Psychological aspects have a significant impact on the learning process, especially in online education. Methodologists are actively developing approaches to course design aimed at maintaining high levels of student motivation and engagement. One of the key elements of assessing the quality of learning are satisfaction metrics such as NPS (Net Promoter Score) and CSAT (Customer Satisfaction Score), which help analyze the perception of various course components.

Methodologists and instructional designers in the EdTech field strive to optimize the factors influencing course completion and recommendation. However, the importance of student engagement and satisfaction extends beyond continuing education and also affects higher education. The question of how critical these aspects are for the acquisition of new competencies by students studying remotely requires attention. What psychological characteristics indicate a student's readiness for online learning and their likelihood of success? Research into the enduring personal traits that contribute to successful distance learning can provide valuable insights for the development of more effective educational programs.

At the international conference eLearning Stakeholders and Researchers Summit (eSTARS 2021), organized by HSE University and the educational platform Coursera, a panel discussion on "Psychological Aspects of Online Learning" was held. During the event, experts shared research findings that illuminate key issues in this area. We invite you to familiarize yourself with the main points presented by the panelists.

Does Student Satisfaction Affect Their Academic Performance?

Students' subjective experiences during online courses are becoming an increasingly important topic in the context of education quality. The question of how student satisfaction and engagement influence their educational outcomes requires detailed analysis. Yusra Rajabali, a PhD candidate in educational technology and a lecturer at the Mauritius Institute of Education, is researching this issue. Her work aims to identify the relationships between students' emotional states and their learning success, which could help improve online teaching methods and enhance the quality of educational programs.

The study involved 884 first-year students from various faculties. They were offered an online course that included practical assignments of various types. Students built their own websites, created mind maps, wrote reflective blog posts, and made videos. The module also included multiple-choice quizzes. These activities contributed to the development of practical skills and critical thinking in students, which is an important aspect of their educational process.

We invite you to familiarize yourself with additional information:

Mind maps are visual tools that help structure and organize information. They allow you to represent ideas and concepts in diagrammatic form, making it easier to understand and remember the material. Using mind maps in teaching promotes a deeper understanding of topics, improves creative thinking, and helps organize the learning process. Mind maps begin with a central idea, from which related topics and subtopics emanate. This approach facilitates more effective analysis and systematization of knowledge. Mind maps can be used at various stages of learning: for preparing for classes, reviewing material, or completing projects. Using mind maps in the educational process can significantly increase student engagement. This is because the visual representation of information promotes better memorization and facilitates the learning process. Furthermore, mind maps are a versatile tool that can be adapted to various subjects and learning levels. Integrating mind maps into the educational process can be an important step toward developing students' analytical and creative skills, as well as improving their ability to learn independently. Data on student activity and performance were collected using statistical tools on the educational platform. The researcher also obtained qualitative metrics: after completing the course, students completed a feedback survey in which they rated their engagement and satisfaction across various parameters, such as assignment difficulty and tutor support. This allowed us to get a more complete picture of the quality of the educational process and identify areas for improvement.

Rajabali analyzed the data and found a significant relationship between levels of student satisfaction and engagement. The study found that higher student engagement leads to increased satisfaction with the learning process.

Sure, send me the text you want me to revise.

The correlation between student satisfaction and their objective module performance is weak. Rajabali concludes that student satisfaction with the educational process cannot serve as a reliable indicator of their academic achievement. In other words, students can enjoy learning even if their results do not show high success.

The researcher noted that many students expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of tutoring support during the learning process. These comments were confirmed by other experts, which underscores the growing importance of support services in the educational process. Effective tutoring support can significantly improve the quality of learning and enhance student performance, making this topic relevant for further discussion and development.

How to Assess Student Readiness for Online Learning

Natalia Lyz, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences and Head of the Department of Psychology and Life Safety at Southern Federal University, raised the important issue of distance learning. She believes that when organizing online learning, attention should be focused not only on creating convenient platforms and tools, but also on the qualifications of experts and teachers. Although these aspects are important, student readiness for distance learning and their ability to effectively use the opportunities provided are often ignored. The effectiveness of online learning largely depends on how ready students are to adapt to new learning formats and make the most of them.

Natalia and her colleagues set out to study the factors influencing student readiness for online learning. They seek to assess the level of students' preparation for this format of education.

Based on existing models for assessing readiness for online learning, such as the Test of Online Learning Success and the Online Learning Readiness Scale, Natalia identified key components that determine successful participation in distance learning. These components include motivation, technical skills, time management, and the level of student independence. Understanding these factors allows us to more effectively prepare students for online learning and improve the quality of the educational process. Conducting a readiness assessment will help identify weaknesses and develop strategies to address them, which will ultimately lead to improved learning outcomes.

  • attitude towards online learning;
  • independence in learning;
  • time management;
  • communicative competence;
  • technical competence.

The parameters were assessed using a specially designed questionnaire, which was completed by 252 first- and second-year students studying in the field of information technology. This study provides valuable insights into students' perceptions and experiences in the IT field.

The study found that most students confidently assess their technical skills, which is logical given their educational background. The next most important indicator was independence in learning. However, only a small group of students gave high scores for communication skills and interest in online learning. This indicates the need for further development of these aspects in the educational process in order to increase the overall effectiveness of online learning and student engagement.

The questionnaire included Questions about student motivation for online learning were asked, and most respondents cited external factors such as academic competition with classmates, a sense of responsibility to family, and the desire for a high income in the future. The most active participants in online learning were those students who noted a competitive motive. According to Natalia, such motivation contributes to the achievement of high formal results. However, a lack of internal incentive in senior years can lead to a crisis in students' professional development.

A study of the connections between the components of online learning revealed that student independence and time management skills are key factors for success. Natalia noted that this is a natural result, as distance learning requires a high degree of self-organization and self-regulation, as well as the ability to plan the learning process. Effective time management and the ability to work independently are becoming crucial for achieving success in online education.

The researcher emphasizes that modern pedagogy needs to focus on developing soft skills, taking into account the specific characteristics of the generation that grew up in a digital environment. It's important to focus on students' values and needs in order to offer them the most appropriate educational paths. Natalia also emphasizes the need to instill in students responsibility for their own learning and perseverance in achieving their goals. This will help create a more effective educational environment that promotes the development of not only academic knowledge, but also personal qualities of students.

Reading is an important aspect of our lives. It not only develops intelligence, but also enriches the inner world. It's important to devote time to reading books, articles, and other materials to expand your knowledge and improve your comprehension. Regular reading helps improve concentration and critical thinking. It also fosters imagination and emotional intelligence. Thus, reading is an integral part of personal growth and self-improvement.

Modern approaches to education are increasingly focused on the needs and interests of students. Unlike traditional methods, which often rely on the transfer of knowledge from teacher to student, modern practices embrace student participation in the educational process. This includes the use of interactive technologies, group projects, and active learning methods that promote critical thinking and independence.

A key aspect of modern education is individualized learning. Taking into account different learning styles and learning speeds, teachers adapt their methods and materials to ensure that each student can master the knowledge as effectively as possible. This also contributes to the creation of a more comfortable and supportive educational environment.

Furthermore, modern approaches emphasize interdisciplinarity and the practical application of knowledge. Students are engaged in projects that require the integration of knowledge from various fields, making learning more relevant and closer to real-world conditions. This approach not only increases student motivation but also promotes the development of skills necessary for career success.

Thus, modern student-centered educational practices create a more dynamic and adaptive learning system, where the emphasis is on active participation, an individual approach, and the practical significance of the knowledge acquired.

In response to a question from an audience member about the relationship between readiness for online learning and academic performance, the speaker noted that international studies confirm a significant correlation between these two indicators. However, in her opinion, the issue is more complex and requires further study. It is also important to consider how a student's readiness for distance learning correlates with their personal assessment of the experience. This opens up new prospects for research into the influence of self-esteem on success in online education.

What psychological characteristics are associated with success in distance learning?

Continuing the topic discussed in the final section of the previous report, Oksana Istratova, PhD in Psychology and Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology and Life Safety at Southern Federal University, presented the results of a study on the influence of individual student characteristics on the effectiveness of online learning. In her report, Oksana focused on how personal characteristics can determine success in a distance learning format.

The survey prepared by the researchers included a section in which students could independently assess their achievements in online learning according to four key criteria.

  • meeting educational needs;
  • solving educational problems;
  • academic success;
  • assimilation of material.

The sample was classified into three groups depending on the academic performance achieved during the online course. The groups include participants with low, medium, and high levels of success. This division allows for a more accurate analysis of the results and identification of key factors influencing learning.

The researchers conducted an analysis, comparing subjective and objective indicators of learning effectiveness. As a result, they identified two groups of students: one with high success and the other with low success in both criteria. These groups became the basis for further research.

Oksana analyzed students' responses to the question about motivation for online learning and found that Personal and professional fulfillment positively influences academic success. However, as Natalia Lyz previously noted, this motive is less frequently mentioned in student questionnaires than extrinsic motivations, such as the desire for competition. Materialism—the desire to secure a high income in the future—is also a significant factor in success. A significant, albeit less pronounced, connection is also observed between success and the motivation for achievement and competition. Thus, a variety of motivational factors influence online learning outcomes, and understanding these factors can help improve educational processes.

Adult motivation to learn is an important aspect of personal and professional development. Adults often face various obstacles that can reduce their desire to learn. To support their desire to learn, several key factors must be considered.

First, it is important to create a comfortable learning atmosphere. Adult learners must feel confident to openly express their thoughts and ask questions. This can be achieved by establishing a trusting relationship between the teacher and students, as well as by creating a group dynamic that promotes the exchange of experiences.

Second, it is necessary to consider the needs and interests of adult learners. Learning must be relevant and applicable to their lives and work. Programs and courses focused on real-world problems can significantly increase motivation. It is also important to offer flexible learning formats, such as online courses or evening classes, to adapt to adults' schedules.

Third, the opportunity to apply the acquired knowledge in practice. Adult learners are motivated when they can see the results of their learning. Practical assignments, projects, and internships will help consolidate theoretical knowledge and increase their confidence.

Furthermore, it is worth encouraging independent learning. Adults should be able to choose topics and areas that interest them. This can be done through the creation of libraries of resources available for independent study, as well as through support from mentors.

Finally, it is important to celebrate students' achievements. Positive feedback and recognition of their efforts can significantly increase motivation for further learning. Creating a system of rewards for success, whether certificates or career opportunities, also promotes motivation.

Thus, motivating adults to learn requires a comprehensive approach that includes creating a comfortable atmosphere, taking their needs into account, providing opportunities for practical application of knowledge, and supporting independent learning. These strategies will help adults not only improve their skills but also expand their horizons of personal development.

The researchers focused on characteristics that directly influence the ability to learn independently. The indicators included in the study cover planning, modeling, and programming learning activities, as well as performance evaluation, flexibility, and independence. Qualities that contribute to inefficient use of time, known as time disorganizers, were also identified. These include value-semantic, organizational, and motivational aspects, as well as emotional apathy and tension. These characteristics play a key role in shaping a successful approach to learning and increasing educational effectiveness.

The study showed that the characteristics of successful students in online learning manifest themselves differently in groups with high and low effectiveness. Successful learners have developed goal-setting skills, which allows them to effectively plan their actions. They are able to think through sequential steps to achieve their goals, as well as analyze both internal and external conditions that influence the learning process. In addition, they regularly evaluate their results, which contributes to the continuous improvement of their learning activities. These aspects play a key role in the effectiveness of online learning and can serve as a basis for developing methods to improve academic success.

Students with low academic effectiveness often lack clear educational goals and motivation to achieve results. They are also prone to procrastination, which negatively impacts their learning process and success. Setting specific goals and developing motivation can significantly improve their academic performance.

Interestingly, the level of independence in both groups of students was approximately the same, at an average level. Oksana attributes this to their young age, as most respondents had just completed school. Furthermore, all study participants demonstrated high levels of emotional stress. According to the researcher, this may be due to the fact that distance learning is new to them. Many students even noted that online learning acts as a demotivator for them.

The speaker noted that one of the most promising areas is the development of support and guidance for students in online learning. It is also important to focus on developing internal self-regulatory resources that will help students more effectively cope with the difficulties that arise during distance learning. Supporting students and developing their independence will be key factors for successful adaptation to the online format.

Are personal qualities really important in online learning?

Until now, experts have discussed various psychological aspects and skills related to distance learning. However, the question arises: is it possible to create a complete psychological profile of a person who will be most effective in an online learning environment? Developing such a profile will help identify the key qualities and competencies necessary for successful mastery of educational material in a virtual environment, as well as increase student motivation and engagement.

Marina Klimenskikh, PhD in Pedagogics and senior researcher at the Ural Federal University, and her colleagues set out to investigate the relationship between academic success in online courses and the cognitive, emotional, and volitional characteristics of students. This study aims to understand how various aspects of personality influence learning outcomes in distance education, which is particularly relevant in the modern educational context.

This study used questionnaires and psychodiagnostic tools. The project lasted four years and involved more than 2,000 participants.

The work was organized in several stages. Specifically, at one stage, the researchers analyzed the psychological characteristics of different groups of students studying the same course under the same instructors, but in different formats—in-person and online. According to Marina, in the group of in-person students, it was not possible to identify specific qualities that would distinguish excellent students from the rest. Meanwhile, students studying online demonstrated higher levels of responsibility and general intelligence compared to their less successful classmates. This study highlights the importance of learning format and its impact on student motivation and success.

An analysis of the relationship between motivation and academic success, conducted on a sample of 300 online students, yielded unexpected results. A positive correlation was found between amotivation and learning effectiveness: many students without obvious motivation demonstrate high results. This fact challenges traditional ideas about the role of motivation in learning and opens up new avenues for research. It is important to understand how relevant established views on motivation are for the new generation of students and how this may impact teaching methods. Different types of motivation have demonstrated a significant relationship with the effectiveness of distance learning. Research confirms that students' motivation levels directly impact their success in online learning. It is important to consider that intrinsic and extrinsic motivation may have different impacts on learning outcomes. At the same time, creating a favorable educational environment and using a variety of motivation methods can significantly improve the effectiveness of distance learning.

Evaluating the effectiveness of an online course is a key step in understanding its impact on students and achieving educational goals. To do this, several factors must be taken into account. First and foremost, the level of material assimilation should be analyzed. This can be done through tests, surveys, and practical assignments, which will help determine how well students have mastered the main topics of the course.

Feedback from participants is an important aspect of evaluation. Collecting feedback and suggestions will help identify the strengths and weaknesses of the course, as well as understand which elements require improvement. It is also worth considering the level of student engagement: attendance, participation in discussions, and assignment completion can serve as indicators of interest in the material.

Achievement of goals is an equally important criterion. Comparing student results before and after completing the course will help evaluate its true effectiveness. It is also important to consider the long-term impact of the course on participants' career development and their future education.

For a more accurate assessment, metrics such as course completion rate and student satisfaction can be used. This data will help not only in evaluating the current course but also in developing new programs and improving existing ones. Properly assessing the effectiveness of an online course can improve the quality of education and student satisfaction.

Researchers developed a predictor matrix that includes six key factors influencing the effectiveness of online learning. These indicators will help to better understand what aspects need to be taken into account to improve the quality of distance education.

  • F1 — intrinsic motivation: cognitive, achievement motivation, self-development;
  • F2 — level of intelligence;
  • F3 — extrinsic motivation: focus on public opinion, sense of duty, guilt for poor results;
  • F4 — personal qualities: tendency to cooperate and agree with other people, conscientiousness, and also, with a negative impact, emotional sensitivity, anxiety and insecurity;
  • F5 — academic experience: more experienced students who have previously completed at least two online courses, as a rule, show higher academic performance;
  • F6 — openness to experience, that is, curiosity, passion.

Marina notes that although the numerical measurements of the factors are not very clear, and the results of the study seem obvious, they can still These findings may prove useful when developing online courses. For example, this study highlights the importance of motivation and organization of the learning process, as well as the importance of student support and guidance during distance learning. These findings can help educators create more effective educational programs and improve the quality of online learning.

The speaker emphasizes the importance of further research in pedagogy and psychology. She believes that new characteristics and psychodiagnostic tools can be considered for in-depth analysis, but prefers to leave the student's personality out of the focus. According to Marina, many effective educational technologies and methodologies developed in these fields already exist and are successfully used to teach various categories of students. These approaches enable high results and adapt to the needs of each student, which is a key aspect of modern education.

Many educational methods may not adapt entirely correctly to the online environment. However, this is primarily due to the digital literacy of teachers and technical aspects, rather than the pedagogical technology itself. Developing digital skills is essential to effectively implement modern educational approaches remotely.

The researcher suggests focusing on pedagogical design and the context in which online learning takes place. She believes this approach will achieve high results for the majority of students, not just the most motivated and independent ones. Effective pedagogical design adapted to the online format can create optimal learning conditions, which in turn contributes to increased engagement and academic performance for all students.
