Elden Ring: Nightreign Combat System

FromSoftware games' gameplay is often perceived as extremely complex, but in reality, its basics are quite accessible, as demonstrated by the in-game tutorial in Nightreign. However, there are certain nuances that can create difficulties for novice players. In this text, we will analyze the key points that will help you better understand the mechanics and avoid common mistakes.

Rolling is one of the most effective defensive techniques in the game. When performing a roll, the player gains a temporary window of invulnerability, which allows you to avoid damage from enemy attacks. During this moment, several frames of animation provide protection, allowing attacks to pass through the character without damage. Correct use of rolls can significantly increase the chances of survival and successful overcoming of game challenges.

When With the right approach, a fight with an enemy can become a spectacular dance filled with dodges and counterattacks. To achieve this, it's important to avoid two common mistakes.

  • Backward rolls. This seemingly intuitive tactic often results in you being unable to get close enough to an enemy to attack. It's better to roll forward or to the side: this way, you'll avoid damage and be close to the enemy when the time comes to strike.
  • Panic rolls. This is the name given to chaotic attempts to dodge without regard for enemy timing. Such dodges won't help you: you'll only deplete your stamina bar or be caught in a delayed attack that catches you as you exit the roll. Don't give in to nerves: carefully watch your enemy's movements, wait for them to truly launch an attack, and only then press the roll button.

Rolling isn't the only method of evading enemy attacks in Nightreign. Many attacks can be avoided simply by jumping over them or flanking the enemy. Using this strategy not only helps avoid damage but also opens the door for a special attack, leaving the enemy vulnerable. Effective maneuvering in combat allows players to maximize their abilities and tactical advantages.

Most often, it's best to get behind the enemy. Screenshot: Elden Ring: Nightreign / FromSoftware, Bandai Namco

In Souls games, critical hits are only possible when the enemy is vulnerable. This can happen in several situations: when the enemy takes damage from a blow to the back, when they are on the ground after falling, or during an attack that leaves them open to a counterattack. Using critical hits allows you to significantly increase damage, which can change the course of the battle. To effectively use critical hits, it is important for players to carefully monitor enemies and use opportune moments to strike.

  • Backstab. This vulnerability exists in many humanoid enemies. If you hit them from behind with a melee weapon, your hero will perform a powerful attack that will knock the enemy to the ground.
  • Stun. If you inflict a lot of damage in a short period of time, the enemy will be stunned. Then everything depends on the type of enemy: if it is a human, you need to hit them in the chest or back, but if it is some huge creature, the critical hit point will glow gold.
  • Parry. Another way to stun is to successfully parry an attack: the game then allows you to counterattack. Typically, attacks from human-sized enemies wielding melee weapons can be parried. In any case, we don't recommend this technique for beginners: it's too timing-intensive.

A critical hit in Elden Ring and Elden Ring: Nightreign not only deals significant damage but also provides an important advantage: during the special attack animation, your character becomes invulnerable to enemy attacks. This mechanic can be decisive in battles with multiple enemies, providing protection and increasing your chances of survival. Use critical hits strategically to most effectively deal with groups of enemies and improve your chances of success in difficult battles.

In the original Elden Ring, combat elements play a key role, significantly increasing the damage of your attacks. Proper use of these elements can significantly change the course of battle and increase the effectiveness of your actions.

Elemental damage significantly increases the attacks of enemies vulnerable to certain elements. There are four main types of elemental damage: magic, fire, lightning, and holy. Each of these types has its own characteristics and can significantly impact the outcome of a battle if used correctly against enemies. Effective use of elemental damage allows players to maximize their abilities in battle.

Status effects function more complexly: they do not deal damage instantly, but instead fill an effect bar. The result of a filled bar depends on the specific effect type. For example, effects such as poison and red rot poison the enemy, causing a gradual loss of health. At the same time, the effects of bleeding, frostbite and madness inflict instant and significant damage to the enemy.

Elemental damage and status effects of weapons are indicated by small icons: for example, this Executioner's Blade deals lightning damage and accumulates BleedingScreenshot: Elden Ring: Nightreign / FromSoftware, Bandai Namco

Different enemies have unique vulnerabilities to different damage types, and these vulnerabilities can often be identified visually. For example, trolls are susceptible to bleeding and frostbite, while stone golems are only vulnerable to physical attacks. Fire weapons are most effective against monsters that use frost magic. Understanding these nuances will help you choose the right strategy and weapon to combat each enemy type.

In Nightreign, there are several methods for imbuing your attacks with an element or status. You can use special skills, items, or combos to change the properties of your attacks and make them more effective in combat. This variety of possibilities allows you to adapt your strategy depending on the enemy, significantly increasing your chances of victory. Proper use of elemental attacks and status ailments can greatly enhance your experience and help you succeed in Nightreign. Use these mechanics to maximize your character's potential.

  • Weapons with additional effects. These are typically found in dungeons scattered across the Nightreign map, but some weapon classes inherently inflict status effects. For example, all katanas and daggers cause bleeding in their victims.
  • Spells. Among Nightreign's main characters, the Hermit is the most prolific user of magic, but other characters can also cast spells if they wield a magical staff or seal.
  • Weapon Lubricants. These can be applied to weapons to add temporary elemental damage or a status effect.
  • Relics. Some Relics add elemental damage or status effects to the weapon you start a run with.

Colored gems are a key element of roguelike progression in Nightreign. These gems not only add variety to gameplay but also significantly impact character development and abilities. Each gem color has unique characteristics, allowing players to adapt their strategy and improve their skills. Understanding the role of these gems will help you achieve greater heights in Nightreign and make gameplay more engaging.

You can earn Relics by completing runs: after completing a session, you will be given the opportunity to choose one of several random Relics. Relics are also available for purchase at the Small Pot Market in the main hub using Darkness currency, which you earn during runs.

The color of relics doesn't affect their effects, as the bonuses are generated randomly. Some relics have more powerful stats than others. For example, there's a relic that restores allies' health when they consume a healing potion, while another simply increases the damage of throwing knives. It's important not to ignore relics and to choose them based on your build and vulnerabilities. Choosing the right relics can significantly improve your gameplay.

It's important to note that relic combinations depend on the color of the slots available for each character. Some gem effects are exclusive to certain heroes. For example, one gem increases the power of the Guardian's counterattacks, while other characters cannot benefit from this bonus. This feature influences the strategy of choosing relics and their combinations, allowing you to maximize the potential of each hero in battle.

Slot loadouts can be modified using new relic bowls, which become available in the pot market after defeating the first Night Lord. This allows players to adapt their strategies and upgrade their characters, opening up new gameplay possibilities.

If you are having difficulty mastering the Nightreign combat system, we recommend visiting the arena for duels in the main Hub. In this arena, you have the opportunity to test the abilities of various characters on straw dummies. Also in the tent next to the arena, you can read descriptions of consumables and study a guide that explains the main game mechanics in detail. This will help you better understand the game and improve your skills in combat.

Open world Elden Ring: Nightreign

In the new game from FromSoftware, time becomes your greatest opponent. You have just two days, each lasting 15 minutes, to prepare for the final boss fight. Effective time management and strategic planning will be key to your success in this exciting game.

After just five minutes, a ring of poisonous rain will begin to close around the map, similar to battle royale mechanics. Players outside the safe zone will take constant damage. This adds an element of tension and strategy to the gameplay, forcing players to rush to the center of the map and avoid dangerous areas.

In Nightreign, every second counts, so it's important to plan ahead and choose the best locations to use your time effectively. Limveld locations can be divided into several key types:

  • Places of Grace. Here, characters replenish health and flask supplies, and also boost stats in exchange for runes. They can be seen from afar by the golden pillar rising into the sky. Marked on the map with a golden circle.
  • Temple of Marika. Here you can increase your supply of healing potion flasks. The flask is on the table under the statue of Marika. The icon on the map is a golden bell tower.

  • Forts and cathedrals. These are locations where standard enemies and mini-bosses can be found. These are the best choice if you need to level up your character quickly. They may contain secret passages, like holes in the floor, leading to other bosses. Ruins and Camps. These are two more types of locations where mini-bosses can be found, as well as storage areas for weapons that deal elemental damage or status effects. The status or effect can be identified in advance by the icon next to the location icon. Mines. This is where you should look for forging stones for upgrading weapons. To obtain them, you need to descend to the very bottom of the mine and kill the giant troll. One stone will drop from the defeated monster, and a couple more will be found in chests behind it. Merchant Tents. Ghost merchants are not marked on the map, but they can be found near forts and in camps. These characters sell useful consumables, and there's also an anvil next to them where you can upgrade your weapons in exchange for forging stones.

  • Dungeons. Locations in the form of a stone circle. Here live simple bosses that drop character buffs, new weapons, and additional runes. Another good place to level up, but to activate it, you will need to give a consumable called the "Sword-shaped Key."
  • Sorcerer's Towers. They contain amulets, rare weapons, or seals with spells - however, access to them is blocked by a magical seal. To open the way, you need to break the glowing blue coat of arms. Finding it is difficult: it can be hiding above the entrance, behind an illusory wall, disguised as a tree, or even in a reflection on the water. They are indicated on the map by the icon of a gray tower.
  • Central Castle. The largest and most difficult location on the base map. Powerful enemies like trolls or Crucible Knights live here, and one boss each lives in the basement and on the roof. All enemies drop a lot of runes and good loot, but the enemies here are very dangerous. We advise you not to go here until the second day.

The list of objects in the open world continues, but these Locations are key points of interest in the Limveld. Each of these objects offers unique opportunities for exploration and interaction, captivating players and creating unforgettable experiences.

We recommend starting your adventure by visiting Marica's temples, which are typically located at the edge of the map. This is important, as without additional healing potions, you may struggle to overcome challenges. Also, consider exploring the mines, as forging stones significantly increase your weapon damage, which will be useful later. Using these resources effectively will help you better prepare for more challenging parts of the game.

And you can quickly cross long distances on ghostly eagles. Their stops are located near blue trees with twisted branches. Screenshot: Elden Ring: Nightreign / FromSoftware, Bandai Namco

There is no strict order for the rest, so we recommend focusing on your build and necessary consumables. However, you should avoid battles with strong field bosses, such as dragons and deathbirds, which appear on the map marked with dragon head icons. These battles can last an entire day and result in significant rune losses. It is better to postpone them until later, when you have gained sufficient experience and can effectively deal with such opponents.

Be aware of unpredictable factors that can affect your plans, such as random events and earthquakes. These random elements can significantly alter your plans and expectations, so it is important to be prepared for any unexpected events. Preparing for such situations and developing strategies to overcome them will help you cope with difficulties and maintain control.

Random events often involve monster attacks, such as swarms of giant ants or weakened versions of famous bosses. If you're up for the challenge and looking to earn extra runes, feel free to join the fight. However, if you are not confident in your abilities, it is better to retreat and avoid unnecessary losses.

After defeating Under Tricephalus, the first Night Lord, significant shifts in the earth's surface begin to appear on the map. This opens up new locations, such as a volcanic rift and a forest shrouded in toxic fog. These areas are inhabited by more powerful enemies, and defeating them yields generous rewards. Exploring these locations not only adds an element of adventure, but also significantly increases the chances of obtaining valuable resources and upgrades for your characters.

For example, in the Crater, after defeating the main boss, you will be given the opportunity to upgrade one of the weapons in your inventory to the maximum. Screenshot: Elden Ring: Nightreign game / FromSoftware, Bandai Namco

Connections to the Original Elden Ring

Players familiar with the original Elden Ring and previous FromSoftware games will appreciate the many references and cameos of famous characters. However, understanding the plot of Nightreign doesn't require watching lengthy YouTube walkthroughs. The game offers a captivating narrative that is easy to understand without additional materials.

The connections between the plots of the main game and the spin-off are minimal. The story of Nightreign begins with the Shattering—the civil war that engulfed the Betweenlands after the departure of Queen Marika. However, the plot then goes in a completely different direction. All the key aspects of the world of Limveld will be explained in the introductory cutscenes, allowing players to quickly immerse themselves in the atmosphere and features of the new story.

The story of Nightreign focuses not on the conflicts between the gods, but on the personal dramas of the main characters. For a deeper understanding of these dramas, we recommend exploring the character diaries in the game hub. As you progress through the game, they will be updated with new entries, interactive memories, and quests that will help uncover each character's past and their motivations in the fight against the Night Lords. This adds depth to the story and allows players to better understand the characters' inner experiences.
