«The Fifth Quarter»: What is this work about?
Bioengineering is currently one of the most promising areas of science. Fields such as biomimicry, bionics, biomimetics, and neuroimplantation are advancing at an incredible rate, and many people are unable to keep up with these changes. However, we cannot ignore progress: we are forced to adapt to new conditions and accept the rules of this game. Bioengineering opens up new horizons, offering innovative solutions for various industries, including medicine, ecology, and technology.
Progress significantly transforms the structure of society and interactions between people. In this work, we explore how humanity will develop if we abandon the achievements of evolution and change our nature. We consider the impact of technology, social change, and moral norms on the future of society.
The questions addressed in our photo project play a key role in shaping its concept and content. We strive to better understand which themes and ideas are most relevant to our audience. It is important to consider how visual images can convey emotion and meaning, as well as how photographs can inspire and spark interest. We explore which techniques and styles of photography are best suited to convey our ideas, and how to choose the right locations and models to create memorable shots. Every question we ask helps us improve the quality of our photo project and make it more meaningful to viewers.
- Do we have the right to create semi-living creatures and use them for our own purposes? And who is using whom now: us them or they us?
- How will enhanced people treat those who did not agree to genome editing? Perhaps the same way we treat animals now?
- What will happen to art? How will people begin to understand art?
- If life expectancy is extended indefinitely, what prospects do the younger generation have? After all, old people will certainly not vacate jobs, apartments, or cities.
- What kind of world will it be - after Homo sapiens?
This story emphasizes the importance of humanizing society, showing that without it, technological progress can turn us into monsters. Technological advances, while bringing many benefits, can also contribute to the loss of humanity if we fail to remember moral and ethical values. It is important to recognize that science and technology should serve the good of society, not become a cause of its degradation. Without attention to humanistic aspects, progress can become a threat to human nature.
Where it all began
In 2003, humanity celebrated a significant achievement—the decoding of the human genome. This discovery was a key moment in biology and medicine, as it allowed for a deeper understanding of the genetic basis of our species. This breakthrough opened up new opportunities for treating serious diseases, as well as the prospect of prolonging life and achieving new levels of health. The decoding of the genome opened the door to genetic research that could lead to the development of innovative therapies and preventative measures.
While some focused on finding salvation, others were preoccupied with questions of their power and influence.
The entrepreneur and owner of the Amphibia company decided to overcome the limitations of Darwinian evolution and improve upon human nature. His ambitious ideas were ahead of their time, while others focused on transplanting pig organs and heart valves. He dreamed of creating new creatures that could complement and improve the functions of the human body. As part of his project, the businessman initiated the development of innovative biological solutions that can not only improve health but also expand human capabilities.
The slogan of the advertising campaign for the implant is as follows:
A little more than human. This term implies the possibility of going beyond ordinary human perception and capabilities. It can refer both to the development of technology and to a deeper understanding of human nature. In today's world, where the boundaries between man and machine are blurring, it is important to realize that "a little more" can mean both evolution and transformation. This expression also implies the desire for self-improvement, the search for new horizons and the unlimited possibilities that open up before humanity.
Stories of project participants
Moscow, ages 28 and 31.

Anastasia is a name that has a rich history and many meanings. Across cultures and countries, it is associated with various qualities and character traits. Anastasia represents hope, rebirth, and femininity. This name became popular due to its roots in ancient Greek, where "anastasis" translates as "rebellion" or "rebirth".
Anastasia is not only a name, but also a symbol of strength and resilience. Many famous personalities have borne this name, which only enhances its appeal. In literature and art, Anastasia is often portrayed as a heroine capable of overcoming any difficulties.
The name Anastasia is also found in various religious texts and traditions, which adds spiritual depth to it. Parents who choose this name for their daughters often hope that their child will grow up to be strong and independent individuals.
In today's world, Anastasia remains a popular choice, combining tradition and modernity. This name is ideal for those who value both historical significance and uniqueness.
I decided to get an implant because it became popular among my friends. I began to feel inadequate, as if I was missing something. I also had memory problems. Getting an implant became a way for me to resolve these internal experiences and improve my quality of life.
I decided to get an implant, and now it has become an integral part of my body, like an arm or a leg. I no longer pay attention to it. My memory has improved significantly, and new qualities have appeared that were not characteristic of me before. My parents notice that I have changed since the implantation, but, as we know, the older generation often perceives everything new with distrust.
There are various rumors about implants, including claims that they are made from parts of dead animals and even that the company "Amphibia" neglects ethical standards by using animal corpses in the production of its products. However, I do not share these opinions and strive to become part of the "Amphibia" team. I will have an interview soon, and I am confident that implants are the future of technology. I want to contribute to this innovative field.
Moscow, 122 years of history. Founded in 1147, this city has witnessed many events that have shaped its unique culture and architecture. Over the course of its existence, Moscow has become the center of political, economic, and cultural life in Russia. Today, it combines historical heritage and modern achievements, attracting tourists and residents with its diversity. Every corner of Moscow preserves its own history, and its streets and squares continue to tell the story of its rich past. 122 years - This is not just a number, it is a symbol of the resilience and dynamic development of the capital of Russia.

Alina's implant is able to track changes in cells, effectively eliminate infections and prevent genetic mutations. It activates cell division beyond its natural potential, allowing for significant life extension, potentially reaching infinity.
I had the implant installed when I was first diagnosed with cancer. The tumor was removed, but doctors warned that the disease could return. Searching for a solution, I came across a company called Amphibia, which had developed an implant for monitoring tumor growth. I was assured it was safe, and I paid for its installation. The implant was initially light-colored, but over time it has darkened. Sometimes it moves and convulses, making it feel as if it's suffering in my stead. Although the implant performs its functions, I still feel the aging process and cannot leave this world.
Age 33, lives in Moscow.

The implant, designed to improve the functionality of the spinal cord, significantly expands the possibilities of interaction with the environment. It can integrate with other devices in the home, providing comfort and convenience for the user. Moreover, the implant can exchange data with similar devices in other people, which allows us to read their emotional state and create deeper connections between users. This level of interaction opens new horizons in the field of neurotechnology and improves quality of life.
Artem was the first person to agree to the installation. The service was provided free of charge.
I found an ad online about the company "Amphibia" looking for volunteers to participate in scientific research. I was promised a reward for participating, and I decided to agree, since I had financial obligations.
24 years old, Moscow. Life in the capital of Russia opens up many opportunities for personal and professional growth. Young people at this age are actively seeking ways to self-actualize, build a career, and develop social connections. Moscow, as a cultural and business hub, offers a variety of events, courses, and workshops that help develop skills and broaden horizons. It is important to use this period to gain experience and create a strong foundation for the future.

I always dreamed of children, but I was very afraid of pregnancy and childbirth. This fear verged on panic, especially due to concerns that my child might be born with health problems in a modern city with its environmental problems. When the gynecologist suggested a device for monitoring and continuous fetal health, I happily agreed. Initially, the implant caused me concern, as it resembled a giant squid. However, after just a few weeks, I got used to it and am now confident that both my child and I are safe. Using modern medical technology helps me feel calmer and more confident during the pregnancy.
The pregnancy was not easy. Doctors told me that without the implant, I would not be able to carry the child to term. Labor is approaching, and I am afraid, but I am confident that the implant will provide the necessary support. After the birth of my baby, I plan to keep the implant—I have become very attached to it.
At 35, St. Petersburg is a place where history meets modernity. Founded by Peter the Great, St. Petersburg is famous for its architecture, cultural traditions, and unique atmosphere. The city attracts tourists with its historical monuments, such as the Hermitage and St. Isaac's Cathedral, as well as picturesque canals and bridges. At 35, life is just beginning, and the opportunity to explore such a rich cultural context becomes especially relevant. St. Petersburg offers a multitude of events, exhibitions, and festivals, ensuring there's something for everyone. In this city, you can not only enjoy art but also develop your interests by attending lectures, master classes, and theaters. 35 years in St. Petersburg is a time for new discoveries and self-realization.

The implant effectively regulates the functions of internal organs and sensory organs, which leads to increased strength and endurance. At the same time, the feeling of fatigue is significantly reduced, which allows for an improvement in the quality of life and an increase in physical activity.
Purchasing new implants gave me the ability to fully immerse myself in games. I played with other owners of similar devices, specifically designed for this purpose. The connection was established through my implant, which my parents gave me at birth. I spent days and nights playing games, experiencing a variety of emotions - from victories to defeats. However, my implant soon failed, and I had to buy a new one on the used market.
At first, everything went well, but soon I noticed that I was losing control. It began to independently determine which games to play, when I need to sleep and eat. It often wakes me at night, causing my heart to beat so hard as if I were running a hundred-meter sprint. The situation is getting worse every day. It is already making all the decisions for me. Doctors warned that my organs will not function without it, and I cannot afford a new one from the factory. It's become a real addiction, and now I'm looking for ways to regain control of my life.
In the warm water, it gradually calms down, opening the opportunity to communicate with you.
Moscow is celebrating the 110th anniversary of its founding. This anniversary is a significant milestone in the history of the city, which over more than a century has become one of the world's leading metropolises. During this time, Moscow has undergone significant changes, from architectural transformations to cultural development. The city continues to attract tourists and residents with its historical monuments, modern buildings, and diverse cultural events. As we celebrate this anniversary, it's important to remember the rich heritage and unique atmosphere that make Moscow a truly outstanding place to live and travel. Every year the city becomes more and more modern, while preserving its history and traditions.

The Anzhi implant analyzes the body, detecting the presence of cancer cells, as well as bacterial, viral and prion infections. It is capable of detecting failures in the process of tissue development and regeneration, which makes Anzhi practically immortal. Thanks to its unique technology, the implant ensures early detection of diseases and helps maintain high levels of health.
I have always paid attention to my health and taken good care of my body. I regularly visited the dentist for dental treatment and kept up with vaccinations. I avoided situations that could compromise my safety.
At "Amphibia", I was offered to test an implant that would independently monitor my health and prevent possible failures. At the time of implant installation, I was over forty, and I noticed that my body was weakening. I hoped that this implant would help me regain a feeling of health, youth, and invulnerability. Technologies in the field of medicine are developing rapidly, and such an implant could be an important step towards improving the quality of life.
At first, I did not attach any importance to it. Over time, I became more cautious, realizing that if I didn't die of old age or cancer, I could become a victim of an accident or crime. This realization made me rethink my habits and behavior in society.
I decided to hire bodyguards. At first, I got two, then added two more. Now they are the first to check all my food and stand at the door when I sleep. I strictly follow traffic rules and never cross the street on a red light. When moving around the city, I use only taxis, always sitting behind the driver. I prefer a live driver, as I find them more reliable than automated systems. Lately, I have been trying to leave the house less often, as this has become a serious danger for me.
At the age of 29, life in Moscow is full of opportunities and prospects. This is a time when young people are actively building their careers, developing personal interests, and establishing social connections. Moscow, as the capital of Russia, offers a variety of cultural events, educational institutions, and career opportunities. It is important to use this age for self-realization, learning new skills and actively participating in the life of the city. A successful work-life balance in a large metropolis like Moscow opens doors to future achievements and professional growth.

I suffered from insomnia for a long time, lying in bed for hours and staring at the ceiling. At times like these, it feels like the world is behind an opaque barrier: nothing is perceptible, and nothing can affect you. All that remains is irritation.
I took pills for a long time, but eventually decided to get implants. This process required carefully choosing the color and shape of the implant I would be living with. The salesperson recommended a pink shade that matched my lip color. I really liked how I looked in the mirror with the new implant.
At first, everything went great—I fell asleep in just ten minutes. However, one day, an incident occurred: I attended a late-night concert. By midnight, I felt extremely tired and sleepy. I tried to perk up with coffee, but unfortunately, I vomited. I don't remember how I got home, but I woke up in my own bed the next morning, with no memory of the evening. This experience made me think about the impact of nighttime activities on sleep quality and the need to take care of my health.
I wanted to get rid of insomnia, but now my life is subject to a strict schedule. This "creature" performs its only function every day: it affects my receptors, inducing sleep, regardless of my desires. It has no consciousness, and I cannot negotiate with it. My internal rhythm is disrupted, and I realize that the fight against insomnia requires a comprehensive approach. To achieve quality sleep, it is important to consider not only my physical but also my mental state, as well as to create comfortable conditions for rest.
At the moment, I am faced with an important decision: turn off the creature's influence and return to pills, or periodically block its effects with other medications.
Age unknown, Moscow.

Man is considered the measure of all things, and this belief covers many areas of life. In philosophy, sociology, and psychology, awareness of human nature and its impact on the world around us plays a key role. It is important to understand that the perception and evaluation of things are formed through the prism of human experience and knowledge. This statement emphasizes the importance of individual perspective and subjectivity in interpreting reality. Human consciousness not only comprehends but also creates meaning, making it central to various aspects of existence. Thus, studying man as the measure of all things opens new horizons for understanding society and culture.
In literature classes at school, we studied the work "The Story of a Real Man". The concepts of "a real man" and "man with a capital M" are familiar to us from childhood. We perceive the word "humanity" as something kind and positive. It is important to understand that these terms have a deep meaning, reflecting high moral qualities such as compassion, honesty, and perseverance. These qualities shape the image of a person who is able to overcome difficulties and help others, which makes him a true example of humanity.
Humanity is one of the most unusual and dangerous creatures on the planet. We not only adapt the world around us to our needs, but sometimes we stop at nothing. I have come to the conclusion that I am capable of correcting the shortcomings of our nature. If, as a result of this change, we lose our status as Homo sapiens sapiens, it will be an inevitable consequence of our desire for improvement. Yekaterinburg is a city that combines history and modernity. Over the past 35 years, this region has undergone significant changes that are shaping its unique atmosphere. Over the past five years, Yekaterinburg has become the center of various cultural and economic initiatives, attracting the attention of residents and tourists. The city is actively developing its infrastructure, improving the quality of life and creating new business opportunities. Yekaterinburg is not only an important industrial hub but also a center for cultural events and educational institutions. Every year, festivals, exhibitions, and concerts are held here, contributing to the development of cultural life.

This decision was a necessary measure for both me and my son. I passed on a hereditary disease to Dima and felt guilty about it. After years of seeking help from various doctors, I finally received help from a representative of the company "Amphibia."
He offered an innovative treatment, and the company covered all the expenses. In exchange, Dima and I signed a contract to participate in the company's advertising campaigns and a non-disclosure agreement. I can't discuss this with you, but I decided to contact you because I noticed that my son has stopped growing: he's turning eighteen soon, but he looks like a child. However, his mind is already mature. I don't know what to do or who to tell about this situation.
29 years old, Moscow. At this age, many people are actively pursuing their careers, developing personal relationships, and occupying important positions in society. Moscow, as the capital of Russia, offers many opportunities for self-realization and professional growth. Leading companies, cultural events, and educational institutions are concentrated here, making the city attractive to young people. At 29, you can already have experience in your chosen field, as well as a desire for new achievements and self-development.

I was born after the "living revolution" and was able to save up for my first implant only by the age of 18. My family was traditional and worked in historical parks, recreating the atmosphere of the past. The implants and my personal problems didn't bother them, and they couldn't understand what happened next.
I learned what it was like to be considered a third-class citizen. Until the third grade, I attended a regular school with both successful and problematic children. However, in middle school, I was transferred to a class with a simplified curriculum. This decision changed my experience and perception of the educational process. I faced new challenges that made me think about differences in educational opportunities and social mobility.
The situation worsened. As an "unreliable person," I couldn't even afford breakfast in the school cafeteria. Later, the term changed to "unreliable creature." Yesterday, I noticed that students without implants receive an "NS" mark. Currently, the lack of an implant has become an obstacle to obtaining a loan, renting a house, and even renting a bike. Opportunities are limited. Life is becoming unbearable.
