Learn morePandemic: Transformation of the gaming industry and the rise of hypercasual games
The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the gaming industry, changing its landscape and accelerating a number of long-awaited trends. With more people staying at home, there has been a sharp increase in interest in video games. Many companies have begun to adapt to the new conditions, offering unique gaming experiences and improving online services.
With restrictions on physical gatherings, multiplayer games and streaming platforms have gained popularity. Players sought new ways to interact and communicate, leading to the growth of virtual communities. Developers have begun to actively integrate elements of social interaction into their projects, making games more appealing.
The pandemic has also spurred technological advancements. Increased investment in cloud technologies and virtual reality has opened up new horizons for gaming content. Developers have begun to actively utilize cross-platform gaming opportunities, making games more accessible to a wider audience.
As a result of the changes caused by the pandemic, gaming companies have become more flexible and focused on player needs. This has created new opportunities for growth and development for the gaming industry, which continues to adapt and evolve in response to the challenges of the times.
The pandemic has had a significant impact on existing trends, accelerating their development. A prime example of this is the online education market, which has expanded exponentially during the lockdown. While the pandemic fueled its rapid growth, it hasn't led to the creation of new online courses. Instead, it has spurred the adoption and expansion of existing formats, opening up new opportunities for learning and professional growth. Hypercasual games, which began to gain momentum in 2017, became a significant market category by 2019 thanks to leading developers like Voodoo. In 2020, as travel restrictions became widespread, interest in mobile gaming soared. People began devoting more time to gaming, replacing commutes and coffee shop visits. This shift in user behavior is not temporary, and the gaming sector is expected to continue growing even after the pandemic ends. The emergence of new technologies and innovative gaming solutions will further fuel the development of hyper-casual games, attracting even more players.
Despite a possible slowdown in the gaming industry's growth rate from 20% to 12%, the sector has not experienced significant declines in recent decades. Forecasts for 2021 indicate continued growth, particularly in the mobile segment, which is attracting an increasing number of users. Innovation and new technologies are driving the development of gaming, making this market attractive for investment and expansion.

Modern trends in the hypercasual games market reflect the rapid development of the industry and changing user preferences. One of the key areas is simplifying the gameplay, which helps attract a wide range of players, including those with no gaming experience. The increasing popularity of mobile platforms is also fueling the growth of hyper-casual games, as they are ideal for short gaming sessions on the go.
An important trend is the use of bright and attractive graphics, which helps distinguish games from similar projects. There is also an active implementation of social features, allowing players to share their achievements and compete with each other. This creates additional motivation for playing and promotes user retention.
Cross-promotion and partnerships between developers are becoming increasingly common. Creating unique collaborations with well-known brands or characters increases interest in games and attracts new audiences.
Furthermore, developers are increasingly experimenting with mechanics and genres, combining elements to create a unique gaming experience. This diversity helps retain players' interest and increases the chances of success in a competitive environment.
Thus, hyper-casual games continue to evolve, adapting to changing trends and audience expectations, opening new horizons for developers and gamers.
The hyper-casual market is constantly evolving, and predicting which genres and mechanics will become popular is becoming increasingly difficult. However, several current trends can be identified. In 2020, ultra-casualization became a prominent trend, where users interact with simple mechanics, such as single-click controls, ensuring minimal difficulty and reducing the likelihood of failure. Attracting players through vibrant graphics and an intuitive interface remains an important aspect, contributing to rapid engagement and retention.
Currently, there is a steady trend towards introducing metagames into hyper-casual projects. This means that developers are integrating elements of leveling and development, which increases the complexity of the gameplay and makes it more appealing to users. The hybrid casual segment, which combines a hyper-casual approach with more complex gameplay, is expected to grow in the future. Despite attempts to create successful games in this area, such as Archero, many companies face difficulties replicating such success. Developing a metagame could be key to attracting and retaining audiences in the highly competitive mobile gaming market.
The hypercasual audience is significantly broader than the traditional gamer group. For example, many older people who play Candy Crush don't identify as gamers and view games purely as a way to pass the time. However, over time, some of this audience may begin to take games more seriously. This could lead to a shift from hypercasual games to deeper casual and midcore titles, opening up new opportunities for developers and expanding the market. Therefore, hypercasual games are becoming an important stepping stone to more complex game genres, driving increased interest and engagement in the gaming industry.
Mobile game developers with the ability to implement complex interfaces and mechanics should adapt their projects to ensure the easiest entry point, similar to hypercasual games. This will attract a wider audience and increase user engagement. Simplifying the initial game experience will be a key factor in successfully launching and retaining players, which is especially important in the highly competitive mobile gaming market.
In the next 3-5 years, hyper-casual games are expected to have a significant impact on the mobile gaming market. At the same time, hardcore games are likely to remain popular primarily on PCs and consoles. Hyper-casual games, thanks to their accessibility and simplicity, will attract a wider audience, which could change the dynamics and structure of mobile gaming. Hardcore games, focused on deeper gameplay and graphics, will remain in their niche, satisfying the needs of experienced players.
How to Train Future Game Development Professionals: Experience and Challenges
During the pandemic, the online education market showed impressive growth. When I was just starting my teaching career, this segment was in its infancy, and financial opportunities were limited. What motivated you to choose teaching in such a challenging environment?
Early in my career, I encountered a shortage of educational resources, specialized articles, and conferences. However, my passion for the field and the growing need for qualified specialists became key factors in my decision. I realized that one of the most effective ways to build a team is through self-directed learning. This not only allows for the development of essential skills but also creates a cohesive team capable of handling any challenges in a professional environment.
I strive to ensure that young people have easier access to the game development industry. They need tools and resources that were unavailable to my generation. It's important to understand that the demands on game development candidates continue to increase, and education is becoming critical to successfully launching a career. Modern curricula must take into account current trends and technologies to prepare specialists capable of meeting the needs of the industry. Developing skills and gaining practical experience through internships and projects will help young professionals confidently enter the world of video games.
There is a belief that many professionals move into teaching after experiencing setbacks in their professional field. This assertion is the subject of much debate and controversy. On the one hand, it is true that some professionals may choose a teaching career after encountering difficulties in their specialty. On the other hand, many professionals enter education out of a desire to share their knowledge and experience and inspire a new generation of professionals. Teaching can be a conscious choice based on a desire to develop and share valuable experience, rather than simply a consequence of failure. It is important to keep in mind that each case is individual, and the motivation for moving into teaching can be varied.
Teaching is not just an art, but also a complex process that requires the development of communication skills. Effective teachers must be able to inspire their students and effectively convey their knowledge. If a specialist is unable to connect two ideas and convey information in an accessible language, their lessons will not be interesting or useful. The ability to establish rapport with an audience and engage them in the learning process plays a key role in the educational process.
Not every experienced professional can become a successful teacher. Effective teaching requires certain skills and methodologies. I believe that teaching should be done not only by specialists who have achieved success in their field, but also by those who are able to convey their knowledge. An important aspect of teaching is the ability to explain complex concepts in simple and accessible terms, which facilitates better assimilation of the material. Thus, a good teacher is not only an expert but also a talented communicator.
The first state program for game development, known as "Game Project Management," represented a significant step in supporting the domestic gaming industry. However, it was met with some mistrust from specialists and companies in this field. The main reasons for this mistrust were the state's insufficient understanding of the specifics of the gaming industry and its needs. Many experts believed that the proposed initiatives did not take into account the real conditions of game development and the challenges faced by developers. Furthermore, there was a lack of transparency in the distribution of budget funds, raising concerns about the program's effectiveness. Gamers and developers expected more practical support, including tax incentives and access to educational resources, but instead received bureaucratic measures that discouraged innovation. Thus, despite the government's intention to support the gaming industry, the program's implementation fell short of expectations, fueling mistrust among professionals.
When we first started, most gaming industry professionals had only practical experience and no formal education. This caused confusion and skepticism among colleagues and experts. However, over the seven years of our operation, we have proven that high-quality education in game development is possible and necessary. We have developed programs that help develop the skills and competencies necessary for a successful career in the gaming industry.
I am proud to note that 75% of my graduates have successfully found employment in the industry. This has a significant impact on the development of game development: the more qualified specialists there are, the higher the quality of games. I have partnered with Skillbox to provide students with more training opportunities and help them find jobs. Equipped with modern skills, our graduates become a valuable asset to the gaming industry, contributing to its growth and innovation. Many people who previously disbelieved in the importance of game development education have now become instructors at organizations like Dev2Dev and Skillbox. This demonstrates the growing recognition of the importance of professional training for a successful career in the video game industry. Studying at such institutions helps students acquire essential skills and deepen their understanding of game development processes, opening up new opportunities for students and professionals.

The online Master's program in game development at Skillbox offers unique features that make it attractive to students. The program combines theoretical knowledge with practical skills, enabling students to create their own games under the guidance of experienced mentors. The course covers key development aspects, such as game design, programming, 3D modeling, and game marketing.
The experience of the Higher School of Economics (HSE) has significantly influenced the development of this program. HSE's academic traditions, based on high educational standards and scientific research, have been integrated into the Skillbox curriculum. This allows students not only to acquire relevant knowledge but also to develop critical thinking and a creative approach to solving problems in game development. Thus, the Skillbox online master's program not only educates but also develops professionals prepared for industry challenges.
The pandemic has significantly accelerated the transition to online education and contributed to its diversification. As a result, we are seeing two main trends: elite in-person education and mass online learning. The program at the Higher School of Economics (HSE) belongs to the first type, requiring a significant investment of time and money. This format offers unique opportunities for deep immersion in the subject matter and interaction with experts, making it attractive to students seeking a quality education.
If you have a limited budget or insufficient time for study, we have a solution. At Skillbox, we have developed a Master's program accessible to a wider range of students. This does not mean a reduction in the quality of education—everything depends on the qualifications of our teachers. We strive to provide a high-quality education that meets modern requirements and student expectations.
The program offers the opportunity to complete an internship at a French university, opening significant prospects for students in the international labor market. This experience allows students to acquire not only theoretical knowledge but also practical skills in demand in various fields. Students will be able to improve their language skills and immerse themselves in French culture, making them more competitive globally. Internships in an international environment foster professional contacts and broaden horizons, which is essential in today's world. Participation in the program also increases chances of employment with international companies, where international experience and foreign language skills are valued.
We're just getting started, but I'm confident that with the support of RANEPA and Skillbox, we can achieve significant success. However, the key to success lies in the students' active efforts. Initiative and a desire to take advantage of all the opportunities offered by education play a decisive role in achieving results.
Skillbox has an active Gamebox community, which provides students with the opportunity to present their projects and build a portfolio. Participation in this community significantly contributes to successful employment, as it allows you to receive feedback from professionals and expand your network of contacts in the gaming industry.
In Russia, there is a growth in master's programs in game development, but bachelor's and specialist's degrees in this specialty are still in their infancy. This is due to a shortage of qualified instructors and teaching materials, as well as the need to adapt educational programs to rapidly changing industry requirements. A deeper integration of theory and practice is needed to ensure students acquire relevant knowledge and skills that meet modern standards. The development of bachelor's and specialist's degrees in game development will be an important step in preparing professionals capable of contributing to the growth and development of the Russian gaming industry. Bachelor's degrees in game development are relatively new, and this process is uneven. It is important to work together at the government level to standardize and develop educational programs in the gaming industry. The creation of an MBA in game development for experienced professionals is essential, which will improve the quality of education and prepare professionals capable of effectively addressing modern challenges in this dynamic field. In countries such as Canada and Finland, higher education in game development has become the standard. Russia has achieved significant success in the mobile segment, but it needs to more actively develop the PC and console gaming markets. Increasing the number of educational programs and courses in game development in Russia will help create a qualified workforce and improve the competitiveness of domestic developers. This, in turn, will contribute to the development of the entire industry and increase interest in games created for the Russian market.
When will Russia have specialists in game science? Would you like to become one of them? Game science is an interdisciplinary field that combines elements of psychology, design, programming, and sociology. As the gaming industry develops and the demand for professionals in this field increases, the issue of developing educational programs that will train qualified specialists is becoming increasingly important. In the coming years, we can expect the emergence of educational institutions offering specialized courses and programs in game science, which will open new horizons for career growth and self-realization in this dynamically developing field.
I planned to defend my PhD dissertation in the economics of game development. However, at the moment, my efforts are focused on other projects. In the near future, it does not seem possible to obtain a degree in game development, although there are certain preconditions for this in the future.

Moscow and Kazan are actively developing game development education, making this a priority for these regions. It is expected that the process will take several years to reach a high level. Importantly, high-quality game development education helps develop professionals capable of creating competitive gaming products. Increasing the number of educational programs and courses in game development will help attract more talented specialists and improve the overall level of the industry in Russia.
The government actively supports indie developers and organizes game development events. Despite investments in the gaming industry, educational programs in this field are in their infancy. This creates unique opportunities for the growth and advancement of talented developers who strive to create innovative games. It is important to continue developing educational initiatives to provide future generations of game designers with the necessary knowledge and skills.
Regardless of the lack of formal diplomas, we continue to develop high-quality games, which is no less important in the industry. Creating engaging and high-quality game content is our main goal, and we believe that talent and experience can compensate for the lack of formal education.
The Importance of Practical Training in Game Development
What are your plans for the future? Are you interested in teaching or game development? These areas can open many opportunities for personal and professional growth. Education provides the opportunity to develop skills and gain new knowledge, which is especially important in the rapidly changing world of technology. Game development, on the other hand, combines creativity and technical skills, allowing you to create engaging and innovative products. Consider how these areas may intersect in your plans and how you can develop your interests and career in the future.
In May 2023, I left Justforward and took over as head of Vengeance Games in August. Our main specialization is developing games for PC and desktop platforms. However, I continue to focus on teaching and promoting game development, which is an important priority for me.
In the near future, I plan to publish a book entitled "I Want to Become a Game Developer," co-authored with Vyacheslav Utochkin. The main goal of this book is to become a catalyst for educational initiatives in game development both in Russia and abroad. I intend to actively participate in conferences and educational projects, which is my main aspiration. This book will be useful not only for aspiring developers but also for those who want to deepen their knowledge of the gaming industry.
Despite all the circumstances, I cannot completely abandon game development. This is due not only to financial aspects but also to the need to maintain my professional skills. A long break from practice could jeopardize my relevance in the dynamically developing game development industry. Maintaining practical experience and constantly updating my knowledge are key factors for a successful career in this field.
There is a significant difference between a business education and an academic approach, especially in the field of game development, where academic programs are insufficient. Game development has its own mathematical foundations and psychological aspects that remain relevant. However, much of this field is subject to rapid change. Therefore, it is important that training is conducted by practitioners, as what we can learn today may become obsolete in a few years. I am constantly developing in this field, holding an MBA and completing professional retraining at the Higher School of Economics (HSE), and regularly gaining new knowledge on platforms such as Skillbox. This allows me to stay up-to-date on the latest trends and technologies in game development, which is crucial for a successful career in this dynamically developing field.
In 1938, philosopher Johan Huizinga published his treatise "Man Playing," in which he emphasized play as a key element of culture and society. He viewed play not only as entertainment but also as an important aspect of human life, influencing the development of social connections and creativity. Play fosters identity formation, helps people adapt to change, and solve complex life problems. In the modern world, play can serve as a learning tool, develop collaboration and critical thinking skills, and also help relieve stress and improve quality of life. Thus, play continues to be a significant factor in shaping cultural and social processes, and its impact on society is becoming increasingly relevant.
I agree with Huizinga. The history of social development and the psychological aspects of play show that the desire to play is inherent not only to humans but also to all higher animals. Games, as an element of nature, serve as an important learning tool. For example, kittens play at being hunters, which helps them prepare for real hunts. This is why gamification is becoming an effective approach in education, turning the learning process into a fun and engaging activity. The use of game elements in the educational process helps increase student motivation and engagement, which in turn improves learning.
Games play a key role in the development of civilization, and their importance continues to grow in the face of automation and increasing free time. We find ourselves in an era when games have the potential to transform our perception of learning and interaction with information. Given modern technology, games are becoming not only a means of entertainment but also tools for improving the effectiveness of learning and skill development. They open up new horizons for interaction, allowing people to learn and develop in a fun and interactive way.
