What's special about Heroes 3?

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 is a game that perfectly combines all the elements to create a true masterpiece. Deep tactical gameplay allows players to develop strategies and make informed decisions in battle. Charming graphics that have stood the test of time bring atmosphere to every battle and exploration. Memorable epic music sets the mood, immersing players in a fantasy world. This game has become a classic and continues to inspire a new generation of gamers.

The player controls one of the unique factions, each with special characteristics. They explore the global map, level up their hero, collect resources and form an army, recruiting various creatures. As the game progresses, the player learns spells, improves their city and attracts new heroes, creating effective logistics chains. He also searches for artifacts, captures castles, and participates in battles that feature a deep and well-thought-out combat system.

The game still looks great. As they say, it aged well. Screenshot: Heroes of Might and Magic 3 / New World Computing.

The game is a turn-based strategy, which allows players to take their time, especially if they are playing alone rather than in multiplayer. Even those who are not avid gamers are attracted to Heroes 3. You may have repeatedly observed guards enjoying Heroes at their posts. Perhaps this is due to the meditative nature of the game: you leisurely explore the map, find valuable items, gather an army, develop characters, and participate in battles. All this action is accompanied by magnificent music, which adds atmosphere and immerses you in the gameplay.

The game is a complex and multifaceted process that requires strategic thinking and a careful approach. To succeed, you must construct buildings in a specific sequence, carefully manage your economy, and systematically organize the recruitment and delivery of armies to the borders of the explored map. New creatures appear in the city every week, and one turn corresponds to one day. Creating optimal hero builds and selecting useful artifacts is crucial, significantly impacting gameplay efficiency. Success in this game depends on the ability to combine all these elements and adapt to changing conditions.

Competing against the computer is one thing, but multiplayer mode is a completely different experience. It's important to note that this isn't just about online play: Heroes of Might and Magic 3 (HoMM3) also works great in local co-op. You can play over a LAN network or in hotseat mode on a single computer, where you and your friends take turns sharing a chair. Powerful hardware isn't required—any computer configuration is sufficient, and the gameplay is bound to be enjoyable. Multiplayer in HoMM3 allows you to enjoy the strategy in the company of friends, which makes the gameplay even more exciting and interesting.

The popularity of Heroes 3 is largely due to its low system requirements. The game launched successfully and ran stably on most computers, making it accessible to a wide audience, especially in Russia and the former Soviet Union. This contributed to its growth in popularity and allowed many players to enjoy a unique gaming experience without the need to upgrade their hardware.

The community has played a key role in maintaining the game's popularity over the years. Fans create new maps, actively modernize content, and release full-fledged expansions. One of the significant expansions is Horn of the Abyss, which introduces two new factions with unique units and features, and also offers new scenarios and campaigns. This expansion continues to develop and receive updates, which fuels player interest and maintains an active community around the game.

Who is making Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era

The game is being developed by the independent studio Unfrozen, founded in St. Petersburg in 2016. Today, the company has offices in Cyprus, Belgrade, and Tashkent. In 2024, Unfrozen significantly increased its staff to 50 employees, which demonstrates the growth and development of the studio.

Unfrozen, known for its highly acclaimed projects, presented the tactical game Iratus: Lord of the Dead, which is made in the style of Darkest Dungeon. Players have positively rated this game, which confirms its success in the market. Unfrozen Studios is comprised of seasoned professionals with experience working on titles such as League of Legends, World of Warcraft, Disco Elysium, and Disciples 3. This allows the team to bring deep gameplay and a unique development approach to their games, making them appealing to a wide audience. Alexandra Golubeva, known online under the pseudonym Alfina, spent three years developing the narrative for the new Heroes. After completing the project, she returned to Ice-Pick Lodge, where she continued working on Pathologic 3. Thanks to her efforts, the project was successfully pitched to publisher Ubisoft.

The studio developing Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era, Ubisoft states that the project is being developed "by fans, for fans." For Ubisoft, this is a great way to reboot a popular franchise. The development team includes professional esports players who play Heroes of Might and Magic III at a high level. Perhaps this is what influences the emphasis the authors place on esports elements in their devlogs, emphasizing the importance of the competitive aspect of the game.

We are confident that the new game in the Heroes of Might and Magic series should, first and foremost, convey the atmosphere of the classic "Heroes." Our team focuses on the original perception of the game to create a product that will take players back to their favorite moments from the past. Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era Plot

Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era is a prequel to the entire series. It is important to note that after the rights to HoMM were transferred to Ubisoft, a new world of Ashan was created, where the events of the fifth, sixth and seventh parts took place. Olden Era returns us to the original universe in which the events of the first four games take place. This new game immerses players in the original world of Might & Magic: Magic, offering a unique experience and familiar elements that have made the series iconic.

This is a science fiction work. It describes a highly advanced race of Ancients who sent colonists on starships controlled by artificial intelligence to various planets. One of these planets is Enroth, known as the setting for the M&M and Heroes games from the first to third installments, as well as the Olden Era. Over time, the colony on Enroth began to deteriorate, and its inhabitants began to perceive scientific phenomena as magical.

Screenshot: Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era game / Unfrozen

The Kreegans are one of the main opponents of the Ancients in the Heroes of Might and Magic world. This race of demon-like creatures travels through space on asteroid ships and is known as the inhabitants of Castle Inferno. Unlike ordinary demons, the Kreegans possess unique characteristics and abilities that make them formidable opponents. Their complex culture and military strategies make them an important part of the HoMM universe.

Following the cataclysmic events of Heroes of Might and Magic III, the world of Enroth was destroyed by a cosmic cataclysm. Those who survived, thanks to the help of the Ancients, resettled in a new world—Axeoth. It is in this new setting that the events of the fourth game unfold, where players can explore uncharted lands, discover new opportunities, and face a variety of challenges.

The events of the game Olden Era take place in the world of Enroth, but on a different continent – Jadame. This continent was previously the scene of the game Might and Magic 8: Day of the Destroyer, but was not featured in the Heroes series. Olden Era opens new horizons, exploring uncharted territories and giving players the opportunity to immerse themselves in the unique atmosphere of Jadame.

Fans of the Heroes of Might and Magic series may be surprised by the absence of the Inferno faction from the list of available factions. However, this is explained by the fact that the events of the Olden Era take place hundreds of years before this faction appeared on Enroth. At present, there is no mention of the Kreegans ever being on Jadame. To this end, the developers created a new faction that, while sharing some similarities with Inferno, represents a unique castle. It's based on the primitive tribes of semi-intelligent wasps mentioned in Might and Magic 8, and is called the Hive. This replacement allows us to maintain interest in the game and develop its storylines, offering players new opportunities and acquaintance with the original characters.

Hive. It looks quite infernal. Screenshot: Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era / Unfrozen.

The Swarm does indeed have a lot in common with the Inferno, in particular, the Kreegans are also organized according to the hive principle. Moreover, in the game Might and Magic 6, the Demon Queen created a hive. This raises interesting speculations about how the new faction may influence the development of the plot. Perhaps its unique traits and connections with other factions will open up new horizons in gameplay.

In the plot of the work, the authors use the technique of an unreliable narrator, which allows for the creation of a multi-layered narrative. Different factions interpret the structure of the world in their own way, and each of them considers their worldview to be correct. This approach forces the reader to consider what is true. What are the boundaries of truth in the context of personal beliefs and perceptions?

All creature descriptions in the bestiary are created by a character who exists in the game world—a scientist. He strives for objectivity, but cannot resist commenting on aspects of other cultures that raise his questions. This can lead to errors in judgment.

A game's devlog is an important tool for developing and promoting a video game. In this blog, developers share their experiences, describe the creation process, and discuss the challenges and achievements at each stage. The devlog helps establish a connection with the audience, allowing players to monitor progress and make suggestions. This creates a community interested in the project, which can positively impact its popularity. Regular updates and detailed descriptions of development stages help build anticipation and interest in the final product. It's important that the devlog be informative, honest, and reflective of the project's current state, which will help build player trust and increase the chances of a successful release.

In devlogs and Q&As, the authors mention that familiar characters or their ancestors may appear in the game. However, the primary focus will be on new characters and their stories. Therefore, it's expected that connections between the events of previous games and the new plots will not be strongly emphasized. This allows the authors to focus on developing unique characters and their adventures, which can attract both old and new players.

The current version of the game features six factions, all of which will be available in Early Access. However, the sixth faction remains a secret for now. It is unlikely to be a completely new faction, otherwise the developers would not have created such intrigue around it. It is possible that this is the Dock, which was added to the third part thanks to the fan-made Horn of the Abyss add-on, inspired by the popularity of the pirate theme in Jadame. It is also possible that this could be the Forge. We will soon learn the truth.

The legendary Forge, conceived by the developers of HoMM3 for the Armageddon's Blade add-on, was originally supposed to be a high-tech factory with skyscrapers and generators. This faction was planned to feature creatures such as cyberzombies and dreadnoughts, and the hero classes were supposed to include a cyborg and a mechanic. However, some Heroes fans expressed dissatisfaction with the introduction of a technological faction, preferring a classic fantasy atmosphere, which led to the removal of the Forge from the game. In the Olden Era project, the situation is more complex: the developers are aware of the disagreements among fans – some want to see elements of techno-fantasy, while others are against it. However, they are not revealing whose side they are on, leaving fans in suspense.

Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era Gameplay

Olden Era gameplay remains true to the classic traditions of the Heroes series, while introducing fresh elements. This harmonious blend of old and new mechanics maintains balance, allowing players to enjoy familiar gameplay while experiencing something new. Olden Era offers engaging strategies and tactics that appeal to both veterans and newcomers to the world of Heroes.

The factions are a combination of classic "castle" settings such as the Temple, Necropolis, and some Dungeon content, with new concepts including the Swarm and Sylvans, as well as a sixth, as yet undisclosed faction. The graphics are rendered in full 3D while maintaining a familiar perspective. The story takes place in the unique world of Enroth, and the explorable continent of Jadame has previously been partially featured only in the Might and Magic RPG series, but not in Heroes. This gives us significant creative freedom to create engaging gameplay content.

The strategic map displays a variety of approaches. For example, elements such as Knowledge Stones and Dragon Utopias clearly reference classic parts of the series, evoking nostalgia among fans. At the same time, there are also completely new structures, distinguished by both design and functionality, adding uniqueness and freshness to the gameplay. This combination of old and new makes the strategic map more interesting and multifaceted, attracting both veterans and new players.

Our main goal is to remain faithful to the classic ideas and imagery, while carefully improving and introducing new elements into the game, which allows it to remain relevant and feel modern.

We are actively working to create fascinating characters and a gripping storyline that will allow players to immerse themselves in the world of our game. We are also testing game mechanics to ensure they work smoothly and are enjoyable.

In the coming updates, we plan to add new levels and customization options. We value community feedback and are actively incorporating it into the development process. Stay tuned for important announcements and details on the project's progress. Your opinion matters to us, and we're ready to listen.

In Heroes 3, the initial party cities had similar stats, with the exception of Necropolis, which had the unique ability to replenish its army with the skeletons of defeated enemies. In Olden Era, each faction has its own unique abilities. For example, the Dungeon faction has the "Power of the Triumvirate" ability, which allows the hero to activate one of three stances once per round. These stances provide various stat bonuses, adding strategic depth to the gameplay.

Necromancers in the new game have undergone some changes compared to the previous installment. They can now only resurrect creatures already in their army. This means that the strategy of amassing an army of peasants and getting vampires in the first week will no longer work. As Unfrozen notes, the number of creatures revived will depend on the total health of killed enemies, which adds an element of strategy and requires a more thoughtful approach to combat.

Visually, the game Stylized, which not everyone liked. Screenshot: Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era / Unfrozen game.

Faction units offer players two types of upgrades, reminiscent of the system from the fifth part of "Heroes." The choice between upgrades is not final, as players can develop their units while maintaining access to both options. For example, a regular skeleton can be transformed into a skeleton warrior or a skeleton archer, providing a variety of strategies. Vampires can also be upgraded into ranged units that not only deal damage but also restore health, which adds elements of balance to the game. Each upgrade has unique characteristics, which opens up wide possibilities for building builds and a tactical approach in battles.

Creatures have both passive and active skills that require concentration. These charges accumulate during combat. When choosing the Sylvan faction, players can increase the number of charges or improve their abilities. Therefore, playing as the Sylvan will focus on using creature abilities, opening up new strategic possibilities in battle.

There is a creature called a Dusk Hoplet, which, upon death, increases the power of the hero's spells. If your army allows it, you can dedicate one of these creatures to a separate squad and send it to its death. This is a strategic move that will bring significant advantages in battle.

When creating Sylvan (also called the Grove in the devlogs), the authors were guided by the city of the Sorceresses from Heroes 2"Screenshot: Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era / Unfrozen

The game features many unique abilities. In the city of Sylvan, the army consists of creatures of various elements, which can use Awakening to improve their stats and unlock new skills. Ghosts of the Necropolis have the ability to frighten opponents, forcing them to move to adjacent cells, and Tomb Raiders can summon friendly creatures to support them in battle. These mechanics add depth to strategic gameplay and allow players to develop various tactics to achieve victory.

Troglodytes in Olden Era have the unique ability to spit acid, making them dangerous opponents. Scouts, similar to the harpies from the third game, have an upgrade that prevents the enemy from counterattacking and are also able to deal damage through armor. These mechanics create many tactical possibilities and add variety to the gameplay. In Olden Era, players will be able to develop a variety of strategies, promising a captivating and multi-layered experience.

Heroes have unique abilities. For example, Eith from the city of Silvan suffers no movement penalties when traversing difficult terrain, making him an excellent choice for exploring difficult areas. Mreova has the ability to create free crystals and increase their supply when collected, allowing for efficient resource accumulation. The game also features a spellbook, and the new addition of subskills gives players the ability to more flexibly customize their builds, expanding the game's strategic possibilities.

The spellbook now functions differently: the developers aimed to reduce the element of randomness. If you're missing a certain spell, you can obtain it, though the process can be quite involved.

Screenshot: Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era game / Unfrozen

The game will feature Grails that can be built in cities, but the mechanics for finding them will be different from those in Heroes 3. The developers are striving to give players a more active way to build Grails, but are not yet revealing all the details of this mechanic.

Unfrozen combines all the best elements of the previous parts, carefully taking into account community feedback and fan opinions. At the same time, the developers have also introduced their own unique ideas, doing so carefully to preserve the harmony of existing mechanics. In their developer diaries, the studio emphasizes the importance of maintaining balance, which demonstrates their careful approach to improving the gameplay.

Finding a unique winning build is still possible, but it does not guarantee automatic victory. The balance in single-player and multiplayer games can differ significantly. The developers plan to carefully monitor player actions and make necessary adjustments to the game to maintain fairness and interest in the gameplay.

Screenshot: game Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era / Unfrozen

For those who prefer to play against the computer, the developers promise artificial intelligence based on the behavior of real players. The developers studied this aspect and consulted with professional eSports athletes. The artificial intelligence will assign heroes to roles, similar to how players do. The main character will fight opponents, while the other characters will gather resources and provide the army with artifacts. This approach will create a more realistic and immersive gaming experience.

The artificial intelligence is capable of employing a variety of strategies and adapting them depending on the current situation. For example, after collecting all the elements on its section of the map to a set percentage, it can change its strategy to expand and begin capturing an adjacent section. The developers emphasize the importance of this flexibility in the AI's strategic approach, allowing it to effectively respond to changes in gameplay and achieve its goals.

The game's music is of a high standard thanks to two outstanding composers - Paul Romero, an iconic figure in the series, and Cris Velasco, known for his contributions to games such as God of War, StarCraft 2, Borderlands, Bloodborne, and Mass Effect. The musical accompaniment is performed by the talented Heroes Orchestra, which emphasizes the quality of the sound design and creates an unforgettable atmosphere of the gameplay.

Multiplayer and Map Generator

The multiplayer features three unique game modes. The first mode is classic, which completely replicates the elements of the single-player campaign: you build a castle, collect resources, recruit heroes, organize logistics, and manage the economy. The second mode is called "Single Hero," in which you have only one hero, which requires a special strategic approach. The third mode is "Arena," ideal for beginners. In this mode, you choose a hero and an army and battle opponents, allowing you to quickly master the basics of the game and develop your combat skills. These modes provide gameplay variety and the opportunity for every player to find a suitable playstyle.

Each game mode will have a unique ranking system and leagues of varying levels. Convenient matchmaking is provided: just press a few buttons and you'll be in the game. A draft system is also implemented, in which you and your opponent take turns removing cards from the general pool, battling with the last remaining one. The faction selection works similarly, adding an element of strategy and variety to the gameplay.

Screenshot: Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era game / Unfrozen

Olden Era's online gameplay features a simultaneous turn mode, eliminating long waits for other players to perform their actions. Players can disable this feature if desired, allowing for greater flexibility in gameplay.

Unfrozen offers a high degree of customization for players. The random map generator (RMG) has become a key element of the project since its development. The game features both classic map templates from Heroes 3 and unique new ones created based on community feedback. This allows players to enjoy a variety of gameplay and adapt it to their preferences.

The flexibility of our generator's design is a key aspect of its functionality. When choosing between two ways to operate a certain feature, we often decide to create a customizable toggle. This allows the user to tailor the gameplay to their preferences. For example, a template can easily customize victory conditions on a map, allow the player to recruit new heroes, or control the spawn of certain items. We're confident that such extensive customization options will make our network map generator (NMG) useful not only for multiplayer but also for single-player play. Furthermore, our generator can create maps of various sizes, including those not supported by the game.

The game devlog is an important development element that allows the team to share information about the game's development process. In this blog, developers can describe ideas, share achievements, discuss problems, and find solutions. The devlog not only helps the team maintain focus on the project's goals but also builds a community around the game, allowing players to follow its progress and make suggestions. Publishing regular updates in the devlog helps generate interest and anticipation among future players. It's also a great way to showcase the game's unique features and attract attention across multiple platforms. Keeping a devlog helps establish transparency in the development process and builds trust between developers and players, which can ultimately lead to a successful launch and popularity of the game.

Unfrozen is aimed at esports, which formed the basis of the game's promotional campaign from the developers. The creators organized a series of interviews with professional players on YouTube to collect feedback. Constant consultations with esports athletes helped the studio optimize map design and select successful mechanics from previous projects. This approach contributes to the creation of a higher-quality gaming experience that meets the expectations of professional gamers and tournament spectators.

The problem with professional Heroes 3 tournaments is that over the course of the game's existence, established winning strategies have developed, which are actively used by players. The developers of Olden Era strive to ensure their game takes its rightful place in esports, and to this end, they have implemented a variety of strategies that ensure a balance between them. An important aspect of this process were the new mechanics for interaction with external housing and city skills. In addition, collecting detailed statistics allows the developers to quickly identify and eliminate imbalances, which helps improve the gaming experience and increase player interest.

Olden Era will be available in Early Access with six factions. This may become the final release, but the developers want to observe gameplay and how users use the editor. The team plans to actively engage with the community, which will allow them to take into account player opinions and possibly include successful fan developments in the final version of the game.

The developers are actively considering the opinions of the gaming community. For example, players noticed the absence of bone dragons in the presented videos and expressed dissatisfaction about this. As a result, the game developers decided to satisfy fan requests and added these creatures to the project.

Release Date

Olden Era plans to enter Early Access in the second quarter of 2025. The developers promise to provide a detailed roadmap that will include improvements and updates over the next year. The full release of the game is expected to take place around the second quarter of 2026.

Unfrozen does not intend to abandon the game after its release and plans to actively support and develop the project. Mod support is expected to become available after the full release of the game, which will provide players with additional options for customization and improving the gameplay.

The game's system requirements have not yet been announced, but the choice of a slightly cartoonish style is not accidental. This decision ensures good performance even on devices with low specifications. The developers strive to make the game accessible to a wide audience, which increases its appeal and allows more players to enjoy the gameplay.

If you want to learn more about the gameplay mechanics and story, we recommend visiting the developers' YouTube channel and the game's Steam page. Unfrozen actively shares videos and development diaries, allowing you to immerse yourself in the game's world and learn about its features.
