Mikhail Shchevlyagin is a lecturer and one of the directors of the Master's program "Designing Educational Experiences," implemented in collaboration between Moscow Pedagogical State University and Skillbox. In his teaching, he focuses on foreign language teaching methods and actively researches personalized learning models, which allows him to effectively adapt the educational process to the needs of each student.
Every month, we observe an increase in the number of courses for methodologists, instructional designers, and educational experience designers. This trend indicates a high demand for these professions. Interest in them is driven by the need to create effective educational programs and innovative approaches to teaching. In a constantly changing educational landscape, specialists in these fields are becoming key players capable of adapting educational processes to modern requirements.
With the growing interest in education, we are seeing an increase in the number of methodologists. Modern people strive to acquire extensive knowledge, which creates a demand for high-quality educational programs and professional methodologists capable of developing them. This circumstance underscores the importance of the role of methodologists in creating effective educational content that meets the needs of students and modern market demands.
Modern education has become age-neutral. Learning is now perceived as a continuous, lifelong process. After graduating from university, people continue to develop by attending courses and refining their skills, allowing them to continually improve their qualifications and adapt to the changing demands of the labor market. This approach to learning promotes personal and professional growth, opening up new opportunities for career advancement and self-improvement.
The lifelong learning approach has become more than just a temporary phenomenon; it is an essential component of modern education and professional development. In a rapidly changing world, where technology and skill requirements are constantly evolving, lifelong learning is becoming a necessity. This concept encompasses not only formal education but also informal learning methods, such as online courses, seminars, and self-study. Lifelong learning facilitates adaptation to new challenges, increased competitiveness in the labor market, and expansion of personal horizons. It's important to understand that continuous learning opens up new opportunities and helps keep your knowledge and skills current.
Absolutely true. To be competitive, you need to constantly evolve. Even a simple pause in development can lead to regression. In a rapidly changing world, it is important to adapt and improve your skills to keep up with trends and stay relevant.

Authentic education is an approach that emphasizes real-world, meaningful learning that fosters critical thinking and independence in students. While preparing for the interview, I noticed that this concept is often discussed in the context of modern educational methods. Authentic education incorporates hands-on learning, project-based learning, and collaboration, allowing students to apply their learning to real-world situations. This approach fosters a deeper understanding of the material and develops the skills needed for successful life and career.
Authentic education can be compared to a personalized approach. This approach emphasizes the student's potential and unique characteristics. Both strengths and weaknesses are considered, as well as the individual's pace of learning. This teaching method promotes a deeper understanding and the development of the skills needed for academic and career success.
The challenge is that time constraints prevent teachers from providing an individualized approach to each student. Personalization and authenticity in the educational process are only possible with the use of digital assistants. The integration of technology into education allows for time optimization and the creation of a more tailored educational environment where each student receives the necessary resources and support. This promotes deeper learning and improves the overall effectiveness of the learning process.
Digital assistants are programs and technologies that use artificial intelligence to perform various tasks, making users' daily lives easier. They can answer questions, manage schedules, help find information, and perform many other functions. Digital assistants such as Siri, Google Assistant, and Alexa are becoming increasingly popular due to their ability to adapt to user needs and provide a high level of convenience. These technologies are actively developing, and their application covers a wide range of areas, including business, education, and home needs. The use of digital assistants allows you to optimize time and increase productivity, making them an important tool in the modern world.
Personalized learning platforms are becoming increasingly popular. One striking example is Summit Learning, actively used in the United States. This free resource allows you to create an individual curriculum for each student, as well as provide them with personalized support. Such platforms help tailor the educational process to the unique needs and abilities of each student, which contributes to more effective learning and development.
Adaptive platforms exist that instantly analyze student responses and create customized learning paths based on their goals and objectives. If a student prefers visual content, they will be provided with diagrams, images, and videos, significantly enhancing their understanding of the material and promoting more effective learning.
A flipped classroom is an innovative teaching method that challenges the traditional teaching model. In this approach, students first study new material independently, often with the help of video tutorials or other digital resources, and then discuss and consolidate their knowledge with the instructor in class. This allows for more efficient use of class time, focusing more on interaction and hands-on assignments. This approach promotes active student engagement in the learning process and the development of critical thinking, as well as improves material retention. The flipped classroom is widely used in various educational institutions and is becoming increasingly popular among teachers.
The flipped classroom model transforms the traditional approach to learning, shifting the process of acquiring new information to home learning and practicing knowledge in the classroom. Students study theoretical material independently, and in class, they apply their acquired knowledge through examples and assignments. This approach promotes a deeper understanding of the material and active student engagement in the learning process. The Flipped Classroom allows teachers to focus on individualized student support and create a more interactive and productive learning environment.

Reading dozens of pages of theoretical material at home can be difficult for many people. It requires significant effort and concentration, which is not always possible in today's realities. Alternative teaching methods, such as using practical examples or interactive materials, can significantly facilitate the process of assimilation of information. Effective ways to learn theory can include audio lessons, video lessons, or group discussions, making learning more accessible and engaging.
Material can be presented not only in text format, but also in video form. This allows for a more varied delivery method and makes information more accessible to a wider audience. Video can be particularly effective for demonstrating complex concepts or practical skills, as visual perception often facilitates understanding. Using a variety of content formats also helps improve SEO, as a variety of materials can increase the time users spend on a website and enhance its appeal.
I conducted an experiment in which I recorded ten-minute video lectures for my students. They were able to watch these lectures at home and complete short assignments to test their understanding of the material. In class, we emphasized the practical application of theory, using examples and discussing complex aspects. This approach significantly improved retention and contributed to a deeper understanding of the topic.
I strongly support the learning by doing approach. A teacher's words may be quickly forgotten, but personal experience remains in memory for a long time. Practical application of knowledge not only deepens understanding of the material, but also forms skills that become the basis for future professional growth.

About student motivation, soft skills and reflection
In many Articles on modern educational design echo the assertion: "Learning shouldn't be painful." This statement implies that the learning process should be comfortable and engaging for students. Painful learning can lead to rejection and reduce student motivation. Instead, it's necessary to create an environment where students feel supported, engaged, and have the opportunity for self-expression. It's important that educational methods promote not only knowledge acquisition but also the development of critical thinking, creativity, and self-confidence. Thus, learning becomes not only effective but also a positive experience that inspires further development. I completely agree with this opinion. The era when students were forced to study unbearably is a thing of the past. The educational process should be interesting and inspiring. Only positive emotions and engaging tasks contribute to the systematization of knowledge and its effective acquisition. Creating a comfortable and motivating learning environment is a key factor in the learning process.
The gamification method effectively solves two key problems: it makes it easier for teachers to explain material and promotes student engagement in the learning process. Using game elements in teaching makes learning more interesting and interactive, which increases motivation and improves knowledge acquisition. Gamification helps create an active learning environment where students feel more engaged and interested in the learning process.
Working with student motivation requires a comprehensive approach. It is important to recognize the significance of both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation, based on interest and passion for the subject, promotes deep learning. Extrinsic motivation, associated with grades and recognition, also plays a role, as it can encourage students to achieve certain goals.
Striving for a balance between these two types of motivation can significantly improve the overall effectiveness of learning. For example, by creating conditions for self-expression and developing interests, teachers can support intrinsic motivation. At the same time, using reward and recognition systems helps students see tangible results of their efforts.
Thus, by combining intrinsic and extrinsic sources of motivation, it is possible to create a more productive educational environment conducive to successful learning and student development.
The ideal scenario is when extrinsic and intrinsic motivation interact harmoniously, creating a powerful incentive for learning. However, more often than not, one of these motivations predominates. It is important for the instructor to support the student in all circumstances, helping them overcome difficulties and achieve their goals. Effective support can significantly increase the student's level of engagement and success.
If the student has an intrinsic motivation to study a topic, it is important to help them consolidate and develop this interest. To do this, you can suggest setting a long-term goal that will serve as a guide and source of inspiration throughout the learning process.
If the student is influenced only by extrinsic motivations, it is important to emphasize the benefits they receive from successful studies, including financial benefits. Extrinsic motivation can be just as effective as intrinsic motivation, serving as a powerful motivator for high achievement. Students who recognize that a quality education opens doors to greater career opportunities and increased income may feel an additional boost to their studies. Understanding these benefits helps foster lasting motivation and a desire for academic success.

An instructional designer needs certain soft skills that facilitate effective learning and interaction with students. Firstly, critical thinking allows you to analyze and evaluate information, which is important for the development of high-quality educational materials. Secondly, communication skills help to effectively convey knowledge and establish contact with the audience. Empathy plays a key role in understanding learners' needs and creating an inclusive learning environment. Teamwork skills are also essential, as instructional designers often collaborate with other professionals. Flexibility and adaptability allow them to quickly respond to changing educational processes and requirements. Finally, the ability to self-learn helps them stay current with the latest trends in instructional design and learning technologies. All of these skills contribute to the successful implementation of educational projects and improve the quality of learning. Creativity in teaching is a priority for me. It is important to create an educational process that is not only useful but also engaging for students. This approach promotes better absorption of the material and increases interest in learning. Effective teaching methods based on creativity make classes more dynamic and interesting. Future instructional designers and teachers need cooperation and collaboration skills. In the modern educational process, it is important not only to impart knowledge but also to create conditions for active student participation. Instead of remaining in the spotlight and simply narrating material, educators should adopt the role of observer and facilitator, allowing students to explore and interact with one another. This approach promotes the development of critical thinking and teamwork skills, which are key to modern learning.
Digital literacy is becoming an integral part of modern society, encompassing not only education but all aspects of life. In the context of digitalization, educators and students are required to effectively use online resources and tools. Mastering digital skills facilitates a deeper understanding of information and improves the quality of the educational process. Therefore, it is important to develop digital literacy at all levels to be competitive in a rapidly changing world.
In recent years, there has been a significant increase in interest in soft skills, and many are wondering whether they are overvalued. These skills, such as communication, teamwork, and emotional intelligence, are becoming increasingly important in the modern world. Success in career and personal life often depends on the ability to interact with people and adapt to change. Therefore, despite some skepticism, it can be argued that soft skills play a key role in professional development and overall effectiveness. Soft skills play a vital role in adapting to new situations, allowing you to step outside your comfort zone and behave confidently. These skills, such as communication, emotional intelligence, and critical thinking, help you interact effectively with others and overcome challenges. Developing soft skills promotes personal growth and improves professional capabilities, making them an integral part of a successful career. Transferable skills are abilities and qualities that are independent of a specific specialty and can be applied across various fields. They include both soft and hard skills, as well as personal characteristics that make a person a more versatile specialist. Having such skills allows you to easily adapt to new work conditions and effectively interact with colleagues in any field. Including transferable skills in your resume or portfolio can significantly improve your chances of successful employment and career advancement. Reflection is truly an important skill. It allows people to analyze their thoughts, actions, and emotions, which promotes personal growth and development. Reflection helps them better understand their strengths and weaknesses and learn from life experiences. This process of self-discovery contributes to improved decision-making skills and increases emotional intelligence. Developing reflective skills can significantly impact professional performance, as it allows them to more effectively manage tasks and interact with others. Reflection plays a key role in consolidating experiences in our minds. It allows us to more deeply comprehend events, analyze our feelings, and analyze our conclusions. This is an important process that promotes personal development and a better understanding of ourselves. Reflection not only helps us understand the path we've taken but also learn valuable lessons from each experience.
Kolb's model emphasizes the importance of the reflection stage, which precedes new experiences. By applying reflection, we can more deeply comprehend and analyze information, which in turn allows us to make more informed decisions and continue the learning process. Understanding this model helps to better organize the educational process and use the acquired knowledge for further development.

Encouraging a student to reflect can be a challenging task. It's important to create a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable expressing their thoughts and feelings. Use questions that encourage self-reflection, such as asking students to evaluate their successes and failures. Introducing group discussions can also aid this process, as sharing opinions with peers encourages deeper reflection on their own experiences. Regular written reflection assignments can be helpful, as they give students the opportunity not only to reflect on their experiences but also to structure their thoughts. Using various assessment methods, such as portfolios, can also inspire students to think more actively about their own learning and development. To effectively discuss a lesson with a child, simply ask guiding questions such as, "How did the lesson go?", "What did you find difficult?", and "What did you like?" It's important not only to ask these questions but also to discuss the answers with the child. It's recommended to develop a habit of asking such questions and set aside a few minutes at the end of each lesson for such a conversation. This will help the child better understand the material and develop self-reflection skills.
Reflection plays a key role in my professional work. It allows me to analyze my own actions and comprehend my experiences. This process helps me identify strengths and weaknesses and identify areas for improvement. By regularly practicing reflection, I can adapt my approaches to work, which contributes to increased efficiency and professional growth. Recognizing my own successes and mistakes not only deepens my understanding of the profession but also improves interactions with colleagues and clients. Reflection becomes an important tool for achieving high results and developing in my chosen field.
Like my students, I don't always get it right the first time. I realize that even unsuccessful experiences are valuable, and I strive to learn from them. Every step, even if unsuccessful, helps in further development and understanding.
Reflection is a key element of my professional growth. I analyze my experiences and identify areas for improvement in my teaching practice and methodological approaches. This process allows me to find solutions that enhance the quality of teaching. The results of my work confirm that reflection really helps me achieve my goals and improve as a teacher.

Why you can't listen to a lecture on the couch and other features of distance learning
Mikhail, Tell us how you became a teacher and methodologist. What inspired you to choose this profession?
From the tenth grade, I was sure of my choice to become a teacher. This decision became the foundation of my professional career. During my undergraduate degree, I delved into the methodological aspects of teaching, actively studying articles and books on this topic. After successfully completing my studies, I passed international exams in teaching foreign languages and continued developing in the field of teacher education in my master's degree.
I gradually transitioned to the status of a teacher, and then became a methodologist. For me, there are no strict boundaries or clear titles. I consider myself, first and foremost, a teacher, and roles such as methodologist and educational designer are merely additional skills and advantages in my professional work.
You work at Moscow State Pedagogical University, specifically in its new educational division – the Institute of International Education. This institute is distinguished by its modern approach to education, an emphasis on international standards, and the integration of current educational practices. We offer unique programs that prepare students for work in a globalized world, providing them with the necessary knowledge and skills for successful careers in the international arena.
We offer programs for future teachers that integrate various academic fields. Our bachelor's degree programs include two training profiles, such as "English" combined with "Economics" or "Information Technology in Education." Classic combinations, such as "English" and "French," are also available. These interdisciplinary programs help improve graduates' competitiveness in the labor market.
Over the past year, educational institutions, including universities and schools, have faced significant challenges due to the pandemic, leading to a drastic transition to distance learning. This required rapid adaptation by both faculty and students. Despite the difficulties, many educational institutions have been able to identify the positive aspects of the remote format.
Firstly, distance learning has provided greater flexibility in the schedule, allowing students and schoolchildren to independently manage their time. Secondly, the use of modern technology has made the learning process more interactive and accessible. Thirdly, many now have the opportunity to study from anywhere in the world, which has expanded access to educational resources. Effective use of digital tools has also contributed to the development of students' skills necessary for a modern digital society.
Thus, despite the difficulties, distance learning has opened up new horizons for the educational process and allowed us to rethink traditional approaches to teaching.
During the lockdown, I actively researched how students perceive distance learning. The main advantage that everyone mentioned was the significant time savings. Students simply open their laptops and instantly engage in the learning process, without having to spend hours commuting from home to university, which in Moscow and the suburbs can take up to three hours. This allows them to focus on their studies and increase productivity, which is an important aspect of the modern educational process.
Teachers have had no trouble adapting to the new conditions. We have previously used digital formats for sending assignments to students. The main change is that instead of seeing students at their desks, we now interact with them through computer screens. This transition to online learning has opened up new possibilities for the educational process and allowed us to use modern technology for more effective teaching.
One of the main disadvantages of distance learning is the lack of personal interaction between the teacher and students. This can lead to decreased motivation and difficulties in understanding the material. Also, the lack of lively discussions and group activities can limit the opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences. Furthermore, technical problems and problems with internet access can negatively impact the learning process. Some students may have difficulty organizing themselves and managing their time in a self-paced environment. Finally, distance learning may not provide sufficient practical training, which is especially important in professions that require practical skills.
The main disadvantage of distance learning is high student fatigue. Online learning requires prolonged periods of time spent in front of a screen, which makes it difficult to concentrate and absorb information. Many students report that they can't retain the material by the end of the day because the lack of social interaction and physical activity negatively impacts their concentration and motivation. Many students struggle with poor self-organization, especially when there are distractions, such as a couch next to their workstation. It's difficult to focus on tasks when the temptation to lie down and relax is so great. This can negatively impact productivity and work efficiency. To improve concentration, it's important to create a comfortable and organized workspace where distractions are minimized. A properly organized workspace improves focus and helps prevent slack. Sounds really appealing. How did you help your students concentrate and avoid the temptation to relax on the couch? I always insisted that students turn on their video cameras during class. This isn't a controlling measure, but a way to maintain eye contact, which significantly improves interaction. We also established a rule of strictly adhering to the schedule. If a class is scheduled for 10:40, we start at that time, and being late is not tolerated. This approach promotes more effective learning and fosters an atmosphere of accountability.
The pandemic proved challenging for everyone, including students who were experiencing fatigue from constantly communicating through screens. At the end of this period, we decided to spice up our classes and added fun moments by showing each other pets. This helped create a warmer atmosphere, reminding us of the importance of face-to-face communication and interaction. Moments like these bring us closer together and give us confidence that, despite the difficulties, we can find joy in simple things.
