Before starting their careers in the film industry, Larry and Andy Wachowski were creating comics. They wrote scripts for the Clive Barker's Hellraiser and Clive Barker's Nightbreed series, published by Epic, as well as for Ectokid, based on the ideas of Clive Barker, which was published under the Marvel imprint Razorline. Based on this experience, it is not surprising that even before the release of the first part of The Matrix, the Wachowskis decided to expand the film universe using the familiar comic book format. This decision was a logical step in their creative careers and allowed them to deepen and enrich the Matrix storyline, attracting attention to both the films and the comics.
From 1999 to 2003, more than two dozen webcomics were featured on the franchise's official website. These comics were released in three waves and featured contributions not only from the Wachowski brothers but also from renowned industry figures such as Neil Gaiman, Dave Gibbons, Geoff Darrow, Bill Sienkiewicz, John Van Fleet, Dave Dorman, Dave McCaig, and Ryder Windham. These works have become an important part of the franchise's expanded universe, enriching its plot and visual style.
Most of the comics are original stories that significantly expand the universe. For example, the comic "Scraps of Information," written by the Wachowskis themselves, tells the events leading up to the war with the machines. It depicts the trial of the robot butler B1-66ER, who, seeking to protect his own existence, killed two people. This story was further explored in the anime "Second Rebirth," part of the "Animatrix" anthology. These works not only deepen our understanding of the world created by the Wachowskis, but also highlight the complex moral issues surrounding artificial intelligence and its rights.

Paul Chadwick's "The Miller's Tale" tells the story of a hero who embarks on a perilous journey to the surface to deliver wheat and other grains to Zion. Meanwhile, Neil Gaiman's "Goliath" transports readers to the distant future of the universe, which turns out to be bleak. Even many years after the events of Neo and Trinity, the machines still control the Matrix. Now, not only the systems but also aggressive aliens pose a threat to free people. These works emphasize the importance of fighting for freedom and survival in a world ruled by technology and alien forces.
To counter this new threat, the machines send a human into the real world, training him to pilot and sending him to war with the aliens. The pilot successfully repels the attack, but the machines leave him to die in space, reconnecting him to the Matrix and distorting his perception of time: for every minute left, he experiences several years of his life. This is a dramatic story about the struggle for survival, betrayal and the temptation of power, where every moment becomes a real test.

It is interesting to note, At some point, the comic "The Man Who Knew Too Much" by W. Wilbur W. disappeared from the website without explanation. The comic's plot largely follows the story of Neo: after the protagonist's friend, analyst Harold Hobbs, manages to escape the Matrix, agents begin to track Hobbs, gradually erasing him from reality. The comic raises important questions about control, free will, and the boundaries of reality, making it relevant in the context of modern technology and society.
In 2003, the Wachowskis founded Burlyman Entertainment, where they republished all of their webcomics in print format. The only exceptions were two comics: "The Man Who Knew Too Much" and "Morning Weakness." In 2019, the comics received a new deluxe edition, which included four previously unpublished stories, adding approximately 80 pages of new content. This publication became an important event for fans of the Wachowskis' work, offering not only familiar plots but also new material that expands the universe of their comics.
Anime based on "The Matrix"
After the release of the first part of "The Matrix", the Wachowskis went to Japan as part of a promotional campaign. The influence of anime on their work was significant, and after meeting their idols, the Wachowskis took the chance to collaborate with outstanding masters of Japanese animation such as Mahiro Maeda, known for his work on "The Last Submarine", Shinichiro Watanabe, creator of "Cowboy Bebop", and Yoshiaki Kawajiri, author of "Ninja Scroll". These collaborations marked a significant milestone in their careers, pushing them to expand their horizons in storytelling and visual style. Two months after the release of "Reboot," the animated anthology "The Animatrix" was released. It includes nine short films, each of which deepens or expands the universe created by the Wachowskis. Interestingly, the authors themselves wrote the scripts for half of these stories, giving the project additional depth and connection to the main storyline. "The Animatrix" was an important addition to the franchise, allowing fans to better understand the world of "The Matrix" and its key concepts.

The film "Second Renaissance" is one of the most informative in the anthology created by the Wachowskis. This work reveals the history of the creation of robots, which were created by humans to perform routine and dirty work. Gradually, the machines began to develop self-awareness, and one day, a robot model B1-66ER, trying to save its life, killed two people. This story was previously presented in the webcomic "Scraps of Information." Following a trial, the court sided with humans and ordered the destruction of all remaining model B1-66ER robots. In response, the robots and their supporters began to protest the brutal measures, but the government brutally suppressed the uprising, using force against the dissenting voices. The film raises important questions about morality, self-awareness, and the consequences of human intervention in technology, making it relevant to this day.
The few surviving robots founded their own country, known as "Machine City," or 01, and sought to establish harmonious relations with humans, creating a mutually beneficial coexistence. However, machine technology significantly surpassed human technology, allowing 01 to prosper, while the human economy began to experience serious difficulties. In response, humanity first imposed a complete military blockade on 01 and then declared war on the machines. Ultimately, the machines emerged victorious from this conflict.
The war radically changed the relationship between humans and robots. On the brink of defeat, humanity initiated Operation Darkstorm, releasing a chemical compound into the atmosphere to block sunlight and deprive the enemy of their primary energy source. Despite these efforts, the machines emerged victorious and learned to extract energy—bioelectric, thermal, and kinetic—from human bodies. As a result, the losers retained their lives, but all of humanity was trapped in the Matrix, where they became a source of energy for their creators. This new reality has radically changed the concept of freedom and dependence, becoming the basis for further confrontation between people and robots.



The Animatrix short films tell the stories of characters who escaped the Matrix and found freedom. In one story, "The Story of the Kid," the protagonist establishes contact with Neo and successfully escapes from agents seeking to capture him. The Baby subsequently appears in both Matrix sequels, underscoring his importance in the expanded universe. Meanwhile, in the short film "World Record," the fate of Dan David, a renowned athlete, is different. His memory is erased, leaving him trapped in the Matrix, though some fragments of his memories remain. These themes raise questions about free will and the nature of reality, making them integral to the philosophy of The Matrix.
"The Final Flight of the Osiris" is a short film written by the Wachowskis that serves as a direct prequel to "Revolutions." In it, the crew of the Osiris discovers an army of machines and, risking their lives, delivers a vital warning to Zion, humanity's last refuge, about the impending attack. This story reveals the key events leading up to the main action in "Revolution" and deepens our understanding of the struggle between humans and machines.

The short film "The Initiate," created by director and screenwriter Peter Chon, is conceptually interesting. The plot follows a group of independent individuals who capture Runner-model robots and place them in a virtual reality version of the Matrix. In this virtual space, they attempt to instill human qualities, such as emotions, in the robots. However, in the final scene, the machines destroy all the humans at the base, but some of the transformed robots side with humanity in the fight for survival. This film raises important questions about the essence of humanity and the interaction between people and artificial intelligence, making it relevant and appealing to audiences interested in robotics and its impact on society.
Enter the Matrix complemented the films
One area of the franchise that caught the Wachowskis' attention from the very beginning was video games. Even before the premiere of The Matrix, they, being avid gamers, became interested in the studio Shiny Entertainment and invited its founder David Perry to create a game based on the film's plot. However, Perry, considering The Matrix just another story about hackers, refused. He later acknowledged this decision as one of the biggest mistakes of his career.
The Wachowskis were not about to give up and again turned to Perry after The Matrix gained popularity at the box office. This time, the founder of Shiny Entertainment did not object, nor did the management of Warner Bros., which effectively gave the authors carte blanche to create sequels. The Wachowskis took full advantage of this opportunity.

The video game Enter the Matrix was conceived as a full-fledged addition to the film "Reloaded," which explores aspects of the plot that were left unseen. To achieve this, the Wachowskis wrote 240 pages of dialogue, hired voice actors, and filmed over an hour of additional scenes that seamlessly integrated into the gameplay. They actively monitored the game's development and made adjustments when they felt the development team's decisions weren't aligned with their artistic vision.
Enter the Matrix stars supporting characters from the film "Reloaded"—Niobe and the Illusive Man. Players were able to choose which of them to play as, which slightly altered the gameplay. For example, aboard their ship, the Logos, Niobe manned the helm while the Illusive Man fired cannons at enemies. The game's plot seamlessly complements the film, explaining where Niobe and the Illusive Man were going. They carried out various missions, such as delivering a package sent before the destruction of the Osiris crew, or blowing up a power plant. Thus, Enter the Matrix deepens our understanding of the film's events and expands the world of the Matrix.

The Wachowskis set a number of restrictions for Shiny Entertainment from the outset, among which the key one was adhering to the release date of May 15, 2003, coinciding with the premiere of the film "Reloaded". For film studios, two and a half years is more than enough time to create a big-budget blockbuster. However, for a game studio working on such a large-scale project for the first time, especially considering the need to release on multiple platforms, this time was not enough.
Shiny Entertainment successfully released Enter the Matrix on May 15, 2003, coinciding with the premiere of the film "Reloaded". The game is available on four platforms: PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube and PC. The cover prominently features the names of the screenwriters and directors, the Wachowski brothers. Despite lukewarm reviews from critics, who noted glitches and performance issues, the game was more positively received by regular users. By the end of the year, Enter the Matrix had sold 5 million copies, demonstrating its popularity among players.
The Path of Neo
One of the main complaints from players about Enter the Matrix was the lack of ability to control the Chosen One, as players were offered a choice between two secondary characters. The Wachowskis took this criticism into account and decided to change their approach. Initially, the second game from Shiny Entertainment was supposed to focus on Seraph, another secondary character from the trilogy. However, the creators ultimately decided to give players the ability to control Neo, thereby satisfying the community’s desires and providing a unique gaming experience.
In 2005, The Matrix: Path of Neo was released. The creators, the Wachowskis, again acted as screenwriters and directors, although their influence on the development process was less significant than in the previous project, Enter the Matrix. While Enter the Matrix successfully complemented the storyline of the films, Path of Neo primarily retells the events of the entire trilogy. The game features some events that were not included in the films "Reboot" and "Revolution". Additionally, Path of Neo features a unique difficulty adaptation system: players begin the game facing endless waves of enemies, and as they are defeated, the overall difficulty level increases, ensuring a dynamic and engaging gameplay experience.

The main difference between Path of Neo and Revolutions is the ending. At the end of the third film, Neo sacrifices himself to save the Matrix and Zion. In contrast, in Path of Neo, as the Chosen One prepares to sacrifice himself, pixelated versions of the Wachowskis address him, asserting that Neo doesn't have to die in the game. This emphasizes the uniqueness of the gameplay experience and the possibility of choice, making Path of Neo a remarkable addition to the Matrix universe.
Players will face the final boss – a colossal MegaSmith, created from numerous copies of Agent Smith and the rubble of surrounding buildings. This scene was originally planned for inclusion in the film, but the Wachowskis soon decided to abandon it. MegaSmith presents a powerful challenge that tests players' skills and concludes the storyline, building tension and dynamism in the final battle.

The Matrix Online and the Death of Morpheus
In 2005, the same year that Path of Neo was released, Monolith released the massively multiplayer role-playing game The Matrix Online. This game remained the only part of the franchise that continued the storylines after the ending of The Matrix Revolutions. Until the release of Resurrection, the final film in the series, The Matrix Online offered players a unique opportunity to explore the world of the Matrix, interact with other players, and develop their characters in the context of the expanded Matrix universe.
The game's story was developed with the participation of American comics artist Paul Chadwick, an Eisner Award winner who had previously written scripts for various webcomics. The Wachowskis' plot idea centers on humanity continually finding ways to destroy the world it worked so hard to establish.
Players can choose from three factions: the Zionites, the Merovingian underlings, or the Cypherites—a new human sect that supports the machines and fights to return to the Matrix without memories of life outside it. Each faction offers a choice of three main classes: Coder, Hacker, or Operative. Operatives can specialize in both hand-to-hand combat and firearms, allowing them to effectively eliminate opponents from a distance. However, the greatest damage is inflicted by Hackers, who are able to crack the Matrix's codes and alter the surrounding reality at their own discretion. This unique mechanic makes the game dynamic and engaging, providing players with a variety of strategic options.

The developers sought to harmoniously integrate Gameplay: Key Features of the Game World. Information became the game's primary currency, opening up new horizons for the player. Skills could be improved, and missing ones could be acquired simply by adding new lines of code. Thus, the game consciously provided players with the ability to change their character's stats, including their class, at any time, provided they had the necessary code. This created a unique dynamic of interaction with the game, allowing each player to tailor the experience to their preferences and playstyle.

In most massively multiplayer role-playing games, players are given the opportunity to make important decisions from the start without a full understanding of the game. As a result, after a few hours or days, they realize they made the wrong choice and want to change their character's stats. However, in most MMOs, this is not possible: players can either create a new character or continue playing with an existing one. Our game system offers players the opportunity to reconsider their decisions and make changes without negative consequences. This will allow players to enjoy the game without fear of making the wrong choice and will enhance their overall experience in the world of multiplayer role-playing games.

The developers of The Matrix Online originally intended the game to offer players extensive opportunities for interaction. Participants could become part of a new stage of the conflict between humans and machines or delve deeper into the Matrix and its mythology. The game offered a unique experience, allowing everyone to choose their own path—from participating in epic battles to exploring the deep mysteries of the virtual universe.
The gameplay evolved gradually, and most faction quests formed a coherent story. Story events influenced the game world: if players were tasked with destroying a certain building during an event, it would remain in ruins even after the event's conclusion. Issues of the local newspaper, The Sentinel, could also be found throughout the city, covering events from the perspective of the "blue pills." However, awakened players could read between the lines and learn about the true state of affairs in the Matrix. This mechanic added depth to the gameplay and involved players in the storyline, allowing them to feel the consequences of their actions.

The situation in the world conquered by Neo proved extremely unstable. Despite the peace they had achieved, humans violated the ceasefire and began construction of a second Zion. In response, the machines began producing new models capable of causing even greater damage. Morpheus, obsessed with returning Neo's remains to Zion, angered the other factions by releasing a virus in the Matrix that caused people to awaken in the real world. Ultimately, a special program sent by the Merovingian, dubbed Assassin, reached Morpheus and eliminated him.
Morpheus's murder was a powerful statement and shocked players from the very beginning. The implementation of this event, involving a hired killer composed of files, may have seemed somewhat ill-conceived, but at the time, it was difficult to predict the impact his death would have on gameplay and the narrative. Ben Chamberlain, who took over the game after Chadwick's departure, shared his thoughts on the significance of this turning point.

Under Chamberlain's rule, events took a highly unpredictable turn. New factions emerged in the machine world, notably the militaristic exiles led by the enigmatic General. The shadow war between the machines and Zion escalated into open conflict, which was intervened by a new force—the Oligarchs. These influential individuals retained significant control over the machines and, despite previously allowing them to enslave most of humanity, now seek to reclaim some of their power within the Matrix. As a result, the world finds itself on the brink of chaos, with various factions vying for their own interests, and the outcome of this confrontation could radically alter the future of humanity.
Chamberlain had even bolder ideas. According to his concept, players were supposed to gradually realize that Neo and Trinity are unique programs created by the Oracle to periodically reboot the imperfect Matrix. However, the game designer did not have enough time to implement these ideas.
The Ignominious End of The Matrix Online
The Matrix Online emerged amid the growing popularity of multiplayer online games, but numerous bugs and uninteresting quests kept its online activity low. When Sony Online Entertainment shut down the game's servers in August 2009, fewer than 500 players remained. Despite its interesting concept, the game failed to retain players, leading to its closure.
In 2021, amid the release of the new "Matrix" installment, Eurogamer interviewed Ben Chamberlain, who had been maintaining the MMORPG The Matrix Online for the past two years. Chamberlain shared that the game's development began long before the release of the sequels and took place in conditions of strict secrecy.

By According to Chamberlain, the Wachowskis were indeed involved in the project's development. Although screenwriter Paul Chadwick was given complete creative freedom, he coordinated key plot points, including the death of Morpheus, with the franchise creators. However, the Wachowskis' interest in the game waned over time, giving Chamberlain the opportunity to introduce unexpected and original plot twists. At the same time, he noted that the concept of canonicality did not concern him. Chamberlain is confident that the Monolith staff never considered the plot of The Matrix Online canon, unlike the game Enter the Matrix, which was more recognized in the context of the franchise.
The Matrix Wakes... and Falls Asleep
On December 9, 2021, two weeks before the release of The Matrix: Resurrection, Epic Games unveiled The Matrix Awakens. It wasn't a full-fledged game, but a tech demo created to promote the new film and showcase the capabilities of Unreal Engine 5, which wouldn't be officially released until six months later. The Matrix Awakens immersed players in the unique atmosphere of the Matrix universe and marked a significant step in the development of video game technology.
The Matrix Awakens featured Lana Wachowski, who wrote the demo's script, as well as Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, who returned to their iconic roles. Gameplay includes a series of dialogue and action scenes featuring Neo, after which players find themselves in a stunningly realistic yet empty open world where the primary objective is to explore the environment. The Matrix Awakens is a unique experience that allows players to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the legendary universe.

Some may have hoped that the demo would usher in a new era of Matrix games, but that's precisely where it ended. The Matrix: Resurrection failed to live up to expectations at the box office. However, it's worth considering that, due to the pandemic, it was released simultaneously in theaters and on streaming platforms. The Awakens demo was removed from the PlayStation and Microsoft stores in July 2022, further signaling the project's failure.
The Matrix became one of the most significant and influential franchises of the early 2000s, but its popularity and relevance seem to have stagnated. With the closure of The Matrix Online, the franchise has entered hibernation. Judging by the reaction to Resurrection, perhaps it would have been better to take a break: reimagining a classic won't ruin its legacy, and new projects, as experience shows, are unlikely to reach the heights set by the original films.
There is hope for the franchise's future, as a new Matrix installment is in development. There is no information yet about the plot or whether it will continue the story of Neo and Trinity. Drew Goddard, known for films such as The Martian and The Cabin in the Woods, is responsible for the project, and Lana Wachowski is serving as a producer. Perhaps the franchise will be reborn, just like Neo once was, and we will see many new works, including video games, based on this iconic universe.
