In 2021, several significant events and trends occurred in global game development that impacted the industry. One of the key developments was the rapid development of virtual reality and augmented reality technologies, which opened up new horizons for player interaction with game worlds. Also noteworthy was the growing popularity of cloud gaming, allowing users to play on different devices without the need for powerful hardware.
Furthermore, 2021 saw a rapid increase in games with social elements, such as multiplayer projects and cross-platform games, which contributed to the creation of more cohesive gaming communities. The rise of interest in indie games and the support of independent developers have also become a significant trend that continues to enrich the gaming industry with new ideas and approaches.
An equally significant phenomenon has been the attention to inclusivity and diversity in games, which has led to the creation of more diverse characters and stories that reflect different cultures and identities. These trends are not only changing the face of game development but also shaping player expectations, which, in turn, influences the future of the industry.
The most significant event for me was The Game Awards 2021. Although I wasn't particularly interested in the nominees, I couldn't help but be excited for Loop Hero. I expected impressive announcements and was thrilled about the Saber project, which is related to a well-known franchise. The announcement of Space Marine 2 was a real highlight of the year, and I eagerly awaited its release.

The DevGAMM Moscow 2021 conference was a key event for me, as well as the beginning of the development of a new project outside of the Game Gods studio. Participating in offline conferences gave me the opportunity to immerse myself in the industry and exchange experiences with colleagues. The Age of Silence showcase was a great success; we received a wealth of valuable feedback and had a productive time. What game was your biggest disappointment this year?
I waited a long time for New World to release and was one of the first to try the servers on release day. This game promised to take me back to the world of MMO adventures, but my expectations were dashed by hours-long queues and monotonous gameplay. In my personal 2021 ranking, New World confidently takes first place in the "Disappointment of the Year" category. Despite high expectations, the project failed to meet player expectations, leading to disappointment in the community.
There were many amazing games released in 2021, but I will highlight my five favorites. First on the list is "Resident Evil Village", which continues the legendary horror series, offering players a gripping storyline and magnificent graphics. The second game was "It Takes Two," a unique co-op project that attracts attention with its unconventional gameplay and interesting mechanics. Third place belongs to "Metroid Dread," which returns players to the world of classic platformers with unexpected twists. Fourth place goes to "Forza Horizon 5," offering an impressive open world and realistic vehicle physics. Rounding out my top is "Deathloop," a captivating shooter with an original story and time-loop elements. These games not only provided countless hours of enjoyment, but also demonstrated the high quality of production in the gaming industry.
