Full title: "Biology in Focus. Natural Sciences Departments of Universities of the Russian Empire (1830-1900)". This work examines the development of the biological sciences in the context of the natural science departments of universities in the Russian Empire from 1830 to 1900. It analyzes key achievements and research trends, as well as the influence of university education on the development of biology as an independent discipline. Particular attention is paid to outstanding scientists, their contributions to the development of science and education, and their interactions with the international scientific community. This work is an important source for studying the history of biology and higher education in Russia and may also be useful to researchers, students, and teachers.

Most universities in the Russian Empire had four main faculties: history and philology, physics and mathematics, law, and medicine. Each of these faculties included various departments, among which the natural sciences department of the physics and mathematics department stood out. The history of this department is the subject of a monograph by Ekaterina Zharova, Doctor of Historical Sciences and Senior Researcher at the St. Petersburg Branch of the Institute for the History of Natural Science and Technology of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The study highlights key aspects of the development of the natural sciences department and its influence on scientific achievements in Russia.

The author provides a comprehensive understanding of the education and teaching system in the 19th century, examining the conditions in which educational and scientific processes took place. The text also analyzes the influence of state policy on university life throughout the century.

The book examines the interaction between representatives of two corporations—professors and students—in the context of the university environment, including classrooms and laboratories. The focus is on organizing the educational and scientific process, as well as identifying interaction mechanisms aimed at answering key questions: how to teach, what to teach, who should teach, what methods to use for teaching, and what kind of students to teach. These questions remain relevant in the modern educational context. "Biology in Focus" is a book written by Ekaterina Zharova that provides an in-depth analysis of key aspects of biology. It examines fundamental concepts, the latest research, and their significance for understanding living organisms and ecosystems. The author strives to make complex scientific topics accessible to a wide audience, emphasizing the importance of biology in the modern world. The book covers a variety of topics, including genetics, ecology, and evolution, allowing readers to understand how biology influences everyday life and the environment. This publication will be useful for both students and anyone interested in the life sciences. The author describes the emergence of the Natural Sciences Department within the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, where such disciplines as biology, chemistry, geology, physics, and mineralogy were studied. It also examines the curriculum development process at various universities and the impact of the 1884 university charter on the organizational structure, which strengthened state control over education.

The second chapter of the book is devoted to the educational process and student life in the imperial era. It examines in detail the university charter of 1804, which obliged professors to combine theory with practice. However, in the first half of the 19th century, students primarily attended lectures and participated only to a limited extent in practical classes. Practical classes included demonstrations of experiments during lectures and excursions, which were conducted by professors at their own discretion. This contrast between theoretical instruction and the lack of practical classes reflects the peculiarities of the educational system of that time.

The following chapters will examine in detail the development of the system of entrance, midterm, and final examinations, as well as issues related to the faculty. Ekaterina Zharova notes that in the first half of the 19th century, there was a significant problem in the teaching of the natural sciences. Professors specialized exclusively in botany or zoology, and only Moscow and St. Petersburg universities had departments covering both fields. In other educational institutions, the quality of teaching natural science left much to be desired. In addition, the author analyzes the difficulties that the first Russian universities faced in the process of creating specialized rooms and laboratories, and considers ways to solve them.

Ekaterina Zharova discusses how government policy to develop universities as research centers was inconsistent and unsystematic. This led to a persistent underfunding of higher education institutions, which negatively impacted their research activities and innovative potential. Ineffective measures to support universities hindered their transformation into modern research centers, which, in turn, limited opportunities for the development of scientific research and the training of qualified specialists.

The book concludes with an overview of the career paths of graduates from the natural sciences and physics and mathematics departments. In this context, the problem associated with the increasing level of specialization at universities is observed. Although the number of students increased, the country did not need as many specialists in the fields of biology, physics, and chemistry. As a result, for most graduates, the only employment option left was actually teaching in a secondary school. This highlights the need to revise educational programs and adapt them to the demands of the modern labor market.

This text will be useful for anyone interested in the history of higher education in Russia.
