An experienced expert in their field is often eager to share their knowledge and experience, which raises the question: why not develop an online course? On the one hand, this can become a source of income, since you offer your knowledge in the format of an educational product. On the other hand, creating a free course can serve as an effective tool for strengthening your expert image and attracting a new audience. Online courses allow you not only to share information but also to establish a connection with students, which helps build trust and enhance your reputation in the professional field.

How to transform your expert knowledge into an online course? There are companies that offer turnkey online course creation services, taking on all aspects: from methodology development and filming to promotion and technical support. However, you can save significantly if you do most of the work yourself. At the initial stage, questions often arise: How much investment will be required for launch? How to develop a curriculum? Where to begin the course creation process? This guide outlines the key steps for developing an online course and provides advice on important aspects to consider at each stage. Proper planning and understanding your target audience will help you create a successful learning product that will attract students and ensure high engagement.

Several Key Principles

An online course is an educational product, so when developing it, you should consider both educational and marketing aspects. It is important to consider who and what we will teach, as well as determine the methods and approaches to teaching. Planning the course creation process, including organizing the content and presentation formats, is equally important. It is necessary to emphasize the value of the course to the target audience and develop a marketing strategy to attract attention and ensure its successful implementation.

If you are going to sell your course, it is important to calculate the unit economics during the preparation stage. This includes assessing all cost items and the required budget. Launching an online course without funding is almost impossible, as at least a minimal budget will be required for its promotion. A proper calculation will help you understand how much investment will be required to successfully launch and promote your course.

To successfully develop a course, it's important to avoid mistakes and stagnation, so it's recommended to create a detailed project plan using a Gantt chart. The duration of the course will depend on its scope, as well as whether you'll be working independently or hiring assistants, such as methodologists. The course format also significantly impacts the timeline. For example, if the course includes recorded videos, you need to factor in the time needed to film, edit, and post the content on the platform. A webinar-based course typically requires less preparation time. Depending on these factors, the process of creating an educational product can take anywhere from three weeks to five months. When planning, it is worth considering all these aspects to achieve an effective result.

Think over the idea of the course

At this stage, it is necessary to determine the main topic of the course and the target audience. It's important to clearly formulate the educational objective—what your course should teach participants and how they will benefit. You should also establish a business objective, such as revenue, personal brand development, or other aspects you want to achieve. At this stage, you create a hypothesis that you will subsequently test.

If your professional field is floristry, then at this stage you need to clearly define the training format. Decide whether you want to train beginner florists or conduct highly specialized courses to improve the skills of existing professionals. It is also important to consider whether this will be a long-term course or a short seminar on a specific topic, such as wedding bouquet design. Choosing the right format will help you attract your target audience and meet their learning needs.

Analyze the market and target audience

At this stage, you need to gather additional information that will help confirm or refine your hypothesis, as well as more clearly define the course objectives. This will allow you to create a more structured and effective training program that meets the needs of the target audience.

In online schools, the producer is often primarily responsible for forming and testing hypotheses. They search for course ideas, analyze the market and target audience, develop a concept for the educational product, and oversee its subsequent development. However, you can also conduct the analysis and develop a concept yourself, which allows you to gain a deeper understanding of audience needs and market specifics. An independent approach to analysis can significantly increase the chances of your course's success.

Our future students are people striving to develop in a specific area of knowledge and skills. They share common characteristics, such as a desire to learn, an interest in professional growth, and a desire for self-improvement. They often face challenges related to a lack of practical knowledge, a lack of the necessary skills for successful work, and difficulties in understanding the theoretical aspects of their chosen field.

Students may have questions about how to effectively apply their acquired knowledge in practice, how to adapt to changes in their field, and what resources to use for further education. Their goals range from professional development and acquisition of new competencies to career advancement and career change.

The course will address these issues and challenges, providing the necessary knowledge and tools to successfully achieve these goals.

  • When creating a program, it will allow you to formulate learning outcomes so that they help the target audience achieve a specific goal or solve a problem;
  • When promoting a course, it will be clearer how to create a unique selling proposition to attract the target audience to your course.

During the target audience research stage, it is necessary to take several key aspects into account. First of all, it is important to determine the demographic characteristics of your audience, such as age, gender, education level, and location. This data will help you better understand who exactly you are directing your marketing efforts to.

You should also analyze the interests and preferences of potential customers. Understanding what topics and products attract them will allow you to create more relevant content and offer precisely those solutions that meet their needs.

Studying the online behavior of your target audience is equally important. This includes analyzing the websites they visit, the social networks they use, and the ways they interact with content. This knowledge will help you choose the right channels for promotion and information delivery.

Furthermore, it's worth considering the pain points and problems of your audience. Understanding the difficulties your potential customers face will allow you to offer them effective solutions and improve the quality of your product or service.

Therefore, a deep understanding of the target audience during the research stage is the foundation for successful marketing and developing products that meet customer needs.

  • Client type - who will buy your product, and if the course is free, who will be interested in taking it.
  • General client traits - what they are like, what they think about, how they live. This information will be useful when promoting the course, so you can speak to your audience in the same language and more accurately convey the benefits of the product. For this purpose, the persona method is often used in marketing—we wrote about it in one of our articles.
  • Problems—what worries the potential client, what they are failing at in the area covered by your course.
  • Motivation—what is the client's goal, how do they want to solve their problem?
  • Selection criteria—what is important to the client when purchasing training or choosing an online course.

Target audience research can be carried out using two main methods. The first method is a survey. To conduct it, you need to develop a questionnaire with relevant questions and contact specialized communities, such as VKontakte groups or Telegram channels, with a request to complete it. It is important to be prepared for the fact that the number of responses may be limited, and as the number of questions in the questionnaire increases, the likelihood of receiving responses decreases. The best option is to have your own professional blog or channel, as this will allow you to conduct a survey among your already loyal subscribers, which will, in turn, increase the number of responses and improve the quality of the research.

The second method of target audience research is in-depth interviews. This approach involves personal interaction with several representatives of the target audience. They can be found both in specialized communities and among your network, including friends, colleagues, and clients. For more information on conducting interviews and surveys, see our article. In-depth interviews provide insights into the needs and motivations of your target audience, which helps shape your marketing strategies more accurately.

When conducting a target audience analysis, it is important to use a tool known as an empathy map. This method helps you gain a deeper understanding of your customers' needs, desires, and motivations. You can learn more about the empathy map in our previous article.

It's important to identify your competitors, analyze their offerings, and identify their key advantages and strategies. This will allow you to stand out from the competition. Create a unique offering for your target audience, focusing on aspects not covered by other courses. This approach will help attract attention and increase interest in your product.

To analyze your competitors, you need to identify educational products related to the topic of your future course. It is important to answer the following questions:

  • Who is the audience for these courses?
  • What results do they promise upon completion of the training?
  • What training programs do competitors offer?
  • What unique selling propositions (USPs) do competitors offer?
  • What format (synchronous, asynchronous, or blended) do other courses on similar topics offer?
  • Is a diploma or certificate awarded upon completion of the course?
  • Who teaches the courses?
  • How much do courses on similar topics cost?
  • How do competitors promote their products, where do they advertise?

Competitor analysis provides valuable information that can be used to improve business strategies. It can help you identify the strengths and weaknesses of your competitors, understand their approaches to marketing and sales, and identify in-demand products and services in the market. This allows you not only to adapt your own offerings but also to find new opportunities for growth. Furthermore, competitor analysis helps optimize pricing policies and improve customer service, which can ultimately lead to increased market share and increased competitiveness.

  • Understand how the market operates and adjust your understanding of it. For example, you may realize that there are plenty of courses on wedding bouquets, but few on creating dried flower arrangements. If your target audience analysis shows that this topic is of interest, it could be a good option.
  • Discover existing formats for implementing a similar idea—are synchronous webinars and master classes prevalent on the market, or, for example, asynchronous video courses.
  • Distinguish yourself from your competitors by understanding how your course can stand out. Let's say other courses are purely online, but you have the opportunity to organize in-person practice or an internship at a flower shop for students.
  • Get a more specific understanding of the target audience by studying who similar courses are advertised at, how their authors address the audience, and so on.

Design the training program

At this stage, the methodological component of the course is developed, including determining the topic and teaching methods. The structure and scenario of the course play a key role in its success. The quality of this work directly affects the number of students who complete the course, their results, satisfaction with the training, and willingness to recommend the course to others. Mistakes made at the design stage can have a negative impact on subsequent stages. If you have a budget for course development, it is advisable to engage a professional methodologist. If your budget is limited, below are some recommendations to help you create your own program. For the first course, it's optimal to use a linear program design, where topics flow sequentially. In modern online education, it's important to design learning based on outcomes. This means focusing not on the course content, but on the knowledge, skills, and abilities students should master by the end of the course. This approach ensures more effective learning and helps students achieve specific educational goals.

To achieve the desired result, you need to follow a certain algorithm of actions. It is important to adhere to each stage to ensure the effectiveness of the process. Start by clearly defining the goal, then gather the necessary resources and information. After that, develop an action plan, taking into account possible risks and obstacles. Implement your plan, regularly monitoring progress and making adjustments as necessary. After completing all stages, evaluate the results and draw conclusions for future projects. By following these steps, you will be able to achieve your goals with maximum efficiency.

  • Define the goal of the educational program – why someone should take your course, what will they gain from the training? After carefully analyzing the target audience, answering these questions will be easy. In a broad sense, the goal could be, for example, introducing students to floristry as a hobby, a deep dive into theory, or mastering practical floristry skills. And although the topic will essentially be the same, depending on the goals, the resulting programs will be completely different. However, the goal should then be as specific as possible, "grounded" in specific skills – more on this below.
  • Identify the practical skills and competencies necessary to achieve the learning goal – what the person should learn as a result. For example, choosing flowers and prolonging their freshness, mastering the techniques of assembling and wrapping different types of bouquets, and taking beautiful photographs of your work for your portfolio and social media.
  • Consider the theoretical component—what your student needs to know to achieve the learning objective. In our example, this might include the basics of botany, color, composition, and marketing in the flower business.
  • Formulate the planned outcomes of the educational program based on the previous points. Bloom's taxonomy, a six-level system of learning objectives arranged from simple to complex, is often used for this purpose. For example, here are some outcome statements from the Skillbox course "Floristry from Scratch": "Master the spiral technique, work with foam, mesh, and greenery," "Improve your speed at assembling bouquets and arrangements," "Learn the basics of arrangement and the characteristics of different plants," "Learn what a floral recipe is and become familiar with the formula for creating it," "Learn how to create collages."
  • Choose assessment methods—how you will verify that students in your course have truly learned the knowledge and acquired the skill. These methods should correspond to what is being assessed at a particular moment, and Bloom's Taxonomy can also be helpful here. For example, a test may be sufficient to assess theoretical proficiency (the "remembering" level). But to test the skill at the "application" level, you will need practical tasks - for example, independently assembling a bouquet.
  • Divide the planned learning outcomes into logical blocks - topics, modules, lessons.
  • Think about good homework that students will complete during the course - of course, if you have the opportunity to organize their checking. Assignments for independent completion should be based on information from the lesson or module to which they relate, and should not be too simple and not too complex. We wrote in more detail about the development of assignments in one of our articles.
  • Prepare the necessary training materials - presentations, practical tasks, tests, checklists, and so on.

Choose the course format

At this stage, it is necessary, based on the expected results of the program and the studied data about the target audience, to choose the optimal course format. As mentioned, there are three main formats: synchronous, which includes a series of webinars with an expert; asynchronous, which consists of pre-recorded video lectures; and blended, which combines live lessons with viewing of recorded materials. Choosing the right course format can significantly impact its effectiveness and learner engagement, so it's important to consider your target audience's preferences and needs.

Several key factors influence the choice of a product or service. Firstly, this is the quality and reputation of the brand. Users prefer to buy from established manufacturers. Secondly, price also plays a significant role. Comparing the prices of similar products helps consumers make an informed choice. A third factor is reviews and recommendations. Potential buyers often turn to other users' opinions to evaluate the reliability and effectiveness of a product. Finally, availability and ease of purchase can also influence purchasing decisions. By considering these aspects, companies can improve their offerings and attract more customers.

  • Available resources. A recorded course is generally expected to be of higher quality than a live broadcast. Therefore, preparing and creating such materials requires more time and money for contractors who will organize the filming process. However, with some skill, you can achieve decent quality with minimal investment by recording video on a smartphone. It's also worth considering whether you are prepared to present in front of an audience live, manage the group's attention online, or whether you prefer recording (as this allows you to redo any awkward moments).
  • Characteristics of the target audience. The information obtained from analyzing the target audience will help you understand how potential students prefer to consume content, whether they are willing to join scheduled classes or prefer to choose their own study time, and whether they want to study in a group of like-minded people or individually.

In one of our articles, we examined in detail the features of various learning formats and the criteria for their selection. If you are planning to create an asynchronous course, we recommend supplementing it with several live webinars. This will increase audience engagement and create a more interactive atmosphere, which contributes to better assimilation of the material.

Choose the necessary digital services

To create an optimal learning environment, it is necessary to consider a number of key conditions. First of all, it is important to organize a comfortable and quiet space free from distractions. You should also ensure access to the necessary resources, such as teaching materials, technology, and tools that facilitate effective assimilation of information. It's important to create a supportive and motivating atmosphere where learners feel confident and free to ask questions. Finally, regular feedback and opportunities for self-assessment will help learners track their progress and adjust their learning approach. The choice of learning format significantly impacts the organization of the process. For synchronous classes, it's essential to use live streaming services. Such broadcasts can be conducted free of charge, for example, on YouTube. There are also specialized webinar platforms that offer various features for online learning. Many of them have free versions, but access to the full range of tools may require a paid subscription.

Initially, asynchronous learning can utilize free resources. For example, uploading videos to a YouTube channel with a link. You can also host educational content on cloud services such as Google Drive or Yandex Drive. These approaches ensure materials are accessible to students and allow for an efficient organization of the learning process.

If you're ready to invest in hosting educational content, consider specialized platforms for creating online courses. These solutions offer the ability to develop structured educational programs, integrate text, images, and videos into lessons, and organize live broadcasts. Furthermore, such platforms offer convenient tools for monetizing your courses, allowing you to effectively manage revenue from educational activities. Using these platforms will help you improve the quality of instruction and attract more students.

Many educational platforms offer integration with LMS (Learning Management Systems). On these platforms, students have access to the necessary educational materials, take tests, complete assignments, and can view their grades and feedback from instructors. For training organizers, this also provides the opportunity to track course popularity, student performance, and other key metrics that help evaluate the effectiveness of an educational project. Using an LMS improves the learning process and enhances the quality of educational content.

In an online course, it is possible to organize checking of practical assignments that participants complete independently. If the final assignment involves creating a specific product (for example, a finished bouquet in a floristry course), it's a good idea to encourage students to capture their work in photographs or videos. These materials can then be sent to the assessor for evaluation. This approach not only simplifies the evaluation process but also allows participants to showcase their skills and creativity, which contributes to more effective learning.

If your budget is limited, free cloud services can be effective for file sharing. However, if you can afford to invest in access to a learning management system (LMS), most such platforms offer tools for students to upload their work. Instructors, in turn, can easily check assignments, assign grades, and provide detailed feedback through this platform. This makes the learning process more convenient and effective for both parties.

It's important to consider in advance how students will receive organizational information, including schedule changes, homework deadlines, and progress reports. Many small online schools use instant messaging and email newsletters for this purpose. Additionally, LMS platforms often offer automated notifications and reminders, greatly simplifying communication. This approach provides students with up-to-date information and promotes their engagement in the learning process. It's important to consider student support during the learning process. It's important to determine who will answer their questions and provide assistance if difficulties arise. Online schools often employ tutors for this purpose—specialists who are responsible for organizing the learning process and providing necessary support to students. Properly organized support facilitates more effective learning and increases student satisfaction. The choice of learning format—synchronous, asynchronous, or blended—plays a crucial role in the educational process. However, for most students, interaction with like-minded peers is crucial. Therefore, it's a good idea to create a chat in a convenient messenger or a group on a social network. This will allow students in your course to meet, communicate, provide mutual assistance, and share experiences and insights. Creating such a space not only promotes knowledge sharing but also builds a community, which has a positive impact on the overall learning process and student motivation.

Consider what assistants you will need

If you have developed the course yourself, it is worth considering the possibility of hiring assistants to more effectively organize the learning process. This will help improve the quality of learning and increase student engagement. The right team can significantly facilitate course management and contribute to a more structured and productive learning environment.

The curator plays a key role in the learning process. They inform students about the course features, help with registration on the learning platform, and resolve technical issues. In addition, the curator answers students' questions and keeps them informed about course news. If you plan to sell the course, it is important to consider that the curator can also track registrations and payments, which is an integral part of course management. During the sales stage, you may need a manager to interact with potential clients and help them make a purchasing decision. Properly organizing the work of a tutor and manager significantly increases the chances of successful sales and student satisfaction.

If your course includes independent assignments, it's important to determine the time required for reviewing them in advance and be prepared to allocate this time regularly. It's crucial for students to receive prompt feedback on completed assignments. If the number of students exceeds ten, consider hiring a tutor to review assignments. This tutor should be a specialist with in-depth knowledge of the course area. Clearly define the criteria for assessing assignments and establish the terms of cooperation, including a commitment to provide feedback no later than two days after submission. This approach will not only improve the quality of instruction but also enhance interaction between tutor and students.
