"Picking Up the Pieces": How Walking Your Dog Becomes Art

The artistic practice called "walking" considers the process of movement as a way to explore both the external world and the inner self. By carefully observing the surrounding reality, artists are able to discover unusual aspects in ordinary things and reconsider their connections with the natural landscape. Tatyana Mishchenko's photo project is the result of such walks. She takes photos on her smartphone and subsequently combines the resulting images into digital collages. Each of these collages represents a separate "route."

Tatiana is an artist who works at the intersection of several disciplines. Her arsenal includes photography, digital collages, drawings, and ceramics. In her artistic practice, she relies on "a deep perception of external objects, in which their inner content is gradually revealed." She has taken part in group exhibitions in countries such as Russia, Belarus, the USA and Italy, as well as in a number of others. Tatyana is also the winner of awards in both Russian and international photo competitions.

With the appearance of a dog in my life, I became acquainted with the concept of walking art, which radically changed my perception of the world around me.

At first, my outings with the dog were They were unconscious and a product of necessity, but over time they evolved into a practice of deep presence in the urban spaces and surrounding forests. It was no longer just a matter of movement, but a way of becoming aware of the world around us, where the dog's paws and my legs serve as tools for exploring the terrain.

I began to perceive the landscape not just as a static background, but as a dynamic, multi-layered text created by time, nature, and human activity. Consciously choosing my path, I studied the landscape around me, focusing on those elements that had special meaning to me.

The way to study the world around me was not its conquest, but a careful immersion in it. This involves letting go of preconceptions, being willing to accept unclouded impressions, and being open to new meanings and emotions that arise at the intersection of my inner self and external reality.

Each of these walks took on the character of an exploratory expedition of both the inner and outer worlds. Moving through space became not only a metaphor, but also a means of exploring my inner boundaries. The external landscape became a kind of map of my emotions and states.

The dog, being a silent companion, whose perception of reality is not burdened by words, became my guide to the world of awareness. Her neutral presence created an atmosphere of calm in which my inner self resonated with particular clarity. This facilitated the uncovering of the "as yet unconscious"—those layers of emotion and experience that lay silently waiting beneath the surface of everyday life.

The collage technique is not just a random combination of elements, but a natural way of understanding my experience. By gluing together different fragments of photographs, I create a new narrative. My story is conveyed not through text, but through visual images.

The initial perception of the environment is imprinted in our consciousness, turning into an element of the internal archive of experiences. Then, as the collage is being formed, a process of secondary understanding occurs: I analyze the resulting emotions and symbols to reassemble them into a coherent whole. These are no longer just fleeting impressions, but clearly defined meanings. New narratives emerging from the collage enrich the walking art practice itself, directing attention to new aspects in future walks.

Thus, walking the dog is gradually transformed from a simple physical necessity into a complex existential and artistic practice. This becomes a constant interaction between the body, consciousness, the animal, and the surrounding reality. Every step becomes a ritual of coexistence with space.
