Respawns

The decision to make the Modern Warfare series more accessible to newcomers led not only to a controversial level of design but also to a change in the respawn logic. After a character's death, the algorithm selected the safest respawn point, farthest from enemies, which significantly reduced the likelihood of immediate death. The number of such points was strictly limited, which contributed to a logical gameplay dynamic: players spawned in safety and could focus on capturing key positions. Combined with the laconic map design, this ensured a fairly tactical gameplay, allowing experienced players to analyze the situation and take advantage of the advantages of their classes. This approach contributed to a more strategic environment, where each team could effectively collaborate and plan their actions.

In MW, respawns operate differently. The algorithm aims to respawn players close to their allies, making battles less predictable and sometimes leading to unexpected situations. Instead of encountering a single enemy around a corner, a player might encounter an entire team. This mechanism negatively impacts the tactical aspect of the game, as it is now impossible to confidently control certain areas of the map. Enemies can appear in the most unexpected places, which requires players to be more flexible and adaptable in their actions.

Weapon Upgrades

The updated weapon upgrade system in Call of Duty has been well-received, even by fans of the classic games in the series. In earlier games, weapons had 5-10 attachments that affected their stats: a suppressor reduced the firing range but concealed the player on the minimap, while grips accelerated aiming and movement while aiming down sights. Typically, only a few attachments could be installed, and if a player wanted to add more, they had to sacrifice a perk or secondary weapon. The new system offers more customization options, making gameplay more flexible and varied. Players can now tailor their loadouts to their playstyles, significantly improving the overall experience and allowing everyone to find the optimal setup for success in battle.

Since Black Ops 2, the games in the series have featured the Pick 10 system: the player has 10 slots in their arsenal that they can spend on weapons, perks, attachments, and equipment. This approach has its advantages, but it is not without its drawbacks. Firstly, it divides the gaming community into different groups. Players who do not purchase add-ons face long wait times when connecting to a lobby, since the algorithms cannot combine them with teams that have DLC. Secondly, the price of a full game with add-ons can exceed $100, which is a significant barrier for many players. This necessitates a rethinking of the content distribution strategy to ensure a more accessible and inclusive experience for all users.

As the gaming industry evolved, the publisher's approach to monetization became significantly more aggressive. With the release of Advanced Warfare, the series began actively using loot boxes that could be opened with real money. Initially, these loot boxes contained only cosmetic items and variations of existing weapons. However, in subsequent games, such as Black Ops 3 and Black Ops 4, new, powerful weapons began to appear in loot boxes. This system caused a negative reaction among players, as the best items could only be obtained for money, which undermined the balance of the game and created a barrier for those who did not want to spend real money on virtual items.

All post-release maps are offered absolutely free, and new weapons can be obtained by completing challenges as part of the free Battle Pass. Even if the player did not manage to unlock the content on time, they can do so at any time by completing simple challenges. This innovation makes the game more accessible and appealing to a wider audience, which contributes to player retention and engagement.

Developers of modern Call of Duty games have focused on cosmetic items rather than full-fledged gameplay content. Each game in the series features a store offering a wide selection of character skins, weapon camos, and various finishers. While these elements don't affect gameplay, they negatively impact the overall aesthetic of the game. Initially, paid skins look fairly authentic after release, but over time, exotic skins are added to the store to maintain interest. Players can choose costumes of anime characters, characters from the TV series "The Boys," or even try on a clown outfit. This diversity may attract attention, but it also raises questions about the appropriateness of this approach to game design and development.
