According to the study, more than half of the online higher education market (65%) is made up of programs developed by universities in collaboration with EdTech companies. The online master's program in Data Science, launched by Skillfactory in partnership with NUST MISIS in 2020, became a pioneer in this area. Since then, revenue from such programs has increased 18-fold: from 34.8 million rubles in 2020 to 631 million rubles in 2023. This demonstrates growing interest in online education and the demand for programs that combine academic knowledge with practical experience in high technology.

In 2023, 85% of students chose distance learning master's programs, while 15% chose bachelor's degrees. The growing popularity of online master's programs is explained by the characteristics of the target audience. These are primarily adults seeking to combine study with work. Many of them are already experienced professionals, and their main goal is to expand their professional skills and move into related fields. The online Master's degree program offers flexibility and the opportunity to tailor the learning process to individual needs, making it attractive to working students.

In 2023, HSE University became the leader in the number of online first-year students among Russian universities, due to the launch of its online campus last year. ITMO University took second place, and MIPT came in third. Among EdTech companies, Skillfactory took first place, with Skillbox and Netology also in the top three. Thus, according to HSE University, in 2023, residents of 66 regions of the Russian Federation and 11 countries around the world joined the online campus, including China, the USA, Peru, Haiti, Mexico, Moldova, Greece, and Turkey.
  • Practical teachers. Distance higher education programs are taught not only by academic teachers from science, but also by practicing experts. EdTech companies have greater opportunities than universities to hire such specialists and compensate them adequately.

The reasons for this phenomenon can be varied, including changes in students' life circumstances or dropouts due to insufficient academic performance. However, an important factor is that successful mastery of online programs, especially in higher education, requires high motivation and self-regulation skills. The ability to effectively organize and control your own learning process is key, and, unfortunately, not all adult students have developed these skills.

Based on our analysis, the main factors affecting learning quality include: lack of student self-organization, time management difficulties, lack of personal motivation, and problems accessing necessary resources and technology. These aspects can significantly reduce learning outcomes and overall satisfaction with learning.

  • Difficulty maintaining academic discipline. There is a stereotype that online programs imply a lack of strict academic discipline and progress monitoring. This is not true. The requirements for students are no different from those in the traditional offline format. Online higher education programs have strict deadlines that prevent students from skipping the entire semester and motivate them to complete assignments on time. Failing students are usually expelled during the first year of study.
  • Inability to manage time. Effectively studying online requires strong time management skills. Putting off tasks until the last day will not work. You will have to either learn to plan your study load or choose a different learning format.
  • Lack of real learning goals. While this type of supervision helps some students engage with the learning process, others still fall off track.

However, even with the support of coordinators, it's important to recognize that self-motivation and self-organization play a key role in successful learning.
