Exhibition "Fashion and Style in Photography: Biennale 2025"

Period: June 11 to September 7.
Where: MAMM, Moscow
The classical biennale, organized by the Moscow Multimedia Art Museum, will run throughout the summer.
Among the presented expositions, the exhibition dedicated to the "king of the paparazzi" stands out - Italian photographer Rino Barillari. Throughout his long career, he captured numerous celebrities, including Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Brigitte Bardot, and Sophia Loren.
The "Heroes of Our Time" exhibition features the work of Valery Plotnikov, who captured iconic Russian figures of the past in his photographs. His lens has captured such prominent figures as Joseph Brodsky, Andrei Tarkovsky, Mstislav Rostropovich, and many others.
The current Biennale features a variety of exhibitions featuring contemporary Russian artists. Thus, fashion photographer Danil Golovkin presents a project called "Fashion as a Performance," Damir Zhukenov created a work dedicated to outstanding dancers of the past, and Dmitry Bulin offers his interpretation of Russian fairy tales.
"Street of Sleep"

Period: April 24 – November 16.
Where: GES-2, Moscow
GES-2 is hosting a large-scale solo exhibition by Olga Chernysheva, which is a fascinating journey between reality and the world of dreams – or, perhaps, dreams.
This exhibition presents works by the artist, covering different periods of her career. However, they are united not so much by a thematic connection or seriality, as by a common emotional perception. Formally, the exhibition is divided into several sections, but they are harmoniously intertwined, creating a holistic artistic world. The space in which the exhibition is held is also conceived in such a way that viewers can move freely, without following a specific route from one work to another, and at the same time they are provided with a minimum of explanations. Artworks are not only displayed on walls, but also "float" in the air and are positioned on horizontal surfaces, creating an immersive effect.
Olga Chernysheva is a Russian artist who uses a variety of artistic techniques, including video, photography, installations, and drawing. She actively participates in the Venice Biennale and presents her works at numerous exhibitions both in Russia and abroad.
"The Evolution of Photography: From Daguerreotype to Artificial Intelligence Technologies"

Period: July 15 to October 5.
Venue: Central Exhibition Hall "Manege", St. Petersburg.
An exhibition dedicated to the two-hundred-year development of the art of photography.
The exhibition is organized so that visitors can navigate through works that illustrate crucial moments in the history of photography. This captivating journey begins with the first daguerreotypes, which appeared in the late 1830s. Viewers will then explore pictorialism, the Soviet avant-garde, socialist realism, and Russian nonconformists. Finally, we arrive in the 2020s, when photography created using artificial intelligence technology dominates.
The exhibition features 600 works by 178 artists. Participants include such masters as Louis Daguerre, El Lissitzky, Alexander Rodchenko and Vlad Mamyshev-Monroe.

"Tones of Ecotone"

When: Until July 19th
Where: FOAM, Amsterdam
An ecotone is an area located at the intersection of two ecosystems, such as a seashore. Artists Finn Mayatitta and Jerrold Saija transform this liminal space into an exhibition space. Both are originally from the Netherlands and have roots in the Maluku Islands, which are part of Indonesia. Using photography, assemblage, and modern media technologies, these artists create a "physical presence" of their homelands in the heart of Amsterdam.
The exhibition harmoniously intertwines visual images and sound effects: the pulsating hearts of the artists, the rhythmic beats of traditional drums, and the sound of sago palm being ground into flour. This event symbolizes the metaphorical return of the Moluccan diaspora to its roots.
"The Evolution of American Photography: 1839 to 1910"

When: Until July 21st
Location: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
The history of American photography spans from its inception in the late 1830s to the early 20th century. Over the course of these decades, photography has undergone a significant transformation, transforming from a pioneering experiment into an important means of visual expression and documentation of reality. From its early steps, when the first methods of capturing images were developed, to the early 1900s, when photography became more accessible and diverse, the art and technique of this discipline have evolved significantly. This period also saw the emergence of significant individuals and movements that played a key role in shaping the American photographic landscape.
Works by renowned masters who blazed new trails in the art form sit alongside works by lesser-known, and sometimes overlooked, photographers whose images captured life in small towns across the United States.
The exhibition charts the evolution of photographic processes, including daguerreotype, stereography, and cyanotype, exploring how people's perceptions of this new technology changed.
The curators explain that the exhibition explores the profound transformations in the nation's self-perception provoked by the rapid development of photography as a significant cultural, commercial, artistic, and psychological phenomenon.
"The Garden of Confusion"

Period: June 6 to September 10.
Where: FOAM, Amsterdam
Vietnamese artist Hien Hoang's solo exhibition takes its name from a project she developed in collaboration with scientists that explores the relationship between humans and nature. At the center of this project is a poetic question: what will trees remember about us after we're gone?
Using specialized devices, the artist records how plants respond to various external stimuli, including movement and sound vibrations. She transforms the collected data into three-dimensional sculptures. This installation allows viewers to experience the vibrations of trees in real time.
Another interesting material process involves interacting with mycelium. Hoang creates sculptures by combining metal and mycelium, then coating them with copper sulfate, which destroys the organic components.
Hoang emphasizes the duality of technology, noting that it can serve as both a means of understanding the world around us and a factor that leads us to distance ourselves from it.
Other projects by this artist were also included in the exhibition. Among them are "Scent from Heaven," which is dedicated to the agarwood, and "Across the Ocean," a work exploring the theme of food in light of cultural stereotypes.
"Nothing New"

Period: May 24th to September 16th.
Venue: C/O Berlin, Berlin.
A thirty-year period dedicated to the work of Julian Rosefeldt within the framework of the same exhibition.
Julian Rosefeldt is a contemporary German artist specializing in audiovisual installations. In his work, he combines still images, text elements, and video sequences, thereby creating new levels of meaning.
The main focus of the artist's work is the study of the processes of formation of visual images. Rosefeldt analyzes traditional film and television genres, from westerns to news programs, and identifies their key semantic elements.
The exhibition at C/O Berlin not only showcases Rosefeldt's diverse work across his career but also offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into his creative process. Visitors will be able to see previously unpublished sketches, photographs, and various materials documenting the stages of the creation of his works.
"The Evolution of Documentary Film"

Period: May 24th – September 16th.
Venue: C/O Berlin, Berlin
The work of the fourteen winners of the C/O Berlin Talent Award from previous years reveals a variety of methods and approaches to documentary photography.
The works are not organized by time of creation, but are grouped into four thematic categories.
The first section focuses on classic directions in documentary photography, such as reportage, landscape photography, and portraits. The second section is devoted to questions of staging, narrative strategies, and diverse aesthetic approaches in this field. The third section includes dynamic images and installations. Finally, the fourth section reflects on the future of documentary photography: to what extent can it convey reality in the age of smartphones, artificial intelligence, and fake news?
The exhibition, organized in honor of the 25th anniversary of the Berlin gallery, is a retrospective.
"Preparing for the Unpredictable: The Paradox of Our Experience"

Period: from June 13 to September 22.
Venue: Centre Pompidou, Paris.
Six thousand square meters of space, formerly occupied by the public library at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, became the site of a large-scale installation by Wolfgang Tillmans. This artist, who occupies a prominent place in contemporary art, primarily works with photography.
Although the exhibition is divided into distinct sections, it lacks a clear narrative. The artworks are arranged along the walls and horizontally, filling the entire space. The photographs are paired with animation, music by the same author is played, and texts are read, voiced by Tillmans.
The retrospective exhibition presented hundreds of photographs created by the master over more than 35 years of his artistic career.
«Corbien, Anton»

Period: June 13th – October 12th.
Venue: Fotografiska, Stockholm.
The Fotografiska gallery in Stockholm is celebrating the 70th birthday of the famous "rock photographer" Anton Corbijn, as well as half a century of his professional career.
Dutch-born Corbijn gained international recognition for his portraits of celebrities from the music and film industries, as well as music videos. His large-scale exhibition in the Swedish capital presents a collection of his best works from the 1970s to the present day, a total of around 200 photographs. Among the iconic musicians captured in the photographs are representatives of such groups as the Rolling Stones, Nirvana, Coldplay, as well as U2, with whom Corbien has collaborated for over thirty years.
After the exhibition in Stockholm, it will continue its journey to Berlin and Tallinn.
Casa Susanna

On view from July 21, 2025 to January 25, 2026.
Location: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
This photographic chronicle of the cross-dressing community that existed in New York in the 1960s reveals the world of men who wore women's clothing. These images were created by the community members themselves, who documented their looks. An archive with these old photographs was found in 2004 at a flea market in Manhattan.
The exhibition delves into the dual nature of the lives of men who, although married and having stable careers, hid their true passions. The photographs presented in it also reflect ideas about the “ideal” female images of that era - such as “neighbor girls” or respectable housewives.
