What is an ego state in transactional analysis and how many are there?

In the process of communication between two people, each of the interlocutors exhibits certain internal positions that influence their interaction. These internal positions, according to the theory of Eric Berne, are called ego states. There are three main ego states: parent, adult, and child. Each of these states determines how the participants in communication perceive each other and how they react to what is happening. Understanding these positions can significantly improve the quality of interactions and help resolve conflicts.

  • Parent state - in this state, we use instructions, directively voice rules of conduct and social norms, and convey prejudices and biases;
  • Adult state - thanks to this state, we try to objectively assess the world and make independent decisions;
