrition, but also various fields of science, including medicine, chemistry, and biology. Among the hard skills that a nutritionist needs to develop are:

  • Knowledge of anatomy, understanding of how the gastrointestinal tract works and how different substances are absorbed.
  • Ability to compose and conduct questionnaires. A nutritionist should be able to compose questionnaires and surveys for different categories of patients.
  • Ability to develop a food diary. This is a tool that helps the nutritionist monitor progress, and the patient - to adhere to the specialist's recommendations.
  • Knowledge of specialized software.Calorie calculators, electronic diaries, applications that help make lists of healthy foods.
  • Knowledge of office programs.You must at least be able to use spreadsheets (Excel) and applications for working with presentations.

Soft skills are no less important in the work of a nutritionist. Communication skills, a good memory, attentiveness, responsibility, and the ability to persuade without hurting the patient's feelings will come in handy here.

How modern nutrition trends affect nutrition, dietetics and medicine

Today, many people are changing their established eating habits. For example, they become pescatarians—they don't eat poultry or other animal meat, but eat fish and other seafood; vegetarians—they don't eat meat from living organisms, but do consume dairy products; vegans—they don't consume any animal products; or pollotarians—they only eat poultry. Many of them also prescribe their own diets, following the advice of bloggers or instructions posted online. These trends are reflected not only in the work of nutritionists, but also in the work of doctors in other specialties.

First, when developing a diet or treatment, a nutritionist must not only consider the habits and views of their patients. It's important to remember that eliminating animal fats and dairy products from the diet can lead to a deficiency of calcium, vitamins D, PP, and even a whole group of B vitamins. This can have a particularly noticeable impact on health if a person already has certain chronic diseases. Athlete nutrition consultants also face challenges—they need to compensate for protein deficiencies, which is challenging given that some animal amino acids are essential and have no equivalent in plant foods. Secondly, doctors and consultants must be able to change the minds of people who already have certain views and simultaneously adapt to their way of thinking. Simply writing down a diet on a piece of paper is not enough. They need to conduct comprehensive educational outreach, increase motivation, explain in detail how certain foods and diets affect health and help achieve goals, and present rationale and scientific evidence.
