In terms of the number of mentions in shooters, they can rival only the Kalashnikov assault rifle, which we already wrote about in a previous analysis. One of the most common mistakes is inaccurate reproduction of the weapon's appearance. Models are often simplified or distorted, which reduces the realism of the gameplay.

Another mistake is incorrect ballistics and shooting mechanics. Many games fail to take into account the specifics of the rifle's operation, resulting in unrealistic bullet behavior and a lack of recoil. This can greatly impact the gaming experience, making shooting less immersive.

Furthermore, developers sometimes ignore the historical context and details of the Kalashnikov assault rifle's use. This creates distortions in the storyline and gameplay, which can be frustrating for players who value authenticity.

Therefore, when developing video games, it is important to consider not only the visual but also the functional aspects of the Kalashnikov assault rifle in order to create a deeper and more engaging gaming experience.

History

The creation of the Kalashnikov assault rifle was a significant step forward for the Soviet Union in the development of small arms for infantry. This innovation soon raised concern in the United States, which could not remain aloof from the arms race for long. During the Vietnam War, the use of the M14 rifle called into question the need for a powerful 7.62×51mm cartridge, since it did not provide the ability to deliver accurate burst fire at distances of up to 500 meters. This led to the realization of the need to develop a lighter and more effective cartridge-weapon system. Experience gained in various conflicts of the 20th century inspired the Americans to create their own assault rifle, which became an important stage in the evolution of small arms.

Several companies participated in the prototype competition. Springfield Arms Factory, the favorite, proposed an adapted M14 rifle chambered for the 5.69x55mm cartridge. Winchester presented a larger version of the M1 carbine, and Armalite proposed the AR-15 rifle, designed for the 5.56x45mm cartridge. These weapons reflect current trends in the arms industry and meet the requirements of military and civilian users.

The AR-15 rifle, developed by designers Eugene Stoner and James Sullivan, is an improved version of the earlier AR-10 model, which used 7.62x51mm cartridges. The competition participants presented existing designs, adapting them to military requirements, which significantly improved the weapon's performance and increased its effectiveness in combat. The AR-15 quickly gained popularity due to its light weight, accuracy, and modularity, making it one of the most well-known small arms designs in the world.

The AR-15 rifle stands out from the competition due to its high accuracy in both single and full-auto fire. Its lightweight and easy-to-use design makes it popular among shooters. Furthermore, the rifle is inexpensive to manufacture. The AR-15 design incorporates a number of well-known and proven solutions, although they were not adopted as standard in the military.

After passing Army trials, only the US Air Force showed interest in the rifle, which in 1962 adopted it under the designation M16. At the same time, the first batch of AR-15s was sent for testing to Vietnam, where American command encountered an unexpected problem: the Viet Cong were armed with Kalashnikov assault rifles. This created a need for an effective weapon, which subsequently led to the active use of the M16 in combat.

A year after development of the M16 began, rifles began to enter service with the US Army. Colt's Manufacturing Company was awarded a contract for over 100,000 units, 85,000 of which were experimental XM16E1 models intended for paratroopers and special forces units. These rifles marked a significant step in the evolution of small arms, providing service members with a modern and effective means of combat.

The American M16 rifle gained a reputation for unreliability during the Vietnam War. This was due to problems associated with the early prototypes of the rifle, as well as the low quality of military ammunition. Over time, these shortcomings were corrected, but the M16's reputation for unreliability, fragility, and fragile design persisted for many years.

Foreign companies often confuse weapon classifications. For example, the German HK416 assault rifle is often mistaken for an American one due to its similar design. This creates difficulties not only for specialists but also for gamers, as in some games this rifle may be referred to as the M416 or M27. However, this is not contrary to reality: Heckler & Koch developed the HK416 with the needs of the international market in mind. As a result, various modifications of this rifle are used today, including by the US Marine Corps.

American rifles such as the M16 and M4A1 became iconic weapons in significant conflicts of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Unlike the Kalashnikov assault rifle, they have acquired a reputation for being a "good guy", which is largely due to their popularity in films and video games. These rifles are traditionally used by the US military and are often seen in the hands of British soldiers. They are currently in service in over 30 countries, underscoring their international recognition and effectiveness in combat.

Counter-Strike Confusion

The M16 video game first appeared in the 1990s. In 1998, TNT Team released NAM, a game about the Vietnam War. This project was a logical continuation of the ideas laid down in the Platoon modification for the shooter Duke Nukem 3D. The NAM developers paid significant attention to recreating the weapon, and the appearance of the M16A1 model in the game is executed at a high level, which emphasizes the realism of the gameplay.

The M16 rifle's cult status among gamers was achieved later. Initially, this weapon could be found in the games Half-Life: Opposing Force and Half-Life: Blue Shift, and then in Half-Life: Decay. In these games, a modification of the Colt Carbine Model 727 with an underbarrel M203 grenade launcher is presented. The main difference from the M16A2 model is a shortened barrel, which makes it more maneuverable and convenient for use in confined spaces.

The first problems with transferring the rifle to video games became apparent with the release of Counter-Strike. Similar to the Kalashnikov assault rifle, in the original version of the shooter and in Counter-Strike: Source, the rifle called the Maverick Colt M4A1 was "mirrored". In real life, the ejection port and bolt carrier are located on the right, but in the game this was changed, which does not correspond to reality. Such inconsistencies raise questions among players familiar with real weapons and affect the level of in-game realism.

In the game, the character uses a ramming device rather than a bolt when reloading, which in reality is only used when the recoil spring is insufficient, such as when using a low-power subsonic cartridge. It's worth noting that in reality, the ramming device is a button, but in the game, the character calmly pulls it as if it were a lever. This detail adds an element of unrealism, which can be an interesting aspect for analyzing the game's mechanics and its correspondence to real-life prototypes.

In Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, the developers successfully addressed the left-handed action and replaced the Colt M4A1 rifle with two other variants: the M4A1-S and the M4A4. Despite the name, there are no real-life modifications of the M4 rifle. The M4A1-S is a Colt Carbine Model 723, while the M4A4 is a Mk18 mod 0 carbine. These changes significantly impact gameplay, offering players a variety of tactical options and playstyles.

Colt carbines were developed two decades before the first M4 prototype appeared, which was an attempt to reduce the size of the full-size M16A2 model. As a result, the new version, the M4A1, which replaced its predecessors, is distinguished by its high technology and modularity, thanks to the integration of a Picatinny rail. External features have also changed: a non-removable carrying handle and an improved upper receiver distinguish the M4A1 from previous models.

The Mk18 mod 0 stands out from other models, such as the M4A1, due to its compact size. It is important to note that the M4A1 versions are indeed produced in the United States, but they have a deliberately reduced rate of fire. This is done to prevent overheating during intensive use and to improve weapon control when firing in bursts. The compact size of the Mk18 mod 0 makes it an ideal choice for a variety of tactical situations, which increases its popularity among military and law enforcement agencies.

Many AR-15-based rifles have a similar visual style, making them difficult to distinguish at first glance. An example is the game Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, where the American assault rifle is designated as M4. However, given the possibility of automatic fire, it is actually a modification of the M4A1. Understanding the differences between these models is important for gun enthusiasts and players to correctly interpret their characteristics and functionality.

Inaccuracies in the weapon's characteristics have virtually disappeared thanks to the mass modification of the basic M4 model to the A1 standard and the introduction of the automatic fire function. However, game developers continue to rename weapons, often due to a refusal to acquire licenses to use the original names. This avoids legal complications and reduces costs, but can mislead users about the actual characteristics and names of the weapons.

In Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Lockdown, released in 2005, the rifle was named the SR-4CQB. In 2007, in BlackSite: Area 51, players could encounter the rifle under the name Assault Rifle. Similarly, Rockstar Games introduced the rifle in GTA 4, where it was also given the generic name Assault Rifle. This name was also used in Just Cause 2 and Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City. These examples demonstrate the tendency of developers to use abstract names for firearms in video games, which allows the focus to be on gameplay rather than precise weapon models.

The 2008 game about the famous spy James Bond, 007: Quantum of Solace, introduced players to the TND-16 rifle, the name of which refers to the famous M16. That same year, Saints Row 2 was released, where you can find the M4A1 under the original name AR40 Xtnd. Three years later, in the sequel Saints Row: The Third, the weapon received the designation AR-55 and had the ability to fire in three-round bursts. These examples demonstrate how the developers use known elements of weapons, adapting them for gameplay, which adds realism and interest to the gaming experience.

Payday developers, the Overkill Software team, also did not stay away from creating unique weapons. The first part of the game introduces the AMCAR-4 assault rifle, the prototype of which was the M4A1. In the sequel, this rifle is already called CAR-4. In addition, in Payday 2, players can encounter the original AMCAR, but in the Colt Carbine Model 733 modification.

The popular online shooter Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege features a variety of weapons based on the AR-15 platform. For example, in the Operation Grim Sky season, players received the M4 rifle, which lost its A1 designation during the transfer process. The game also features the C8-SFW, added as part of Operation Black Ice, and Operation Burnt Horizon introduced users to the Commando 9. All of these names correspond to real-life prototypes, such as the M4A1, Colt Model 933, and Colt 9 mm SMG. These elements make the game more realistic and interesting for fans of military themes and shooters.

The creators of Hitman, IO Interactive, demonstrated outstanding ingenuity in the development of their world. In this virtual world of Agent 47, enemies, including Soviet soldiers and elite military personnel, are armed with Fusil G assault rifles, which are available in several modifications. According to the descriptions, the Fusil series rifles are designed and manufactured in France. However, just a glance at their appearance reveals their inspiration—the M4A1 or a very similar rifle based on the AR-15 platform. Thus, the game successfully blends elements of real-world weapons and fictional settings, adding depth and realism to the gameplay.

M16 and M4 in blockbusters

In AAA games for weapons Particular attention and care are paid to models such as the M16 and M4. Unlike the Kalashnikov assault rifles, which are often depicted inaccurately, American weapons in video games are generally reproduced with a high degree of detail and realism. This attention to detail not only increases player immersion but also helps to more accurately convey the characteristics and features of these famous assault rifles.

Games such as Arma, Insurgency, and Squad are serious military shooters where the attention to detail on the part of the developers is unquestionable. Interestingly, DICE once introduced a left-handed AK in Battlefield: Vietnam, highlighting their commitment to diversity. These examples demonstrate the importance of accuracy and realism in modern war games, making them popular among players seeking an authentic combat experience.

One example of inaccuracies in games is Far Cry 2, released in 2008. This game features an AR-16 rifle that ejects spent shells to the left, and its design is a mixture of the M16A1 and AR-18. It is important to note that the AR-16 does not have a full-auto fire mode and fires in three-round bursts, which is typical of some later modifications of the M16. This aspect may cause confusion among gun enthusiasts, as it does not correspond to the real-life characteristics of the models featured.

In reality, there is an Armalite AR-16 rifle, but it differs significantly from the model featured in the game. In the game version, the rifle uses 5.56x45mm cartridges, while the original AR-16, released in 1959, uses 7.62x51mm cartridges. The AR-16 magazine capacity is 20 rounds. The main similarity between the game model and the real rifle lies in the design features common to all AR-15-based platforms. These differences highlight that game interpretations of weapons may not correspond to their historical prototypes.

One of the most memorable shootout scenes is considered to be an episode from the film "Heat," released in 1995. In this scene, one of the main characters fires at police officers with an M4A1 rifle. To create a sense of realism, the actors underwent training with former special forces operatives before filming, which added authenticity and tension to the film. Scenes like these not only captivate viewers but also raise questions about the nature of conflict and the use of weapons in the modern world.

Given the reputation of American assault rifles in popular culture, it would be illogical to expect flaws or serious errors in video games. Developing games based on real-life weapons requires meticulous attention to detail to ensure authenticity and historical accuracy. Players value a high level of realism, making meticulous attention to weapon detail a crucial aspect for developers. Therefore, in modern video games using American assault rifles, one can see a desire for accuracy and respect for the original prototypes.
