Reviews, longreads, interviews, biographies, and other texts about games play a key role in the gaming industry. Even the most innovative project with unique mechanics can remain under the radar if no one talks about it. In this context, developers rely on writers, game journalists, and specialized media. High-quality coverage of projects through articles and reviews not only increases their visibility but also shapes audience opinion, which in turn influences the game's success in the market.

How do you create high-quality text about a game? What makes a text truly "good"? How do you effectively convey the meaning to the reader? What should be left in and what should be left out? These questions concern every author. It is important not only to express your thoughts but also to consider the interests of your readers, as well as the structure and presentation of the material. Well-structured text attracts attention, holds interest, and promotes a better understanding of the game, so it's worth paying attention to every aspect of writing.

We interviewed gaming journalists, authors, and editors to find out how to create high-quality texts about games. As expected, opinions were varied, which makes these responses particularly valuable. Each text represents personal experience and unique insights that journalists strive to convey to readers.

Content is an important part of any text, as it helps readers quickly navigate the material. Properly structured content improves the user experience and facilitates better perception of information. When creating content, consider keywords that aid in search engine optimization. This not only helps attract attention to the material but also increases its visibility in search engines. It is important that the content is clear and concise, reflecting the main themes and ideas of the text. Furthermore, the content should be updated as necessary to maintain relevance and current requirements. Thus, the quality of content directly affects the success of your content and its positioning on the Internet.

His professional achievements and deep understanding of the gaming and literary industries make him a valuable media expert. Working on various projects, he strives to create high-quality content that attracts and holds the audience's attention.

Writing about video games should be dynamic and engaging, as this is exactly how readers expect it to be presented. Whether it's a review, a preview, or a nostalgic longread, the end result should not be boring. Lifeless or lulling writing will leave a negative impression on the reader and will quickly be forgotten. Energy and passion are key elements for creating memorable and engaging content.

After a high-quality game review, the reader is inspired to take action—to try the new game, leave a scathing comment, or even express dissatisfaction with the developer. It's no coincidence that negative reviews are so popular: although they may raise ethical questions, they are filled with energy and life. Therefore, in a successful text, it is important for the author to emotionally engage the reader to generate interest and a desire to discuss the game.

When you have something to say, it is crucial to convey your emotions through the text. Your blood boils with passion, your eyes sparkle with inspiration, and your keyboard is ready to work. To effectively express your mood, focus on choosing vivid words and emotional phrases. Use metaphors and imagery to make the text more lively and captivating. Let your feelings inform your writing so that readers can sense your energy and passion. Every word should resonate with your inner state, creating a powerful message that will attract attention and evoke a response.

First of all, abandon the traditional outline. If you have a universal review outline where the development history comes first, then the plot, mechanics, graphics, and sound, forget it. Typical outlines can negatively impact the quality of the text. Your text must be lively and emotional. Games are diverse, and trying to group them into a single template only complicates the process—for you, the editor, and the readers. Focus on what's most important to say about a particular game. What stood out to you—both positive and negative? What surprised or disappointed you? Write down these key points in bullet points, using one to three words for each. This will create a unique outline for the text that's perfect for the game and reflects your personal opinion.

The resulting bullet points can be organized by topic, changing their order. If you're experienced, feel free to write your bullet points in any order you deem logical. The outline should only be used to check for any important points. Missing points can easily be added in the appropriate place; the key is to ensure logical transitions between topics.

The second important aspect related to the "energy value" of game texts is rhythm. Sentences that are monotonous in length and structure can bore the reader. Therefore, it's essential to employ variety—from short phrases like "It was getting dark" to longer ones rich in phrases and punctuation. However, it's important to remember that excessively long sentences will still be broken into shorter ones during editing. It's important not only to have this range in your arsenal but also to actively alternate between short and long phrases. A regular change of rhythm not only maintains interest, but also creates the necessary dynamics of the text, which is especially important in gaming works, where the player's attention must remain focused.

Screenshot: The Witcher 3 / CD Projekt RED / Saber Interactive

The dynamism of a text can be significantly enhanced by the use of humor. However, it's important to exercise caution, as humor perception varies from person to person. If an editor deems a joke inappropriate, it will be removed. Jokes should not be added simply to fill the content, as if they were part of a plan, such as "10 jokes per article." If humor doesn't fit seamlessly into the text and doesn't evoke a natural response, it's best to discard it. After all, a vibrant and engaging text can exist without jokes. Forced attempts at humor will likely be removed during editing, resulting in unpleasant feelings.

To enhance the energy of the text, it is important to use powerful and emotionally charged words such as "heresy," "chthonic," "explosion," "rudeness," "uncontrollable," and many others. At the same time, boring and clichéd expressions should be avoided, a clear example of which is the word "is." Language is a vast palette, and it is inappropriate to limit yourself to only the most banal and inexpressive words. This does not benefit either the author or the reader. Effective writing requires bold vocabulary and a willingness to experiment with language to create a vivid and memorable impression.

Without a doubt, profanity confidently wins the world championship in emotional expressiveness. This should be taken into account. You can create a rough draft of the text, without limiting your expressions. Then, remove all obscene language and replace it with more moderate, yet still expressive, words. It is important not to accidentally send the initial draft for editing.

This technique effectively helps to cope with difficult text passages that cause confusion and paralysis. Using powerful and emotionally charged words, you can overcome any obstacles in the writing process. This method has been tested in practice and has proven itself as a reliable way to improve creative flow.

A former editor of publications such as Igromania and DTF, as well as a narrative designer on the End of Despair project, he has extensive experience in creating engaging content. His professional path includes work in the field of video games, where he develops storylines and immerses himself in the world of narrative, which allows him to create interesting and memorable stories for players.

The era of gaming magazines, when the internet was just developing, was an era of standardized reviews. Basic aspects such as plot, gameplay, graphics, interface, and controls became the main elements of game evaluation. This was necessary, as readers did not have the opportunity to experience games in person, and authors needed to convey key points in an accessible and clear form. This approach helped shape readers' perception of the game, allowing them to visualize the process and features of the gaming experience.

Nowadays, anyone has access to promotional trailers and streams, which makes descriptions of gameplay less relevant. Instead of wasting time on text instructions, readers can watch gameplay for themselves. Even if the video is promotional, many people are unable to distinguish it from the actual gameplay experience. Thus, visual content becomes more valuable and informative than text descriptions, allowing potential players to better understand what to expect from the game.

The primary goal of reviews remains the same: the author must analyze what is appealing and what is frustrating about a game, helping the reader decide whether it is worth investing their time and money. Nowadays, there is no need to describe gameplay in detail; a few gifs or videos are sufficient. It is important to focus on the emotions and impressions the game evokes, as they are crucial for product perception.

A review today is a work based on another work. It is a genre of artistic and journalistic writing that not only satisfies the reader's interest but also brings additional value. The review text can be in artistic form if it corresponds to the author's intention. Every work that has been carefully crafted and creatively crafted deserves a thoughtful and original approach from the reviewer, which underscores its significance and uniqueness.

I often find myself borrowing the language of other authors. After reading works by Fowles or Wilde, even in translation, I begin chatting with flowery expressions and a touch of pathos. Over time, I realized there's a point to this. How better to convey the atmosphere of a literary work than to try to recreate it through style, text structure, and word choice? This requires certain skills, and when you're creating your own work based on another, experience in fiction is essential. Using elements of a foreign language helps not only express ideas but also deeply understand and interpret the source of inspiration.

Ultimately, a review often includes elements of an essay. However, it should be noted that an essay based solely on the author's opinion is not of high quality. An author who doesn't research the material risks losing the trust of readers. A deep understanding of the topic and careful research of sources are more important than any stylistic devices. A quality review requires not only personal judgment but also well-founded analysis, making it more informative and valuable to the audience.

Researching the material is an essential step in the writing process that every author should go through. Don't follow the example of David Cage, who was inspired by cinema to create his own works. Instead, consider Stephen King. Before writing his novel "11/22/63," he met with former CIA agents and meticulously studied all news reports. If you don't take the time to prepare and research your topic, your writing may be of poor quality, which will negatively impact your reputation as an author.

No matter what kind of writer you are, there will always be critics who disapprove of your work. Perhaps one in a thousand readers will express appreciation and praise your efforts. However, editors usually don't receive feedback, especially positive ones. This is the reality of the profession. Readers often express dissatisfaction, and you need to accept this.

Don't panic or worry about rejection: your opinion will still be taken into account, even if someone rejects your work. It will remain in their memory if you approach the text with creativity and originality. Although you may not be remembered, your work will live on and influence.

They are responsible for selecting and editing articles, reviews, and interviews that interest readers. Thanks to their deep knowledge of literature and science fiction film, the editor is able to identify current trends and present them in the magazine. Their work includes not only writing texts but also collaborating with authors and working to improve the quality of materials. "Mir Fantastiki" is becoming an important platform for fans of the genre, thanks to the editor's professionalism and commitment to developing high-quality content.

Non-fiction text about video games functions similarly to other types of non-fiction. Such texts can be roughly classified by genre, which, in turn, may overlap. However, the choice of genre and stylistic devices begins not with a central idea, but with an understanding of the target audience and the goals of the writing.

What Remains of Edith Finch? Или с интеллектуальными задачами в Baba is You?

The second direction revolves around the question, "What did the author want to say?" While this formulation may seem a bit fuzzy, it has become widely known. Games don't exist in isolation, nor do their developers. Each project is always the result of a combination of the creators' perspectives, worldviews, experiences, and ideologies. It's important to understand that behind every game lie not only technical solutions but also the cultural and social contexts that influence its creation and perception.

Disco Elysium would hardly have achieved its unique sound without a deep analysis of the Soviet past and the personal experiences of its creators. The concept of the protagonist—an amnesiac detective searching for his place and ideas in a dying world—vividly illustrates these ideas. Important aspects include not only the storylines but also gameplay mechanics, such as the Thought Cabinet, as well as the impressive art design that brings the world of Revachol to life. All these elements together create a unique atmosphere, allowing players to delve deeper into philosophical reflections on life and society.

Screenshot: Disco Elysium / ZA/UM game

It's important to note that games can be analyzed not only through the lens of a clearly expressed narrative, but also, for example, in the context of strategy games like Civilization and other similar games with "contour maps." It's worth paying attention to how developers use game mechanics to reflect the influence of different religions or methods of achieving victory. The question arises: is military victory in most cases a simpler and more effective strategy? This may indicate a militaristic outlook or a lack of awareness on the part of the authors. Reflecting on the topic "What did the author mean to say?" can lead us to a deeper question: "What did the author actually say, regardless of their intentions?"

When a project passes through many hands and minds, and a large team is responsible for it, it is difficult to talk about a specific intention. However, even in such situations, certain statements, both spontaneous and more purposeful, emerge. In this context, it's important for the author not only to avoid pretense but also to have experience working with other works on similar topics. This allows for a better understanding of how to formulate one's thoughts and ideas, as well as to create a more profound and meaningful text. Knowledge of similar works can help highlight the unique aspects of a project and convey them to an audience.

    Screenshot: Soma/ Frictional Games

Books Video and film can convey ideas and emotions perhaps even more effectively than other formats. However, interactive media can offer a unique way to engage with discourse, allowing the user to actively participate. It's important to consider how different formats can influence the perception and understanding of the ideas being conveyed.

The sci-fi horror game Soma draws attention with its transhumanist theme and impressive environmental design. The gameplay includes gripping sequences, but in my opinion, the mechanics and other aspects don't fully convey the main theme. Nevertheless, stealth elements and interactions with monsters significantly enhance the feeling of loneliness in this world. If you are interested in works that touch on similar themes, I recommend checking out Greg Egan's "Permutation City", which also deeply explores issues of human nature and technology.

Former editor of Igromania and Kanobu, and editor-in-chief of the Gamedev section at Skillbox Media. He specializes in analyzing and covering video game industry news, as well as creating high-quality content for gamers. He has a deep knowledge of gaming technologies and trends, which allows him to stay abreast of the latest developments in the world of game development.

To write high-quality texts, it is important not only to read and practice a lot, but also to deeply understand the principles of writing. Reading allows you to become familiar with different styles and approaches, but this is only the foundation. To achieve mastery and make money from your writing, you need to study your target audience, master SEO techniques, and develop a unique style. Practice should be purposeful, with a focus on improving your editing skills and creating content that will be valuable to readers. Understanding genres, formats, and current copywriting trends will help you create texts that not only attract attention but also effectively accomplish their intended purpose.

Here are five helpful tips for writers, regardless of their experience level. These recommendations are relevant for both beginners and professionals, regardless of the topic—be it society, music, film, or, as in this case, video games. The right approach to writing and structuring content can significantly improve the quality of your work and attract more readers.

The ability to formulate thoughts correctly and write in your native language is a fundamental skill for successful socialization. Most people develop this skill in school and later in life. However, the ability to write error-free emails does not make someone an author. Authorship requires a deeper approach: it is necessary not only to write, but also to carefully craft the text for which a fee is expected. It is important to understand that work on the text includes not only correct language, but also structure, originality, and the ability to convey ideas to the reader. Developing these qualities not only improves professional skills but also promotes personal growth.

Writing is a process that requires repeated editing and self-reflection. It's important to carefully consider the structure, from the introduction to the conclusion. You need to choose precise wording, frequently consult dictionaries and reference materials, use a variety of stylistic devices, check punctuation, and seek out the necessary information to enrich the content. This is the kind of work that many who once decided they could write texts and make a living from it dislike. However, successfully creating high-quality content requires patience, diligence, and attention to detail.

To become a successful author, you need to actively work on your texts. Simply writing, like most people do, is not enough. It's important to refine your skills and approaches. Don't be fooled into thinking that with experience the number of edits will decrease. In fact, the amount of editing work can remain the same or even increase. To confirm this point, we recommend reading the first chapter of William Zinsser's book "On Writing Well," in which he shares helpful examples of the importance of careful writing. Work with mindfulness. This quality is especially important for writers. After writing each paragraph, pause, take a deep breath, look around, and focus. Then read your text carefully, trying to understand every word. This approach will allow you to improve the quality of your content and make it more expressive and understandable for readers. Being mindful about your writing not only improves your writing but also helps you develop your writing skills.

    Still: The Shining

This advice It may seem obvious, but even experienced writers sometimes ignore it. High-quality texts often include phrases like "the game makes you feel" or "the boss's final attack can kill the player in one hit." While these may seem straightforward, it's important to remember that the term "force" implies coercion, which a game certainly cannot do. Furthermore, only the character dies in gameplay, not the player. However, a phrase about player death might be appropriate in the context of a discussion of an innovative vest capable of injuring its wearer.

Using techniques that may be considered taboo should be approached consciously. Even if your Russian teacher is an unquestionable authority and she told you to avoid repetition in your essays, remember that lexical repetition can serve as a useful stylistic device. Use it when necessary to emphasize important points and create rhythm in the text.

Ask questions. What exactly is meant by the word "authentic"? What's the difference between the terms "categorical" and "categorical"? Are colloquial and slang expressions appropriate in a serious text? Will readers understand if I call roguelikes "roguelikes" in a piece aimed at a casual audience? Is the term "roguelike" appropriate for this audience, or will further explanation be required?

Ask questions about every word and phrase, even if the answers seem obvious. Answer these questions. If the answer isn't satisfactory, review the fragment, change the wording, and find more suitable synonyms. This approach will improve the quality of the text and increase its readability. It is important that each element of the content is as precise and clear as possible, which in turn contributes to better perception of the information and its optimization for search engines.

It is important to remember that if there are unclear points in your text, readers will definitely notice them. If they don't find answers to their questions, it can distract them from reading, and they may forget why they started reading the material in the first place, leading to abandoning the article. It's even more frustrating if readers find the information they need on their own, as this means they've completed the material without the author's help. Therefore, it's important to carefully edit your text to minimize ambiguities and make it as clear as possible for your audience.

Avoid such mistakes. Develop your inner critic and editor, and approach your texts with caution. This approach will not only improve the quality of your own work but will also make editing other authors' articles easier in the future. Proper self-criticism and a thoughtful approach to your writing will help you create higher-quality content and achieve better results in your work.

Doubt the information. It's safe to assume that the creators of the Internet viewed their invention as a great blessing for humanity. The ability to quickly find answers to pressing questions is a truly impressive prospect. However, the World Wide Web has only become a boon for those who can effectively work with vast amounts of data: critically evaluate information, verify sources, and distinguish between facts and opinions. For most users, the internet has become a source of confusing information noise, where the first data encountered is often accepted as the truth. It is important to develop critical thinking skills and learn to filter information so as not to get lost in this stream.

Screenshot: Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning / THQ Nordic

Released in 2012, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is a fantasy RPG developed with the help of renowned authors. The project's creators include writer Robert Salvatore, comic book artist Todd McFarlane, known for the Spawn series, and Ken Rolston, lead designer of the cult games The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind and Oblivion. Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was originally planned as an MMORPG, but due to budget constraints, the developers decided to change the concept and release a single-player version. Nevertheless, the final product retains elements typical of large online games like World of Warcraft, including vast empty locations and fetch-and-play side quests. This game attracted players with its unique world and interesting mechanics, making it popular among fans of the genre.

Mentions of the detrimental influence of MMO elements have been found in reviews of Kingdoms of Amalur since 2012. For example, such comments can be found here. Similar opinions appeared in 2021 after the release of the remaster Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning, which is also discussed in a number of sources. It is important to note that the game was not originally conceived as an MMORPG; it was developed as a single-player project. This information can be found on the English Wikipedia page for the game and in Jason Schreier's book "Press Reset." However, as you may notice, I exaggerated a bit in the previous paragraph.

The story about Kingdoms of Amalur's MMO legacy raises questions. It is unclear where this information came from. Kingdoms of Amalur was originally planned as a prequel to an MMO that was being developed concurrently, but the project was canceled due to budget constraints. This misunderstanding may have arisen among Russian-language authors who misinterpreted English-language sources. Similar information has not been found in foreign media.

It's important to understand how to protect yourself from inaccuracies when creating your own content. There is no one-size-fits-all solution to this problem. I recommend constantly questioning everything, including accepted facts. Apply Dr. Greg House's approach, based on the principle that everyone can mislead—both intentionally and unintentionally. This will help you create more accurate and reliable content.

Respect for the reader is a key aspect of writing quality content. The reader is the ultimate judge of your texts, and their opinion is crucial. If your materials don't resonate with your audience, they risk going unnoticed and unused. When creating texts, strive to take into account the interests and needs of your readers so that your works are not only informative but also engaging. Remember that successful content is that which engages and satisfies the needs of the audience.

Losing your audience is as easy as disrespecting them when creating an article or other content. Every term that isn't clearly explained, every fact that isn't thoroughly verified, and every awkward phrase left to the editor's discretion becomes an insult to the reader. Respect for the audience is a key aspect of successful content marketing. Quality content should be clear, informative, and accurately reflect reality. This is the only way to retain reader interest and build a loyal audience.

It's important to understand that your thoughts won't always be obvious to others. Each person perceives information differently, and the same message can be understood differently. To achieve better rapport, communicate with others and monitor their reactions to your words. If they don't understand you, the reason may lie in the way you formulate your thoughts. Learn to express your ideas so they are clear to everyone. Develop empathy and try to put yourself in the shoes of the reader of your article to better convey your point. This will help you create more effective and understandable content that will be interesting and useful to your audience.

Authors should consider many aspects to improve their skills. It is important to expand your knowledge and horizons by exploring new topics and ideas. Don't argue with editors, as their recommendations can significantly improve the text. Instead, it is better to listen to the advice of a proofreader to improve the quality of your work. Experiment with different styles and genres, try new formats to find your unique voice. All of these approaches will help you become a more successful writer and attract readers' attention.

Illustrate your arguments and pay attention to the text layout. For example, if you're describing the main character, include an indented image to help readers better understand their personality and characteristics. The same applies to all descriptive sections. Using image captions can be useful for highlighting interesting facts about the game. This highlights important points and makes the information more accessible without distracting from the main text. Consider the visual appeal and structure of your content to keep your readers engaged and enhance their experience.
Screenshot: Dead Island Definitive Edition / Techland / Deep Silver

Explain even the most obvious things. For example, enemy auto-leveling in Dead Island significantly devalues your character progression. This means that no matter how you develop your skills and abilities, enemies will scale to your level, depriving you of a sense of progress and achievement. This may be obvious to you, but some readers may not grasp the full meaning. Explain such points briefly to maintain focus and avoid going into details that could distract from the main topic.

Try to avoid extremes, obscene language, and loud statements in your comments. Moderation and restraint will help your text stand out from the toxic comments common on many gaming websites. Avoid making aggressive requests to developers in response to technical errors, and avoid claims that any game is a crime against humanity. It's important to express your opinions constructively and respectfully, which will foster a more productive dialogue within the gaming community.

Avoid calling games the absolute best in their genre, as this is a highly subjective opinion. Such emotional assessments are best left to YouTubers. It's important to maintain a neutral tone in your writing. Even clearly unsuccessful games can have positive aspects. For example, the meticulously crafted Red Dead Redemption 2 also has moments that can be irritating.

To strengthen your arguments, use arguments supported by specific examples. Statements such as "the combat system falls flat" or "the writing is excellent" require clarification. Explain why you reached these conclusions and point out specific flaws in the combat system. Otherwise, your writing will fail to stand out among the usual forum comments. Detailed analysis and a reasoned opinion will help draw attention to your point of view and make it more compelling.

When writing, it's important to maintain a balance of length. The optimal length depends on the format. For example, I prefer reviews to be no more than 14,000-15,000 characters long, not including spaces. However, for large collections or extensive analytical articles, there are no such restrictions. Determine the maximum length for your text and try to stick to it. This will help maintain the quality and clarity of your writing.

When creating content, be sure to consider your publication's editorial policy and its target audience. If you're running a personal blog, this aspect can be ignored, but for gaming-related media, following established guidelines is crucial. In some cases, using the letter ё and avoiding brackets may be required, while in others, adding a large number of images may be necessary. Understanding your article's target audience is key to successful writing.

Reading A diverse reading experience significantly improves your writing skills. Don't limit yourself to specialized books like "Write, Cut" by Maxim Ilyakhov and Lyudmila Sarycheva. Include fiction and articles from various publications in your reading list. Pay attention to texts that go beyond video games. Studying materials about literature and film will also enrich your experience and help develop your writing style. The broader your horizons, the better your writing results.

Regularly update your gaming experience and explore new genres. A narrow specialization can be useful, but a diverse knowledge base will definitely set you apart from other writers. As an editor, I note that the video game media is desperately short of strategy experts. We especially need writers with a deep understanding of MMOs and competitive online games. Explore these genres; they might interest you and open new horizons in your career.

Find original ways to express your thoughts. A standard review can be transformed into a semi-essay by adding personal experience. This will be much more engaging than a standard review. Use GIFs instead of screenshots, as they better demonstrate gameplay. Discuss fresh ideas and don't be afraid to experiment. An unconventional approach to writing will leave a more lasting impression. Don't be afraid to share your opinion and don't change it under pressure from others. If you didn't like the new God of War game, don't hesitate to explain your reasons in detail. Think Biomutant is underrated? Share your thoughts—you might not be the only one with this opinion. It's important to express your position as clearly and convincingly as possible. Develop your personal brand by actively engaging with readers through social media and blogs. This helps increase your recognition and demand in the professional community. A prime example is Semyon Kostin, a freelance writer for DTF, who successfully runs his own Twitter page and blog on the DTF platform. He regularly announces new articles and promptly responds to comments, which allows him not only to strengthen his connection with his audience but also to attract significant donations for his content. This approach not only helps develop a personal brand but also creates a loyal community around your work.

Learn from your colleagues and don't be afraid of your mistakes. Making mistakes is normal for everyone, both beginners and experienced writers. You can make grammatical or stylistic errors, as well as factual errors. The main thing is to promptly correct shortcomings and strive for development. Don't be afraid of negative feedback; everyone gets it. Focus on constructive criticism and don't rest on your laurels. Development and learning are the keys to success in any field.

Don't forget the importance of diligence! A hard-working writer has every chance of achieving significant success. It's better to create an article, even if it's far from perfect, than to write nothing at all. Regular practice and a desire to improve will help you develop and improve the quality of your content.

    • Egor Argunov's Telegram channel

A technical editor with experience in game development, previously working in editorial at the DTF platform. I specialize in creating and editing content that meets high standards of quality and relevance. My experience in the gaming industry allows me to effectively work with technical texts, ensuring their clarity and accessibility for the target audience.

Video games are an amazing art form that continues to evolve every year. I admire how developers create unique worlds, reimagine familiar mechanics, and transform simple polygons into living and immersive universes. This process requires tremendous effort and creativity to bring a project to a successful release. Games open up new horizons of experience for me, make me think, and give me vivid emotions. I sincerely value this contribution to the cultural space, because video games are not just entertainment, but a powerful tool for self-expression and education.

For me, writing about game development is a way to share my admiration with others. Through my writing, I also want to express my gratitude and respect to the developers who created this amazing magic with their own hands. In each article, I strive to convey the unique aspects of gameplay, technology, and creativity that make games unforgettable.

For readers to experience this delight, the text must possess certain qualities. First and foremost, the material must be accessible and understandable. This is why game journalism is in many ways similar to popular science articles: in both cases, the goal is to explain complex topics in simple language while still engaging the reader. The key is the ability to captivate the audience by making the information easy to understand.

For effective comprehension, it is important to maintain simplicity and clarity of presentation. Complex structures and confusing wording can hinder understanding and distract the reader. Since the audience's attention and patience are limited, clear and concise sentences are essential. This will help maintain interest in the material and provide a deeper understanding of the topic.

Screenshot: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time / Nintendo EAD

When creating content, it's important to clearly define your target audience. This will help shape their image at the initial writing stage. Understanding the reader's needs and expectations will influence the depth of topic coverage, the use of specialized terminology, and the level of detail of each idea. Without a clear idea of who you're writing for, you risk failing to reach the right audience and achieving effective interaction.

As a gamedev journalist, I regularly encounter the absence of many terms from the Western gaming industry in the Russian language. In such cases, I employ three approaches: keeping the original English name, using transliteration, or trying to adapt the term to make it more understandable to a Russian-speaking audience. These methods allow me to effectively convey information while preserving the meaning of the original, which is especially important in our dynamic and rapidly evolving world of video games.

In this situation, the principle applies: the more professional the audience, the easier it is for them to perceive English terms. For example, when it comes to FTUE (first-time user experience), experienced developers may understand the acronym without further explanation. However, for a general audience, it is important not only to provide the explanation but also to offer a Russian-language equivalent with an explanation and examples. This helps ensure a deeper understanding of the concept and improves comprehension of the material.

Proper text formatting plays an important role in the reader's perception of information. It helps structure thoughts and highlight key points. We recommend using the following techniques to improve the readability of your content.

    • Highlight the most important things. This way, the reader will immediately see your main idea. But don't overdo it: if you use too much highlighting in the text, it will, on the contrary, be more difficult to perceive.
    • Use lists. This is a great way to structure information when you need to list several equivalent thoughts.
    • Add illustrations. This will not only help you convey your message more clearly but also help break up the text, making it less monotonous. You can use screenshots, diagrams, gifs, videos, and so on as illustrations.
    • Divide your text into sections if it's getting too long. Be sure to provide a concise and clear title for each section so the reader knows what to expect.

It's important to consider your audience's opinion. If comments on your text suggest that certain sections are unclear or insufficiently developed, this is a signal that adjustments are needed. Thank readers for their feedback, provide clarification on any aspects that raised questions, and update your text. This will not only improve the material's comprehension but also increase its value for readers.

Author of longreads for such publications as DTF, Player One, Mir Fantastiki and T-Zh. Professional experience in creating insightful and engaging texts that capture readers' attention and develop interest in the topic. An expert in writing analytical and fictional materials that immerse audiences in a world of fantasy and technology. Non-fiction texts about video games are diverse in style and content, and the approaches to their creation are even more multifaceted. In this context, I will share my experience as an author of unique and unusual longreads, as this is the definition with which I was invited to this discussion. My work focuses on exploring various aspects of video games, from their cultural influence to technical features, which allows me to create engaging and informative content for readers. To create high-quality longreads, it is important to follow one universal rule: write about topics that are truly interesting. Try to create materials that, even if you lose track of your name, will attract your attention as you scroll through lists of posts. Avoid writing texts that seem already discussed and trite. Even if you're working on a hype piece for an editorial assignment, use your creativity and research the topic in more depth than usual. This will help you stand out from other publications and attract readers.

The topics you can write about are largely determined by three main factors. First and foremost, there's the terms under which you agree to create the text. If you're publishing on blogs, you must adhere to the general rules of the platform. Within an editorial environment, it's important to consider the style of other authors. In the case of advertising materials, there may be requirements for various aspects, including age ratings for video games that were published in an era when such regulations didn't yet exist. This emphasizes the need for flexibility and adaptation when working with content, as well as the importance of understanding the target audience and the specifics of the platform.

Having strict guidelines in your work can be quite beneficial, as they facilitate the rapid acquisition of new skills. Furthermore, such texts tend to pay more. It's important not to stick to one format and to experiment with new approaches from time to time.

Psychonauts / Double Fine Productions

The text reaches an acceptable state only after several iterations of self-editing. After writing 10,000 characters at night, I allow myself to rest, and then, after sleep, with renewed vigor, I correct the mistakes I made earlier. This process is repeated several times until a sense of completion emerges. Although such work can continue indefinitely, looming deadlines are usually the factor that forces me to stop. Therefore, it is important to take a simpler approach to your publications and not strive for perfection in every word.

Screenshot: game Cruelty Squad / Consumer Softproducts

Creating a longread with the help of an editor significantly simplifies the process of preparing the text for publication. Before presenting the material to a wider audience, the editor will review it, correct any minor errors, and point out any points that may cause confusion among readers. However, sometimes errors may arise during editing, which will lead to the need for additional editing. We recommend saving earlier versions of texts to avoid difficulties in the event that you need to restore the original version. This will ensure clarity and consistency in your content, which is especially important for maintaining reader interest.

Ultimately, your text will be read by regular users. Most people simply skim the material and, at best, give it a like. Comments are often filled with memes, arguments, complaints, and trolling. This is typical audience behavior, and it is important to be prepared for such reactions. To get more attention for your content, focus on creating high-quality, engaging content that sparks discussion and encourages readers to leave meaningful comments.

Don't worry too much about negative comments. However, it is not recommended to completely ignore them, as they can contain useful ideas and suggestions for future materials.

Text writers, game writers, and producers are professionals who play a key role in the entertainment industry. They create engaging stories and deep characters that immerse players in unique worlds. Developing game scripts requires not only a creative approach but also a deep understanding of gameplay mechanics. Producers, in turn, coordinate the team's work, ensuring deadlines and budgets are met. Their task is to create a high-quality product that will attract and retain the audience's attention. It is important that the text and script are adapted to the target audience, which contributes to the successful promotion of the game on the market. A professional approach to content creation in the gaming industry is the key to the success of any project.

I recently published an article about Sam Barlow's methods of working with narrative in games. The text is based on his personal lecture, where he identified three key elements that shape his approach to storytelling: emotion, idea, and metaphor. These components play a vital role in creating deep and memorable game stories, allowing players to not only immerse themselves in the game world but also experience powerful emotional moments. Understanding these aspects can significantly improve narrative perception and strengthen the player's connection with the characters and the plot.

For Sam, emotion represents a state the player must immerse themselves in. Idea is a key element that makes the narrative more unique and thematic. By metaphor, a game designer primarily means game mechanics. It serves as a reflection of situations, human feelings, and real-life phenomena, thereby creating a deep connection between the gameplay and the emotions of players.

In my opinion, working with non-fiction text about video games and other topics has much in common with creating narrative in games themselves. Based on Barlow's concept, any text can be roughly divided into three key elements: cinematic structure, quotations, and emotions. Cinematic structure helps organize the material, ensuring logical consistency and dynamics. Quotes lend authority and depth to a text, allowing it to include expert opinions or important statements. Emotion, in turn, creates a connection with the reader, evoking response and interest. These three components are the foundation for creating engaging and memorable writing about video games.

Text structure is a key component of its perception. It determines how easily the reader will absorb information and follow the author's train of thought. A coherent presentation of material, with an emphasis on interesting details and facts, contributes to a deeper understanding of the topic. To achieve this, it is necessary to create a clear and logical structure that guides the reader through the main ideas and arguments. Properly organized text not only holds attention but also increases its value to the audience.

When I talk about cinematic structure, I do not mean the use of bombastic language or attempts to shock the reader, but rather the general similarity between screenwriting and non-fiction writing, such as a biography of a particular creator or a longread about the history of a particular studio or game series. Cinematography is about the ability to tell a story in a compelling and dynamic way, which is essential for both screenplays and texts that explore the development and context of creativity. Thus, narrative structure becomes an essential element, allowing the reader to better understand and experience the material being presented.

The three-act structure, popular in film, can significantly simplify the writing process of any text. First, it's important to determine where the introduction will be, how the plot will develop, and when the ending will occur. If you're writing a longread, integrating the collected information into this simple structure is easy. In my opinion, this is easier than developing characters and their personalities from scratch. As a result of your research, you will already have ready-made characters, conflicts, and even dialogue that can be used in your text. Using a three-act structure not only simplifies the process but also helps create a more engaging and logical narrative.

Dialogue plays an important role in storytelling, and it's worth paying attention to its use in the form of quotes. Quotes are dialogues and monologues that have already been spoken in real life. Your task is to collect the most memorable and meaningful ones and then effectively integrate them into your chosen narrative structure, such as a three-act structure. However, don't limit yourself to just three acts; the number of acts can vary depending on your needs and preferences. The main thing is to create a harmonious and captivating narrative that will be interesting to readers.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance is one of Daniel Vavra's projects. Screenshot: Kingdom Come: Deliverance game / Warhorse Studios

Whether writing about Daniel Vávra's game design methods, the rise and fall of Glen Schofield, or the challenges of developing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, it's important to let your characters tell the story's key and emotional moments on their own. This adds dynamism and life to your content, making it more cinematic, helping to keep the reader engaged until the very end. This approach not only brings the text to life but also creates a deep connection between the characters and the audience, which in turn increases interest in the topic and facilitates better perception of the information.

Reading an unstructured longread without quotes and facts is much more difficult than material that offers a clear and interesting story. Readers are more often looking for engaging stories and details than the author's personal reflections on graphics and mechanics, which can distract from the main topic. It's important to create content that grabs attention and holds interest by providing information based on facts and examples, not subjective opinions.

Emotion plays a significant role in content creation, especially when it comes to formats like reviews or personal essays. In these cases, your feelings and impressions become central elements of the narrative. While standard structures like "graphics, gameplay, sound, and other aspects" can be used, such approaches often lack depth and originality. It's important that your perception gives the text its uniqueness, and a carefully thought-out structure helps maintain consistency and logic. This will make your content more appealing and memorable to readers, which, in turn, will increase its value and improve search engine optimization.

Games are unique experiences that go beyond simply analyzing numbers and specifications. In a review, it's inappropriate to focus on how many weapons a game, such as a hypothetical Serious Sam 5, has. Instead, consider the design and story. If a game only has ten weapons, it might be because the main character, Sam, has only one arm or limited carrying space. In this case, a limited number of weapons can enrich the narrative and create a deeper connection with the character and their circumstances.

This decision can provide new insights into the series and the protagonist. To what extent is it controversial or, on the contrary, successful? How does gameplay with one-armed Sam change the player's perception? How did you feel when, instead of an all-powerful character, you were offered control of a disabled one? This example may seem unusual, but it clearly illustrates the importance of character choice in gameplay. It is important to understand how such changes in mechanics affect the emotional response and engagement of the player, as well as how this affects the overall perception of the game.

When writing a longread about a studio or a specific person, it is important to consider the emotions of those who become part of the narrative, not your own. The emotions of protagonists, such as developers, producers, and actors, play a key role in creating a compelling narrative. Analyze interviews and select the most vivid and emotional fragments to enrich your text. These quotes should not only complement the main story but also enhance it, making the narrative more gripping. The deeper you delve into the experiences of your characters, the harder it will be for the reader to put your material down. An emotional component in a longread not only attracts attention but also facilitates better information comprehension, creating more vivid and memorable content.

Game developers often begin their projects with enthusiasm, but sometimes difficulties arise along the way. Changing team moods, from inspiration to disappointment and anger, is a natural process that can lead to internal conflicts. The departure of key employees from the studio often exacerbates the situation, creating additional difficulties for the remaining developers. Ultimately, the project can either be successful or canceled. These circumstances form an important part of development history and help us understand how video games are created.

These examples are, of course, exaggerated. However, if we delve deeper into the development process of almost any game, it becomes clear that the situation is much more complex. The fate of beloved game series is influenced not only by greedy publishers, but also by the developers' desire for experimentation and innovation. It is important to consider many factors, including market trends, changes in audience preferences, and technological limitations, which can have a significant impact on the final product.

Screenshot: L.A. Noire / Rockstar Games

For example, the popular game L.A. Noire did not achieve expected sales due to Rockstar's greed. A huge amount of resources was invested in the project, and only GTA 5, after several years of its multiplayer mode, could have recouped these investments. A new intellectual property with unique mechanics had very limited chances of success, especially after prolonged development under less than qualified management.

The conflict between producers and creators in the entertainment industry is often viewed one-sidedly. Stories abound of greedy producers who put profits above creativity, and innocent artists striving to convey their ideas to audiences. However, this conflict has many facets. Producers are often under pressure from financial investments and market expectations, which influence their decisions. On the other hand, creators often face constraints that prevent them from fully realizing their ideas. It's important to understand that both sides have their own interests and motivations, which can lead to conflict, but also to collaboration. By analyzing this conflict from different angles, you can see how the interaction between producers and creators can lead to successful projects if both sides can find common ground and reach a compromise.

Create text that is vibrant, rich, and filled with emotion. Include relevant quotes to enhance the impact and immerse the reader in a conflict that goes deeper than in similar materials. These elements will give your storytelling a cinematic quality, helping to hold the audience's attention and draw them into the story.

It's important to convey an existing story in a way that clearly visualizes what's happening. Avoid introducing new events and spending time on detailed descriptions of the game designer's mood or appearance. Distractions from the main plot line can distort perception and distract attention from the key moments of the story. Focus on the important aspects that will help create a vivid and memorable image of the plot in the reader's imagination.

The Editor-in-Chief of Smirnov School is a key figure responsible for the creation and curation of high-quality content. The Editor-in-Chief's primary responsibilities include developing editorial policy, coordinating the work of the writing team, and ensuring the high quality of materials. They monitor the relevance of topics that interest the audience and adapt content to search engine requirements to increase visibility and attract new readers. At Smirnov School, the Editor-in-Chief also actively collaborates with other departments, facilitating the integration of educational programs and materials, which in turn facilitates the growth and development of the educational process.

At the beginning of my career in SMM, I published student work and feedback on VKontakte. I began one post with a lengthy description of the image, which viewers could see for themselves, and added pseudo-philosophical reflections, filling the text with ellipses.

    • быть полезным для читателя;
    • не отнимать у читателя время и внимание просто так;
    • работать на конкретную цель.

    • определить цель текста (вариант «развлечь читателя» сюда, кстати, тоже входит);
    • сформулировать смыслы, которые будут работать на цель;
    • завернуть смыслы в приятную и опрятную упаковку.
